Hard to beat for $70

Klipsch RB-10 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair)
Klipsch RB-10 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair)

Pros: - Excellent sound clarity and you can hear the articulations in the music (initial strike of the mallets/sticks on percussion, breaths of wind players and singers, setting of the bow on the strings) - solid bass considering the size - compact size and simplistic design - Solid and heavy

Cons: A little deep to sit on a desk but I am willing to sacrifice the desk space for good sound quality.

Overall Review: I picked these up to used on my desk for music paired with an older Parasound Zamp amplifier I got at the local electronics recycler. The Zamp is 30W and my reading shows that it works best with speakers that have a higher sensitivity rating - the RB-10 seemed like a logical companion. I hooked the RB-10s to the Zamp, fired up the music on my Mac Mini, and was greeted with a pleasant surprise - full sound with a fair balance of frequencies across the sound spectrum. A bit of adjustment of the iTunes EQ (classic V shape with bass amplified/mids reduced/minimal increase on the highs) and the sound is even better. I reviewed my normal streaming options and the sound is just as clear. I know that sound will improve over time so I will patiently break them in and wait for the results. FWIW - I listen to primarily classical and jazz music, podcasts, and a bit of NPR - these are a great fit for my musical tastes. Edit - I had a chance to explore other styles of music today. These speakers sound good on alternative and classic rock but really shine on bass and classical.

CORSAIR CSM Series CS450M 450 W ATX12V v2.4 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Semi-Modular Active PFC Power Supply
CORSAIR CSM Series CS450M 450 W ATX12V v2.4 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Semi-Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Looks nice, appears quality construction, semi-modular construction, cables easy to work with. Fan very quiet and power cord included. Third party reviews are positive.

Cons: Did not work out of the box, potential hassle of rebate. The SATA/PATA/video power cables felt very light weight even when compared to the PS that came in the machine.

Overall Review: First off, I have been building computers since the mid 90's and have never had a problem with a power supply. Bought this to install in a Dell Core2Quad machine running Win10 test box I use in the garage. I figured for $25 the swap to a new (Gold cert) power supply would be quick and easy. I messed around with the power supply for over an hour only to find out it was bad out of the box. I even swapped in another know good PS and the Dell worked fine. Swapped in the original PS, requested a refund, and boxed it up this morning. I know that there is always the potential of stuff not working with Dell machines but swapping the other supply tells me this one is bad.

Solid Case for M-ITX builds

COOLER MASTER Elite 110 RC-110-KKN2 Midnight Black Steel / Plastic Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Pros: Purchased for a no-frills MITX build and it does the job. Lots of space for drives if you want to set this up as a file server. Front fan is pretty quiet and the case feels solid but not heavy. Front faceplate is easy to remove. Cable management is doable if that is your thing but I cannot find a way to easily make they pretty (which does not concern me). Working with this case was easy compared to the other MITX cases I have used.

Cons: Removable power supply mount/extension sticks out of the back of the case over 1" and that bothered me. Case was a bit larger than I expected but that is my fault for not paying attention to the case dimensions.

Overall Review: I picked this up with a rebate to a cheap MITX build. Overall I am happy with the case but the one quirk I missed was the power supply mount/extension that sticks out on the back of the case. After almost returning it because of that, I decided rethink how the power supply might be mounted in the case. After considering making my own mount brackets then looking at the mount, I discovered that it could be mounted on the inside of the case with screws going through it into the body of the case. The (repurposed HP) power supply mounts up and leaves about 1.5" of space between the back of the PS and the large case fan. After a bit of intentional wire routing I got everything to work without a problem. If you take this approach, keep this in mind - The bracket mounts backwards and the screw holes are in opposite places so only two line up with the holes in the power supply. I simply pinched the mount bracket between the two other screws that attach the supply to the case and it mounts solid and secure. If I get my rebate, then the case is a great option for the $25 + shipping I have in it.

Solid M-ITX FM2/FM2+board with built-in wireless that works with Ubuntu

GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XN-WIFI FM2+ / FM2 AMD A88X (Bolton D4) USB 3.0 HDMI Mini ITX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Repurposed a10-5700 processor and 8GB stick of RAM work great to build a cheap Linux machine. Impressive graphics without any setup and an easy to use bios. Picked up my wireless network without a problem. Overall a big win (or should I say a mini win) in my book. I have had excellent experience with both new and used Gigabyte boards and continue to be pleased with their products.

Cons: Space is tight and only two memory slots but that is expected with n M-ITX form factor Price was a bit higher than I expected for an older board but sometimes that is the reality when dealing with older tech.

Overall Review: My extensive reading on MATX and MITX boards kept leading me back to this as one of the best FM2/FM2+ options available and I can see why. I sourced the A10-5700, 8Gb of DDR3 RAM, and power supply from a HP computer that had a bad motherboard. The other bonus of this board is that the onboard wireless works "out of the box" with Ubuntu Linux. I booted to Ubuntu MATE 16.10 on a USB drive and it immediately found the wireless devices and detected my wireless network without a problem.

Money well spent

Linksys 8-Port Business Desktop Gigabit Switch (LGS108)
Linksys 8-Port Business Desktop Gigabit Switch (LGS108)

Pros: Small size, well constructed, and solid. Does not take up much space and LEDs on the face are easy to see.

Cons: Light weight and with cable tension it can move around on the shelf.

Overall Review: I got this on sale last week thru Newegg for $25 and I used it to replace an older 5 port unit. Plugged in power cord, connected network cables, and it was done in less than 5 minutes. Wish I had picked up another for that price.

Great product and great seller!

Pros: Installed these under kitchen cabinets to add some indirect light to the work surfaces. The install was a breeze and the light is excellent.

Cons: Bad connection on one of three strips purchased.

Overall Review: I contacted the seller who promptly shipped a replacement to me. Very happy with the purchase and the service provided. Thank you!!!
