Great bang for the buck

AMD Athlon II X4 640 - Athlon II X4 Propus Quad-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX640WFGMBOX
AMD Athlon II X4 640 - Athlon II X4 Propus Quad-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX640WFGMBOX

Pros: Cheap, fast, 4 cores

Cons: No L3 cache

Overall Review: What a great bang for the buck. I upgraded from a Core 2 Duo E4300 OC'd to 2.5ghz, to this: Athlon II X4 640 OC'd to 3.6Ghz. Very stable @ ~1.45V on stock heatsink and fan. Can probably go higher but why? It's the video card holding me back now! 3DMark Vantage CPU score went from 4040 (Core 2 @ 2.5Ghz) to 11269 (X4 640 @ 3.6Ghz). Paired the new CPU with an ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 motherboard with Sata 6gigs and USB 3.0 support. Added one 4gig stick of Mushkin DDR3 1333Mhz memory. Great upgrade, and not that expensive either.

Great card for the money

Palit GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Graphics Card NE5TX460FHD79
Palit GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Graphics Card NE5TX460FHD79

Pros: GTX 460 performance, DX 11, Physx, etc, etc!

Cons: Only 768 megs memory

Overall Review: WOW. Old card: Radeon HD 3850, Civ5 settings on Medium @ 1280x1024, 2xAA, and it was a little choppy, especially as the maps got bigger. And keep in mind, it was fine with Civ4, no problems, plus all my other (older games). With THIS card, everything is on MAX settings in Civ5, 8xAA, and it’s smooth as butter moving around the screen! Also speeds up the gameplay as the animations are quicker! I can’t believe what a difference it made. And for $120 less than a GTX 470 or 6870! And that’s at STOCK 675mhz speeds! It came with an overclocking util you can use on the fly, and no “testing” needed to change the speed back and forth. I put it at 800mhz and it made Civ 5 even faster, not that it was needed. I did notice the fan came on more and was louder, though. It defaults @ dynamic, meaning it only comes on when it gets hot. I read you can bump it up past 850, but why? I have no need. Currently I have it at 750 mhz (good power\perf balance) =o)

Overall Review: For the price, you can't beat it. If all you need is basic wireless, this is it.

Great Bang For The Buck

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ - Athlon 64 Newcastle 1.8 GHz Socket 754 Processor - ADA2800AXBOX

Comments: Just got this cpu last night, paired it with 512 megs Mushkin DDR400 and a cheap Chaintech SK8T800 motherboard. I was Looking for a budget upgrade, my old computer was an XP 1800+. I was able to last this long because of my video card - Radeon 9800 Pro. I haven't had a chance to run the benchmarks yet, however I can already tell it's faster. And if you can visibly notice the difference in Windows, then the computer is DEFINITELY faster! I placed the order around 11am, at 2:19pm it was on a FedEx truck, NewEgg is awesome. Don't ever change NewEgg!!! :)
