Very useful and solid

BYTECC HD-BOX25K Dual 2.5" Hard Drives Protection Box
BYTECC HD-BOX25K Dual 2.5" Hard Drives Protection Box

Pros: Solid, sturdy, holds bare 2.5 inch hard drives safely and securely for storage or travel I have used them with SATA drives, and the plastic SATA connectors are not prone to damage by the foam rubber pad in the lid of the container. (perhaps other reviewer was concerned about the pins on an IDE drive, but NO problems with SATA drives.) In fact, the foam is essential to provide just enough padded pressure to prevent the drives from moving around. Good amount of plastic spacer material and hard plastic construction to make me feel very comfortable transporting bare drives securely. Also, the latch *needs* to be rather tight/robust to maintain the slight pressure from foam pad on edge of drives, and to not be prone to open accidentally.

Cons: A bit pricey considering they are simply storage containers, but worth it considering I see no other manufacturer building this product.

Bad Sectors creeping in !

SAMSUNG Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: (Cons are greater than Pros if you get a bad drive.) Benchmarks faster than 7200 RPM 500GB Hitachi (HTS725050A9A364) I was replacing. Quiet, large capacity, good price.

Cons: Bad Sectors early on! Cannot use this drive.

Overall Review: Were only 4 reviews when I bought from Newegg. I disregarded the 2 about bad sectors. Now I question this drive's reliability: Disk Cloning software reported disk error early on, so ran chkdsk /r and seemed to resolve. Later, got some other disk error, decided to use Samsung Diagnostic boot CD, found numerous errors, diagnostic recommended "Erase HDD" which translates into doing low level format. Took 5 hours to format, then ran surface scan again, (more hours) and reported "No errors" I hoped that I just had a drive with a few bad sectors, needed to be re-mapped, HOPED that would be the end of it. WRONG. Couple weeks into using cloned Windows 7 on the drive, drive issues seemed to crop up, ran Samsung Diagnostic again, 2 new bad sectors. Definitely have to either return, replace, or RMA the drive. Haven't decided if I *trust* this model now. If you buy this drive, I recommend doing disk checks and if things start seeming "wrong" to check the drive with Samsung diagnostic.

D.O.A. plus too small for drive

Vantec NexStar 3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 & eSATA External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure (Onyx Black) - Model NST-260SU-BK
Vantec NexStar 3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 & eSATA External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure (Onyx Black) - Model NST-260SU-BK

Pros: LED shines through "Vantec" logo on front

Cons: Arrived DOA/ Will not accomodate a Hitachi 100GB drive removed from Lenovo ThinkPad! Simply will NOT FIT.

Overall Review: Bought this on account of the positive reviews, but disappointed! Obviously something arriving DOA means questionable quality control. Tested with drive prior to attempt to insert drive+circuit board into the aluminum enclosure. Blue light came on, and windows could see device, but no power to drive. Tried adding other sources of power, USB *and* external supply, no luck. Now, just for this review, I'm trying to insert into the metal enclosure, and the sides of the case (actually the tubular channels running the length on each side, into which the screw threads are bored) are too close and a this Hitachi drive will not fit! Not even part of the way. Wish Macally had a SATA enclosure similar to their PHR-250CC of which I have bought a half dozen, all of which are superb and much higher build quality.

I'm going to buy another !w

macally PHR-250CC Aluminum 2.5" IDE USB & 1394 External Enclosure
macally PHR-250CC Aluminum 2.5" IDE USB & 1394 External Enclosure

Comments: Just got this today, and I'm very impressed. Workmanship *much* better than others tried (like Coolmax, which was defective and going back RMA) Unlike other reviewer, it took some care, but inserting the drive WITH mounting screws attached was no problem. 4 Rubber bumpers running the length on top and bottom are nice touch, (dark stripes in the photos) less likely to slip, and less noise too. Perfmon showed drive transfer (on 5400rpm drive) as ~72 Mbps USB 2.0 vs. ~120Mbps using Firewire 1394 interface.
