cool, fast, noiseless except noisy seeks

SAMSUNG HD502HI 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG HD502HI 500GB 5400 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - cheap - no vibration in your computer case - runs cool, 35C on idle (30C ambient temp) - runs as fast as a 7200rpm drive

Cons: - clearly audible seeks - this is not a retail package

Overall Review: This drive is almost perfect for low noise PC. I cannot hear the high pitches spindle hum at all and I don't detect any low frequency vibration that would shake the comp. case and give me a headache. The seeks are very noisy/easy to hear though and that's the main reason it got 4/5 eggs. I measured the drive speed with DiskBench and compared with another drive from newegg: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD102UJ 1TB 7200 RPM. The results are statistically identical: reading speeds of 1GB video file are about 95 MB/s. Copy speeds of 1GB file from one place to another on the same drive is about 50 MB/s. Creating speed (write speed) is about 250-400MB depending where on the disk the file is written. These are numbers for BOTH drives. What I find surprising is that they are so identical at different revolutions speeds. Another surprising thing is that the reading speed is below SATA 1.5 standard (max 150MB/s). The drive came in plastic box with 4 screws. Sorry but this is OEM package not retail

noisy power supply

HEC 6K28BSOH48D Black / Silver 0.8mm SECC Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 485W Power Supply
HEC 6K28BSOH48D Black / Silver 0.8mm SECC Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 485W Power Supply

Pros: Front panel is polished metal combined with plastic. Doesn't look bad.

Cons: The power supply is very noisy.

Overall Review: The polished metal front panel doesn't look bad but definitely doesn't look as good as the Dell Inspiron 530 models that have silver-looking coating everywhere. The 530 coating is more sparkly while the polished metal of that case is duller. The power supply of this case is indeed 485W unlike what other review was claiming that newegg doesn't give the correct wattage. I am building a low-noise desktop and the power supply of this case is just too noisy for that. I bought another cheap case with power supply: Athenatech A412BB.400 Black / Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ATX 2.01v 400W Power whih is totally noise-less.

Silence is priceless

Pros: - no more fan noise - quick and snappy for documents, internet browsing, watching videos - 4 USB 3.1 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports - doesn't heat up too much

Cons: Windows 11 Updates breaks Intel audio/video drivers

Overall Review: I got the model with N5105 processor because it heats up less than N6005 and the passive cooling is limited in the heat it can dissipate. It is typically running in the 50-65C temperature range most of the time, at an ambient temperature of 25C. It will heat up more if you do something more intensive like a virus scan or Windows update. I got a cheap 500GB M.2 SATA SSD and a USB 3.0 enclosure for it, to clone the internal SSD and save backups of the personal/data files. In case the internal SSD fails, I will just replace it with the external SSD. The last Windows 11 Pro Updates on 10/12/23 broke the sound/video over HDMI. I could either listen to the sound but with a frozen video or watch the video but without HDMI sound to my TV. Rolling back or updating the Intel UHD Graphics drivers (includes the HDMI sound too) did not resolve the problem, which seems to be in the Windows Updates. I wiped the SSD clean and installed Windows 11 Pro from scratch - had to unplug the internet cable or it was giving blue screens during installation. This time around, I made a Restore point before installing the latest Windows Updates again, which again broke the sound/video. I went back to the Restore point and forbid the Windows Updates for 5 weeks. Windows tips: - always make a Restore point before any Windows Update - you never know what it will break! - unplug the Internet while setting up Windows 11, so it will let you set up a local account without an email. - in the Power plan advanced settings, change "Hibernate after" to 0 minutes (that forbids hibernation) and set "Allow hybrid sleep" to On (that allows saving the sleep state both in RAM and on the SSD, useful in case of power failure). In that way, you can wake up the computer from sleep from the keyboard or mouse. Otherwise, after a few hours of sleep it goes into hibernation and then the only way to wake it up is by pressing the power button, which is the component most probable to break. - let the Windows install the Intel Graphics Command Center or do it yourself. It substitutes for a graphics card and makes the colors and contrast more vibrant and pleasant to watch. - if you hate the fat Windows 11 task bar, install Explorer Patcher and in its Properties select for Windows 10 taskbar style and Small Taskbar icon size.

goog but fingerprints 2

ASUS Eee PC 1018PB-BK801 Black Intel Atom N450(1.66 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook
ASUS Eee PC 1018PB-BK801 Black Intel Atom N450(1.66 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook

Pros: slim everywhere look - very sexy, long lasting battery, light, fast enough for most tasks under windows 7

Cons: low quality web cam; right shift key too small for touch typing; clicking hard drive (resolved); fingerprints on lid but not that noticeable

Overall Review: I am writing my second review on this netbook. I've had it for almost a month and it is very close to the perfect netbook. I resolved the clicking harddrive with a free program called quietHDD. You have to put it in the startup folder so it starts automatically with Windows. It basically alows you to disable the Advanced Power Management of the hard drive. The fingerprints on the chasis are not that noticeable as I thought initially and do not bother me enough to feel the need to wipe the unit off. The only remaining grips are the small right shift key which is an obstacle for fast touch typing capitals. Another problem is the inferior quality of the web cam. It is pixelized and the software is not very smart at getting the correct settings at some basic situations - sometimes it washes out part of the picture completely. Oh well I can live with that but I wish Asus stops putting such low quality cams on their netbook.

good but fingerprints

ASUS Eee PC 1018PB-BK801 Black Intel Atom N450(1.66 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook
ASUS Eee PC 1018PB-BK801 Black Intel Atom N450(1.66 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook

Pros: attractive brushed metal chassis; slim everywhere, no protruding battery; opens up sufficiently to be used on your lap; responsive; sound loud enough to watch netflix on speakers; Windows 7 Starter; MS Word and Excel starter but with ads; Synaptic touchpad with multifinger gestures, two finger scrolling, momentum, coasting etc; no significant heating when working on battery

Cons: 2 out of 3 orders came with dead battery - not charging; loudly clicking hard drive; chasis and touchpad pick up fingerprints; touchpad has weird stiff mouse buttons; chiclet keyboard not good for fast touch typing, small right shift and you have to press the keys fully to register;

Overall Review: Apparently comes from Best*buy since there is software that wants to install. 2 out of 3 orders came with not charging battery. I figured it's better to return than wait on Asus deliver new battery and possibly find out the problem is the unit. Windows 7 Starter is like any other version except some less usable options are not available and you can't change the wallpaper - big deal. The netbook is responsive with 1GB RAM, no need to upgrade. The whole touchpad is one plane - clicking requires pressing its corners and its kind of stiff. I'd rather have normal separate buttons. I used Partition Wizzard (free) to repartition the hard drive to C and D. That way I can change or reinstall the operating system on C without erasing the data on D. The hard drive clicks due to its power conservation settings. The Win 7 power settings do not seem to alter those so I used CrystalDiskInfo (free) to disable the hard drive APM (Advanced Power Management) and the clicking stopped.

cool overclocker

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.16 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8500
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.16 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8500

Pros: Had it for 2.5 months. I constantly run it at 3.9 GHz / FSB 1720 MHz. Ambient temp is about 20C, idle temp around 43C, heavy calculation in Mathematica reaches 67C. My case has only two 8mm 1500 rpm fans and is very low noise. Motherboard easily overclocks to 4.05 GHz / FSB 1800 MHz but the CPU fan becomes noticeable and temperatures under heavy load reach 75C which I'm not comfortable with. The two cores allow me to perform calculation and watch streaming Netflix movie at the same time.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: The stock cooler is ok in terms of cooling - you don't need anything fancier. I chose Alpine 7 Pro instead cause it's quieter. The pushpins are ok, sometimes too much friction and hard to get through, I'd rather have bolts. My motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R. It has a program EasyTune that overclocks automatically - I justs push a button and don't care about going to BIOS to tweak. Some of these boards are defective - my first one couldn't overclock at all - dropping Mathematica kernel, blue screens when watching Netflix streaming movies etc. The second one is just perfect - overclocks on automatic settings.
