Its a keeper

HP ENVY NV4-1130US 14" Ultrabook
HP ENVY NV4-1130US 14" Ultrabook

Pros: Let me start off by saying that i don't do a lot of reviews but the lack of reviews on this ultrabook almost stopped me from buying it. Anyway, here goes: 1. Build quality is top notch 2. Backlit keyboard is very handy. Its a white backlight and i am happy to say there isn't a lot of light bleeding through the keys. 3. The touchpad is important, especially with Windows 8 and i am happy to say it worked perfectly out of the box. 4. My other usual pet peeve is fan noise. With these ultra low voltage ivy bridge chips, there is no excuse to always have the fan running. Happy to report that fan noise is not disruptive even when the CPU ramps up. 5. Don't care to comment on the beat audio hype but as far as laptop speakers go, these are decent enough. No complains. 6. 14 inch form factor gives it a perfect footprint for mobile productivity and the light weight helps too. 7. Finally, initially i thought it was a hybrid drive but reading further, it seems that its a 500 gig 5400 rpm hdd with a 32gig msata drive. I have a 256gb samsung series 840 ssd standing by to replace the mechanical hdd but to be honest this thing is super snappy with very fast boot times. The third gen core i5 and 6 gigs of RAM are great as well. As far as upgrading RAM goes, its typical ultrabook fare where 4 gigs is soldered on and there is one DIMM slot to possibly upgrade. Not quite sure what the RAM can be maxed to but i would assume 8 gigs tops would be cheap to do and suffice quite well. 8. Another very important thing for laptops as far as i am concerned is wireless connectivity and again happy to list that as a strength for this ultrabook. Summary: With a $50 rebate, this was an all around solid buy for $600. I am a bit of a tech addict (if you are on this site, then you probably are too!) and am guilty of changing my equipment all the time but i fully intend to use this as my daily driver for a long time.

Cons: not really cons but here are things that i can live with but wouldn't mind if there were improvements: 1. Screen. Usual 1366x768 resolution glossy screen. My 5 year old dell d620 had a 14inch 1600x900 matt finish screen that trumped this in every way. That being said, I can look at this screen all day and not be too bothered by it. I would class it as acceptable. 2. Battery is a 4 cell and again it is ok. Not sure i was able to get the claimed 5 hour life but heavy usage on about 60% brightness yielded some 4 hours and change. Again, an acceptable performance. 3. FINGER PRINT MAGNET. Outer lid and even the red finish base is not immune to finger prints. A cool skin for the top outer lid might be in order.

Overall Review: A few cons prevent this from being a 5 star laptop for me but i do believe the bang for your buck is amazing. There is a plethora of $600 ultrabooks popping up and this makes a compelling case for itself. Looks like with any ultrabook, it is a bit of a pain to upgrade hdd and ram but at least its upgradable. I recommend this if you are in the market for a ultrabook at this price point. Thanks for reading my review, i don't do a lot of reviews so hopefully this helped you make up your mind.

Not too shabby

IOGEAR GKM561R Black 2.4GHz Wireless HTPC Multimedia Keyboard with Laser Trackball and Scroll Wheel
IOGEAR GKM561R Black 2.4GHz Wireless HTPC Multimedia Keyboard with Laser Trackball and Scroll Wheel

Pros: 1. Nice Size, feels comfortable in hand 2. Scroll wheel is a good addition 3. 3 Different DPI settings for the mouse 4. Some WMC shortcut keys for your HTPC use Overall, does not feel cheap. Gets the job done.

Cons: Ok, so heres the deal. You are not buying this primarily for the keyboard. The reason you are getting this particular unit is because it is a all in one solution. So the tracker ball is a very important part of this device. Unfortunately that is where is fails utterly. Why make a tracker ball that seem to have no friction or grip on your finger at all. The scroll wheel feels wonderful to the touch but the tracker ball gets frustrating after a while. It makes it a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Overall Review: 60 day return policy with the holiday shopping so i will give myself some time to try to get used to it. Otherwise, back it goes and with the usual super awesome Newegg service i don't think it will be a problem. My advice, if this is what you need and the price is right, then go ahead and get it. But do keep the original packaging just in case....

correction

HP ENVY NV4-1130US 14" Ultrabook
HP ENVY NV4-1130US 14" Ultrabook

Pros: In my review I mentioned that only one dimm was available for RAM upgrade and that the rest of the ram was soldered on board. That was wrong and resulted from bad research. There are two easy to reach dimm slots. Noticed it when I was upgrading the hdd to a samsung series 840 256GB SSD. Also an easily accessible 32gig msata ssd for ssd caching. Sorry for the mistake and hope the correction helps.

Cons: Still the same cons I listed in my original review.

All around good router.

D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit
D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Easy to setup, do not really need the installation cd. Make sure you know information like dns servers for your ISP. I have charter high speed and setup was easy. 4 gigabit ports were primary motivation for my decision to purchase this router. Other choice for me was the linksys E2000 which seemed evenly speced. The dir655 has been around for ever and has had a lot of firmware revisions so i assume most bugs are ironed out by now. If you are buying this router you probably are aware that it is a single band router (no 5GHz) so thats not a minus. get something else if you need the less crowded 5GHz channel. I rely on netflix and hulu for my TV fix and this router does not disappoint. With 18Megs down from charter, i have a htpc, a roku box and my home office pc along with a nas hooked up to the Gigabit ports and i love it. QOS left on auto seems to take care of streaming and voip (skype) well enough. Two more laptops, smartphone and ipad2 use the wireless which is on a mixed 802.11G & N

Cons: This router came out in 07 i think so its likely to be at end of life and that would mean no more firmware revisions from dlink but to be honest i think it is pretty up to date. Also i have not used it yet but the usb port on this router can be used to share a printer or a external HDD but only one client pc can connect to it at any time. Not to big of a con but just an fyi. Not sure if white is a good color for a router but then again it is a personal choice and just a cosmetic thing. It could be painted yellow and it would be ok as long it works 100%. The lights on front are blue and are pretty bright. Not a whole lot of cons and even the ones i listed are not major.

Overall Review: Other reviewers noted that tech support is horrible, i have not had to deal with them but clue less wonders reading scripted support questions would suck!

Sorry but i don't get the fuss over this cooler

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP
ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP

Pros: Installs on the stock AMD brackets and no need to install after market brackets or take out yr mobo. Comes with half decent thermal paste and is quiet. Looks impressive (fails to deliver though). Super easy installation. These were the reason i bought this thing but alas...

Cons: Ok so it fails miserably to do the one thing it is meant to do and that is to protect my hard earned cpu and for an after market cooler from a reputable company it was pretty meh....temps were a few degrees shy of the stock cooler and the fan on it would stop working every so often while i was testing. Would need to kind flick it to get it going again. Went with the corsair h50 instead and the extra money was so worth it. Keeps my 945 nice and cool.

Overall Review: Looks better than it performs. Seems to have some issues with its fan as other reviewers have also noted. Try the hyper 212 plus instead at around the same price (although the 212 is a harder install) to protect your precious cpu. Just saying...

How is this only 20bux?

Sennheiser - Professional DJ styled - Closed Dynamic Bass Headphones (HD 202)
Sennheiser - Professional DJ styled - Closed Dynamic Bass Headphones (HD 202)

Pros: Ok so i am no audiophile (not even sure i spelt the word correctly) but these headphones sound great! i was looking for a pair of headphones in this price bracket and found two, these 202's and also the 201's. I decided to get the 202's but newegg realized that it had two similar products competeing against each other and quickly took the 202's off sale and it went back to 40bux. So no big deal, i went ahead and bought the 201's as they both had great reviews. the 201's sounded good, well balanced sound. However the left ear piece would have random bits of static so i returned it and lo and behold the 202's were back on sale so of course i bought those right away. THEY ARE TONS better than the 201's, more comfortable, don't know about all the reviews that said it didn't cover their ears completely. I had no problem with that and i have average sized ears! Lower frequency response is good, mids are ok and the highs are good too. Nothing a little tweaking with the eq cant fix.

Cons: Long cord can either be a plus or a minus though it did come with a clip to wrap the cord around. the mids sounded a bit overshadowed by the lows and the highs but once again use your eq to tweak it to yr preference and you wont be dissappointed.

Overall Review: Are these better than my friends V moda head phones, no bu then again the v moda's were 200 bux and these were 20! and in no way were they 10 times worse than the vmoda so figure it out! Can safely say you wont be able to get better 20 dollar head phones than these.
