Better then Intel Pentium D

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.4 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA4600CUBOX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.4 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA4600CUBOX

Pros: Multi-tasks much more smoothly than Intel Pentium D processors. Absolutely awesome playing top games like FEAR, Doom3, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Titan Quest, etc. Using an Asus MB I was able to overclock this processor from 2.4 to 2.7 GHz with just air cooling (and Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease) - runs at 2.64 GHz all day without breaking a sweat, idles around 34~36C.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I've always used Intel processors (P2, P3, P4 mobile, P4) but the more I used Intel the more I wanted to try out AMD. I just bought a new Dell XPS400 in January '06 with a 3.0GHz Pentium D processor, and let me tell you this AMD 4600+ just mops the floor with it. Overall the change from the Pentium to the Athlon wasn't quite night and day, but for anyone coming from Intel should immediately fall in love with AMD. Super smooth, great performance... it just beats out the Pentium 830 I had hands down. AMD rocks :)

Capable and Reliable!!!

EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I bought this mb so I could upgrade to a Core 2 Duo processor (from AMD Athlon X2 w/ ASUS 590sli Deluxe wireless), and so far I have no regrets. The layout of the board itself is pretty neat, with (for the most part) plenty of space and connections for just about anything you might want to install. The BIOS is easy to use and comes with plenty of fun menus you can mess around with (overclocking options abound, lots of control over pretty much any component attached to the board). So far I haven't had any problems with anything - changing BIOS settings is easy and fun, and so far the board has been nothing but reliable.

Cons: The only real con is that the PCI slots are located too close to the PCIe x16 slots. I have two Nvidia 7900 GT (board + fan = 1 slot only) video cards linked together in SLI and both my sound card and wireless ethernet card are only about 1/4" away from them. I'm not too worried about it, but there's got to be a way for these mb manufacturers to arrange the slots in such a way that there is still room for other PCI cards. This isn't really a knock against this particular board or EVGA since it seems all SLI board have this problem. Just kind of a bummer :(

Overall Review: I don't have any regrets buying this motherboard, it is very reliable and quite capable and should be more than adequate for most home users. If you like tinkering around with stuff and especially if you want to overclock your system, this is a great board to buy. Highly recommended - Great job EVGA!!

What a BEAST!!!

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8400
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Core 2 Duo Wolfdale Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80570E8400

Pros: OK, so I just upgraded from an AMD Athlon 4600+ (2.4GHz) processor (ASUS mb - 590 sli) to this beast (EVGA mb - 780 sli). Starting up Windows XP and running general applications I can notice a bit of a speed increase, though it isn't what I'd call a "night and day" difference. However, when playing games (Crysis, COD2, FEAR, Oblivion, NFS Most Wanted) the speed increase is most definitely noticeable. Other than the CPU and mb the only other chance was the RAM (from DDR2 667 up to 800). While the AMD process was great, I was only really able to OC it to about 2.6Ghz or so (any higher would lead to eventual crashing when playing games), but I've already OC'd the E8400 to 3.6GHz without a single hitch... It's been running non-stop for 2 days now (playing games, music, running various apps simultaneously) and I haven't had a single problem. This processor is just an absolute beast, and what a bargain!

Cons: The fan that comes with the processor isn't the greatest... Well, it's not the fan itself, it's just the plastic push-pins used to mount it to the motherboard are really cheap feeling and really more trouble than they are worth. The fan is pretty small (as in depth, doesn't stick out far) and so far has kept the CPU below 50 C even when under high load. Still, you might want to consider buying a replacement aftermarket fan, just because those push-pins don't really feel like they are cut out for the long haul...

Overall Review: I'm not sure how fast this processor is willing to overclock on standard air cooling (I did use Arctic Silver instead of the waxy stuff that comes on the fan), but it really doesn't surprise me to see other people getting speeds up to and exceeding 4GHz. I'm only using DDR2 800 RAM, so I don't know how much higher I'll be able to push the FSB, but even at stock speeds this processor is very fast and reliable... (though you should definitely give overclocking a shot!)

Great for Overclocking

OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8004GK

Pros: What fantastic RAM! I just bought a new EVGA 780 sli motherboard along with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (Wolfdale) rated at 3 GHz (E8400), and have already overclocked it to 3.6GHz without a single hitch. The RAM is running at 960MHz (the timings have gone up significantly as per the automatic BIOS settings in the motherboard, to about 7-7-7-20, approx.). I haven't pushed it any higher than that nor have I tried lowering the timings, but so far I really couldn't be happier. Great RAM!!

Cons: Not really a con (performance is just incredible), but I'm curious to see if this RAM can run at 960MHz (or faster) with slightly lower timings. Before I overclocked the FSB I lowered the timings to 4-4-4-12 and it ran problem-free... just curious why it is at 7-7-7-20 at 960MHz, I'll look into it soon.

Overall Review: Very reliable RAM even when overclocked. My computer has been on non-stop for the past two days (since I overclocked) and has been running problem-free even after playing games (Oblivion, FEAR, COD2, Crysis) and opening multiple applications. You won't have any regrets if you decide to purchase this RAM :)

Tons of Power, Very Stable/Reliable

Cooler Master RS-600-ASAA 600 Watts Continuous ATX Form Factor 12V V2.2 / SSI standard EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC (0.99) PFC Power Supply

Pros: Lots of wires to power all kinds of accessories. Very nice chrome finish (like a mirror) with a very solid construction to it. Large fan to dispense all the heat. This is just a good, reliable PS with tons of headroom. Two thumbs up.

Cons: There are SO many wires coming out of this thing!!!

Overall Review: I play a lot of video games and will be running dual GeForce 7900 GT's in SLI soon. I can't imagine this power supply having any trouble powering them both. It's only been a week so we'll see, but so far I haven't had a single problem, and I leave my computer on all the time after playing games (FEAR, Doom3, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, etc) for hours. So far, no complaints, just a solid PS. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this power supply again in the future.

Excellent Looks & Design

Cooler Master Wave Master TAC-T01-EK Black All Aluminum Alloy ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Cooler Master Wave Master TAC-T01-EK Black All Aluminum Alloy ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Awesome design, lots of interior space, shielded air intake, slot for fan on top of case, tons of expansion bays, loads of room especially considering it is a mid tower case. Sliding MB tray was a big help when installing the MB or if I need a little extra room to work around in there. Great design, excellent air flow (with top mounted fan (optional)), great looks, no regrets. :)

Cons: I kind of wish there was space for one more exhaust fan in the back, or more space for a 120mm fan on top. Air flow is very good though, so no complaints here really.

Overall Review: Installing everything into this case was a real breeze. This was my first time building my own PC too, and there were no problems. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this case again in the future, it really is awesome.
