works well with Linux

EVGA GeForce GT 740 Superclocked 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card 04G-P4-3748-KR
EVGA GeForce GT 740 Superclocked 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card 04G-P4-3748-KR

Pros: installed without difficulty on Linux Mageia-4 64 bit. I had to recompile and reinstall the nvidia driver because I use drivers from nvidia rather than the packaged driver provided by my distro, but I have to recompile that driver any time I make a change that affects the graphics anyway. Card works without issue, supports the 3D rendering, supports compiz, is quite adequately fast.

Cons: none noted so far

Overall Review: I purchased this card for the memory, to replace a GT-240 with 1 GB of memory because I kept running out of video memory. My system has 32 GB main memory, I use a 1920x1080 monitor, run 16 desktops, and run many virtual machines, mostly with graphical interfaces. After installing this card, I noted that this card, unlike its predecessor, reports on memory usage. It showed me that I am routinely using about 1.5 GB of video RAM, hence my problems with the 1GB card become obvious. Card installed without issue, and I now seem to have plenty of graphical headroom...and it shows because my earlier problems with the display (which would have been manifesting by now) are completely gone.

nice while it worked

Pros: neat fit in otherwise unused floppy drive bay, looked good. Plugged into mobo USB3 20 pin header.

Cons: ...unfortunately, it stopped working after about a month.

still going strong

HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5" 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging

Pros: I have 11 of these. Working 24/7, no issues.

Cons: none

Overall Review: Update 9/21/19... I still have the same 11 HGST 4TB drives in service, as well as one 3TB model and two 6 TB models. The 11 4TB drives and the 3TB drive are all over 5 years old, all run 24/7/365, and none are showing any signs of age or failure. I reviewed this drive on 10/15/14 and again in Feb 2015 when I purchased another one. First review was about the first 10 I purchased for my NAS. That NAS has now been running 24/7 for just over a year. The 10 drives are RAID 6 on an ARECA controller card. Array is scrubbed for errors on a weekly basis. In the past year, there have been no errors and no discrepancies of any sort. The drive I purchased for my workstation has also been working without issue. Last weekend, the workstation crashed hard and would not restart. I had to reinstall the boot loader on the boot drive (an SSD), and I had to copy a backup of the crypto table into the HGST 4 TB drive that is in the workstation. Both drives also required filesystem repair. I have no idea what happened; nothing in the logs, and the system is on a UPS so power problems should not be an issue. Whether the problem was software, hardware, or power is unknown but this drive WAS affected. It restored without incident, however, passed all subsequent reliability checks, and is in service with apparently no ill effects. My system is an Asus Sabertooth 990 FX R2 motherboard with Phenom-II 955 processor, 32 GB RAM, Nvidia GT740 video, two Samsung 940 EVO 500 GB SSDs, one HGST 3 TB and one HGST 4TB, with a Coolermaster 750W power supply. System runs Linux Mageia 4 as host and commonly has 7 or 8 virtual machines (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD) up and running. Why it crashed...dunno. Drive survived, but did need to be recovered.

cannot recommend

Rosewill RCW-566 - 50-Foot Cat 6 Network Cable - Black
Rosewill RCW-566 - 50-Foot Cat 6 Network Cable - Black

Pros: cheap

Cons: cable is defective. Intermittent connection on one end. I will not RMA; cost of shipping the thing back would exceed its value, particularly after the time to do it was factored in. However, I cannot recommend this product.

works fine

Pros: I plugged it in. It powers up, it works. Nothing else to say.

Cons: none so far

Overall Review: I purchased this with a Sempron processor to power a NAS I was building. I put an Areca 1261 SATA RAID controller card into the PCIe slot. The processor was sold as a single-core but apparently it had a second core - which this motherboard successfully unlocked. Plugged it in, powered it up...it works. I'm not using the sound so I have no idea if there is a problem with it...the OS is NAS4Free (FreeBSD) and is embedded (running off USB stick), and it works fine. The array is an encrypted ZFS filesystem and the processor maxes out about the same time as the 1GB ethernet connection does, so I'm satisfied. Build quality of the board is good, no particular issues.

seems fine

AMS DS-356TL SATA Backplane Module (600MB/s)
AMS DS-356TL SATA Backplane Module (600MB/s)

Pros: compact, excellent airflow through it, fan is quiet. Quality of construction seems to be very good. Doors and latches are metal.

Cons: none so far

Overall Review: I purchased two of these to install into a modified Thermaltake Chaser 21 case for a NAS that I am building. That NAS is now assembled, there are 10 HGST 4TB drives in it with an Areca RAID controller, and the array is initializing...should be done in about 3 days. Airflow through the backplane is excellent. The device seems solid and rigid. All drives were recognized in both backplanes, though I did have to R&R one drive once before it was properly detected. To this point I am very pleased. I cannot comment yet about reliability and longevity but looking at the design I do believe they have addressed all the complaints that were levied at some of their older products; from the look of it this device should hold up well.
