Most Critical Review

Almost a winner. Not quite.

SolidRun Video Device CuBox-i4 Pro. V2 1.2GHz Quad Core Android Media Player
SolidRun Video Device CuBox-i4 Pro. V2 1.2GHz Quad Core Android Media Player

Pros: I had a long list here, but Newegg's site logged me out and discarded everything I had written when I pressed the submit button. Thanks a lot, website developers. Suffice it to say that this box has an outstanding number of built-in ports, and its linux support is getting better and better.

Cons: I had a detailed description of two problems here, but Newegg's site logged me out and discarded everything I had written when I pressed the submit button. Thanks a lot, website developers. Problem 1: It can't output video at fractional refresh rates like 23.976 Hz. This means that video from Blu-Ray and American TV broadcast sources will only play smoothly if the audio is reprocessed. In other words, you can have smooth video or smooth audio bitstream passthrough, but not both. Problem 2: It overheats and fails when the core components reach about 86 degrees C, which is very easy to reach when the CPU and GPU are doing much work. This makes it unreliable as a mini desktop PC.

Overall Review: I was very excited about this device, but considering problems 1 and 2, it turns out that it's almost useless to me. Maybe I can sell it to someone who wants to play video without a surround sound setup. I'm going to try the Raspberry Pi 2 (with a TOSLINK HAT) instead.
