Good Bang For Your Buck

Intel X25-V 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2MP040G2R5
Intel X25-V 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2MP040G2R5

Pros: Bought an X25-V to install in wifey's notebook (and wanted to compare its performance to an X25-M, G2). But before it was installed in the notebook, I tested it in my primary trading rig. CDM Scores on XP, non-aligned partition... (Intel claims X25s are "agnostic" as to partition alignment) 186/42 157/45 22/42 129/44 Those are very fine scores for a budget SSD. Of course the the bigger ones are faster on sequential writes, but you can't do much of that on these due to size. (Few other SSDs, regardless of size or cost, do as well on "overall-performance-critical, small file writes"... for which the X25s are apparently optimized.)

Cons: Arrived with firmware 02HB... had to flash to get most current, 02HD. Had difficulty flashing from optic drive... others have claimed this problem also. Difficulty came from "A:\", drive letter reference from ISO. Copied files to flash drive and edited-out reference to "A:\". Made suggestion to Intel to eliminate drive letter reference in future ISO versions. Tech person who took my call said, "Makes sense... will consider."

Overall Review: TRIM isn't automatically supported by XP, but Intel has a "manual TRIM" function which takes about 10 seconds to clean cells. In real-time use, perceived no difference in performance from my usual 80G, X25-M. If you want excellent performance on a budget (especially on XP) you could install the X25-V + a large platter drive.. <$200, total. Good bang for your buck!

Runs but slow

Koutech PCI to USB2.0 Card Model IO-PU520
Koutech PCI to USB2.0 Card Model IO-PU520

Pros: Works on XP driver.

Cons: Runs about 50% speed of the USB on mobo. Might be OK to run slower devices from it.. keyboard, mouse, printer.

Overall Review: Tried to install driver from their website. Hosed-up my system to the point it took a long time to boot.. had to restore an earlier image. Disappointed.

No problems

Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 - 3 PCs
Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 - 3 PCs

Pros: Easy install on all 3 machines. (W7, 32bit) Seems light impact on computer performance whereas Avast sloooowed loading of many websites.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Never had virus or other malware problems, but with Cryptolocker and other nasties in the air, decided to beef up protection. W7-32bit. The only problem with Kaspersky was during start-up on my multi-display rig... appeared it was loading at the same time as my video card driver and was causing the desktop to display incorrectly... rotated wall paper image, icons on wrong monitor, etc. (not a problem on single-monitor computer, however.) To fix... right click Task Bar, then Properties/Customize. Set the Kaspersky line to "Show Icon & Notification". This causes the Kasperky icon to appear farther right in the system tray and apparently to load the AV sooner... prevents it from interfering with the video driver during boot.

Does what it's supposed to

HooToo® HT-PC003 Internal 19-Pin Motherboard Female Header to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Female 2-Port Slot Plate Cable Adapter (1.5 feet long)
HooToo® HT-PC003 Internal 19-Pin Motherboard Female Header to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Female 2-Port Slot Plate Cable Adapter (1.5 feet long)

Pros: Easy install. Same speed as their HT-PC002 PCIE card.

Cons: none

Overall Review: Received defective unit. Was replaced quickly and without hassle. Just what a Newegg seller should be.

Works OK, Don't Care For The Case

Patriot Memory Gauntlet 2 PCGTII25S Sleek thin design with aluminum trim 2.5" Black SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure
Patriot Memory Gauntlet 2 PCGTII25S Sleek thin design with aluminum trim 2.5" Black SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure

Pros: Works like it's supposed to. Decent speeds... CDM with Intel X25-M on W7-32bit... 184.5/86.4 128.2/86.3 13.7/47.0 Much faster on reads than USB 2.0, of course, and about 2X faster at copying folders. Backup copies my stock market data folder, 240MB/1450 files, in about 6 seconds.

Cons: I have the earlier Gauntlet model also. This Gauntlet 2's data transfer rate is about the same as its predecessor, but the case is annoying to open if you care/need to swap out the drive. There is not even a notch along the margin where the case parts snap together so that you can insert a screwdriver to pry it open. I had to insert a small screwdriver into one of the screw holes to pry a spot up and get my fingernail in there to keep it open until I could work the screwdriver around the margin. It's also shiny plastic and shows fingerprints like mad. Annoying compared to the earlier model, but I'll cope. Minus 1 Egg for the case.

Overall Review: Had bought one from another seller when Newegg didn't have in stock. Have since bought a 2nd.

What's not to like?

HooToo HT-PC002 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 2-Port PCI-E Add-On Expansion Card with Internal USB 3.0 19-Pin Motherboard Male Header & 5V 4-Pin Molex Power Connector (VIA VL800 Chipset, Solid Capacitors)
HooToo HT-PC002 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 2-Port PCI-E Add-On Expansion Card with Internal USB 3.0 19-Pin Motherboard Male Header & 5V 4-Pin Molex Power Connector (VIA VL800 Chipset, Solid Capacitors)

Pros: Works like it should. Decent speed. CDM scores on USB 3.0 external drive enclosure w/Intel X25-M SSD.... W7-32Bit. 188.4/94.7 89.0/94.9 14.4/36.0 I also have a PCI USB 3.0 card, and this HooToo is about 40% faster (CDM). However, in copying a 240MB folder w/1450 files, both 3.0 boards complete the task in about 6 seconds. With a USB 2.0 external drive mounted in the HooToo 3.0, it's a bit faster than when mounted in my mobo's USB 2.0. No apparent conflicts. Increased speed. So far, so good.

Cons: Didn't appreciate the downloaded driver being in WinRAR format. Annoyed at having to locate and install a WinRAR program first before extracting the driver.

Overall Review: Haven't tried the 19-pin header. Newegg website says "12 mo. warranty" while HooToo User Manual says "18 mo warranty". User Manual also says, "... only compatible with x1 and x16 slots", however mine is mounted in an x8 slot.
