SiliconDust HDHR4-2US-R HDHomeRun Connect 2-Tuner ATSC DLNA/UPnP Compatible Streaming Media Player

Pros: Plug and play. I like it. (Prior to this I used a FusionHDTV7 card for a few years until it died.) It is small and appears reliable. In the 3 months of use I had no issues. I am using this with MythTV running on Linux.

Cons: None I can think of.

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15.4" 2.30GHz 16GB Memory DDR3 1600 512GB PCIe-Based Flash Storage SSD OS X 10.9 Mavericks ME294LL/A

Pros: Great specs. Thin and light.

Cons: Screen is glossy and the reflection is distracting. Daytime use in office environment is the worst, home use where you can control the environment is best. Setting up a developer environment is harder than compiling and installing a Linux kernel. No package manager available by default, you better get started with that. Setup involves hours spent on forums and newsgroups. You need to get an Apple ID so you get stdlib installed. You have to install XQuartz to use remote X applications. The default timeout for remote X applications on this machine is less than 10 minutes. You better figure out how to change that otherwise your connection will break every 10 minutes! My favourite font (xfonts-terminus) is not available and not installable on this machine. With half of this effort one could setup/use Linux that is more customizable and developer user-friendly. No page up and page down keys. MacOS keyboard shortcuts are a pain to configure. No copy on select. You have to press command-C and command-V every time. No ethernet port. You have to use a converter that retails for $30.

Overall Review: I got this laptop at work, I did not have to buy it. My personal laptop is a T440s running Linux and I like that much more. (The T440s also has issues that needed newsgroup reading, but the end result is more pleasing and that machine is much more reasonably priced.)
