A very impressive laptop for the money

HP Laptop ENVY 15 Intel Core i5-2450M 6GB Memory 500GB HDD AMD Radeon HD 7690M 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit 15-3090CA

Pros: I was really excited about this purchase even though I'd be stepping out of my Asus comfort zone and going with a brand I never really cared for much, especially when it came to graphic intensive gaming. The Envy proved me wrong in most regards. I was able to run most of my modern, graphics hungry games on it with no trouble, all except one. For what you pay for, this is an impressive laptop. I never owned a laptop with so many speakers and a built in subwoofer, making this laptop my go to machine for music (compared to two Asus laptops and a custom build desktop) and the like. The 1080p supported screen is a very nice feature too, up until my purchasing of this laptop, I had no clue you could get such a high resolution out of a 15 inch screen. This laptop just begs to be used for medium-high gaming and all of your multimedia needs. It is sad that it is discontinued on Newegg now, but that is to be expected of a laptop of this age.

Cons: I spent weeks working with the game designers and using my own knowledge to tweak, modify, and change every aspect of the laptops configuration and software that I could think of to make World of Tanks run on this laptop to no avail. I eventually gave up and purchased an Asus, though I still own the Envy. The Switchable Graphics are a nice concept, but I do ultimately believe that is a large part of where my problem lies. I don't believe a (still beta) game like World of Tanks was designed to cooperate with hybrid graphics, much like how the game still only can utilize one CPU core, so I cannot fault the laptop entirely when it comes to this issue. Still, it is worth noting that if you want a rock solid gaming PC, I would avoid anything with hybrid graphics.

Overall Review: Unfortunately, being an nVidia guy, this incident doesn't do much to improve my opinion of ATI graphics, even if I am certain it isn't the dedicated graphics card that is the trouble, but rather the built in hybrid technology. I dropped 16 GB of RAM into the laptop (a very nice feature of this laptop) and currently use it for its originally intended purpose and multitasking, I just don't play World of Tanks on it.

JCO Mini Cube HD 1080p Wi-Fi Security Intelligent 180 Degree Panoramic Camera with Night Vision and 2-Way Audio
JCO Mini Cube HD 1080p Wi-Fi Security Intelligent 180 Degree Panoramic Camera with Night Vision and 2-Way Audio

Pros: When they're on sale, it's tough to beat the price for these cameras. I purchased 4 of them (new) for about $19 a piece and 4 of them after the original 4 as open box for $16 a piece. All I wanted was some cameras for around the house so I can monitor the house in real time remotely, and these things seemed like a decent option to accomplish that for the price.

Cons: After 1 day, I ended up returning one of the original 4 because it started to refuse to connect to my WiFi, and resetting it via the reset button did nothing. Three of the "open box" four were returned because they had already been registered to another user's account and this camera does not have any means possible that I can find online, in the documentation, or via the app, to unregister it from another user's account. The in app help page is unhelpful in suggesting you "tell the other person" to unregister the camera for you. That'd be easier to do if I bought this off of my neighbor, but I ordered it from newegg.com. When the cameras work they work well enough for the price. However, even with a Nighthawk X10 and some top tier internet for my area, several cameras drop off regularly. I have a detached garage only 50 feet from my house and the camera out there constantly drops off. Cameras on the first floor (my router is on the second floor) also have issues. Streaming the video in the app can be extremely choppy.

Overall Review: I wouldn't buy these used or open box again. I would consider buying them new for $19 or less on sale, however.

Decent Enough

Magece G2 Gaming Mice 3200 DPI 6 Buttons Professional Ergonomic Gaming Mouse for PC Mac Gamer
Magece G2 Gaming Mice 3200 DPI 6 Buttons Professional Ergonomic Gaming Mouse for PC Mac Gamer

Pros: I like the way it feels and the weight of it, it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for (basic mouse with scroll wheel and two side buttons). The price was pretty good too.

Cons: Unfortunately, something (I believe the internal weight) has dislodged and I can feel it shifting around inside the mouse if I move it suddenly or pick it up and hold it on it's side. The mouse also is way more sensitive than any other mouse I've owned when it comes to moving it on a mouse pad at a slight angle (slightly lifting the mouse when moving it). It can cause my cursor to fly all over the screen, which isn't very useful for gaming or even daily use.

Overall Review: I will be replacing this mouse and delegating it to the "backup" drawer.

Boot Drive Toast After 12 Months

Silicon Power Slim S60 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SP240GBSS3S60S25
Silicon Power Slim S60 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SP240GBSS3S60S25

Pros: This drive was an affordable option with pretty decent specs and a lot of positive reviews when I purchased it a year ago. All of those reasons contributed to my purchasing it for more than one of my machines.

Cons: After 12 months, I wake up to the wonderful "Windows cannot detect a boot drive" screen. After looking into it, it appears that the data structure/meta data has become corrupted and unrecoverable, or potentially some of the soldering points have become weak. I cannot tell. All I know is as a secondary drive, my machines attempt to initialize it as if it was a brand new, un-formatted drive. Considering I have valuable data on this drive, I am not going to take that chance. I have attempted many data recovery options so far as well as data structure repair utilities, so far, with no luck. As of this moment I have more than 48 hours invested in trying to solve this issue and I am losing a lot of hope. Even if I were to receive a replacement due to it being under warranty, I would not use the drive and will no go about slowly phasing out the Silicon Power SSDs I still am using in other machines.

Overall Review: Was a promising low cost option when I first started getting into SSDs, but now I can no longer trust the company. Unless this company plans to offer me a free total data recovery onto a brand new disc, I am not going to even consider this as an option for future SSD purchases.

Can't say I'm impressed

MSI Z170A GAMING M5 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
MSI Z170A GAMING M5 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Pros: This board is absolutely sexy and very easy to configure. It performed all of the tasks I threw at it, except for one crucial flaw...

Cons: DIMM1 and DIMM2 RAM sockets refused to work and placing any RAM module in either socket rendered the motherboard unable to post. It was discovered that this was the result of a bent pin on the CPU socket, which, as someone who has built many PCs before, I have to honestly say has never been an issue for me before. After discovering the MSI support board, it was easy to conclude that I am far from the only person who has had this issue with this board, which is a shame because it is an absolute beast if you're lucky enough to install your CPU without bending one of the pins, or, receiving a board that isn't already pre-bent.

Overall Review: Come on, MSI. You can do better than this... :(

Very Low Quality

DEEPCOOL Gamer Storm CAPTAIN 240 CPU Liquid Cooler AIO Water Cooling Ceramic Bearing Pump Visual Liquid Flow with Dual 120mm FDB PWM Fan Rubber Coating Deep Silent Support LGA 2011-v3
DEEPCOOL Gamer Storm CAPTAIN 240 CPU Liquid Cooler AIO Water Cooling Ceramic Bearing Pump Visual Liquid Flow with Dual 120mm FDB PWM Fan Rubber Coating Deep Silent Support LGA 2011-v3

Pros: It cools my PC, is rather quiet, and was easy to mount to my case. Setup was pretty painless compared to early liquid cooling setups.

Cons: Unfortunately, the plastic structure surrounding the portion of the unit that is placed over your CPU socket is of atrociously low quality. As mentioned by another reviewer, I only had to tighten the screws around the plastic bracket very gently by hand in order to break off one of the arms. I might consider gluing it back on at some point, but honestly it's probably not worth bothering as so many other reviewers report this unit's pump failing after less than a year of use. As someone who uses his computer very often, and very hard, I fully expect mine to fail in at least 8 months, in which case I will probably slap on a decent fan and call it a day.

Overall Review: I will be seriously hesitant to try a DEEPCOOL product in the future, having taken a chance on this one despite the mediocre review score.
