Great replacement for stock cooling

ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP
ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro - Compact Multi-Compatible Tower CPU Cooler | 92 mm PWM Fan | for AMD AM4 and Intel 115x CPU | Recommended up to 115 W TDP

Pros: Knocked a solid 10 degrees C off of my temps versus the default Intel HSF (on a Q6600 B3). Easy mounting if you read the instructions and don't go too hard on the pins. Almost inaudible if used with fan control. Very good performance for the money, and would probably be great for OCing dual cores.

Cons: Temperatures are still a bit high to be comfortable when under even a modest OC for the B3 Q6600 (3.0 GHz). Idles at core temps 46, 40, 37, 37 and CPU temp at 34. Loaded stats are core temps of 65, 64, 60, 60 with CPU temp at 56. Temps are probably better with the G0 stepping, though. My Q6600 consistently reads greater values on core0 versus the others regardless of HSF, so that might also skew a few things.

Overall Review: There's not much consistency in terminology for Q6600-based reviews here, making comparisons difficult to make based on them. In my case, "loaded" is after ten min. of 4-threaded Small FFTs in Prime95, "idle" is after 30 min. of no activity, "core" are the core junction temperatures (via Core Temp or SpeedFan +15 degrees) and "CPU" is the CPU case temp (as reported by the motherboard and found in SpeedFan or nVidia MonitorView). vCore is set at 1.33, within stock levels. All case fans and the F7P itself are run at 100% continuously for tests, with an ambient temp of 20 degrees C.

Servicable, if you can deal with its quirks

WD My Book Essential 1.5TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive WDBAAF0015HBK-NESN
WD My Book Essential 1.5TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive WDBAAF0015HBK-NESN

Pros: The My Book's a USB external hard drive that works mostly as advertised. It has a great price for what you get -- a barebones WD Green 1.5 TB (the drive in the enclosure) cost more than this when I'd ordered it. It's extremely quiet and doesn't go gonzo with the heat buildup. Remember, though, this is USB-only and thus fairly slow at transfers when compared to eSATA or Firewire, so is best primarily for backups or bulk storage of music or videos. It's not nearly responsive enough to, say, install games or applications on in many cases. For what it does, it works fine.

Cons: Nearly every problem I have with this product can be traced back to the SmartWare backup and encryption software preinstalled on this drive. SmartWare spawns a virtual CD that cannot be disabled without a firmware update and additional application (both provided by WD on their website, but not mentioned anywhere else). Under Vista and 7, it demands extra drivers be installed rather than just USB mass storage ones. Lastly, SmartWare is not a particularly good or efficient backup program; it takes a long time to actually do backups, doesn't offer much granularity in what's backed up, and consumes a lot of system resources for what it does (230 MB of RAM while idling). Apart from SmartWare issues, the My Book's enclosure housing is made out of cheap and extremely thin plastic and the internals get very easily misaligned. It's quite possible for the USB and power sockets to be wholly inaccessible due to this. Not exactly WD's best-built product.

Overall Review: The drive is, for once, preformatted to NTFS rather than FAT32, which is great for Windows users but suffers from slow performance under Snow Leopard and Linux and isn't supported on some devices that can use USB storage. I actually reformatted to ext3 for use on a NAS router, which has worked fine. Once you disable SmartWare, this becomes a quiet and unobtrusive USB bulk storage device. About the only reason I'd use the software is to exploit the drive's built in encryption function, but few people need that. Disabling it is the tricky part, however, as you have to know about the required firmware update ahead of time. Once done, it works like any other device of this type, but it's an annoying set of hoops to jump through. Recommended if you can find it cheap and know what you're getting into, which the product packaging does a poor job of outlining.

Nearly perfect, but the scroll wheel is short-lived

Logitech VX Revolution Black 8 Buttons Tilt Wheel Cordless Laser Mouse
Logitech VX Revolution Black 8 Buttons Tilt Wheel Cordless Laser Mouse

Pros: The ergonomics are great, even considering this is a notebook mouse. The size is right, it fits perfectly in my hand, all of the buttons are in the right places to easily reach. The scroll wheel was a dream to work with the first month or two, allowing very quick and precise movement up and down long pages. Battery life and range are also excellent. I've had it last 1.5-2 months on average per AA cell, and I actually use this as my desktop mouse. The VX has decent enough precision, though there's a tiny lag that becomes noticeable when gaming. Given that I got this to scroll through long spreadsheets rather than to play games, however, I have no complaints.

Cons: There is one major con that I've run into with this mouse -- the scroll wheel's rubber grip. This is not secured well to the wheel itself (looks like it was just strapped on with friction), resulting in it invariably stretching and lending a permanent "braking" effect to the wheel as it expands and rubs against the inside of the mouse. This is murder on what was billed as a "frictionless" scroll wheel, and after three months mine wouldn't complete even a single revolution in a flick. You could cut the band off (which immediately restores scroll speed), but this invalidates the warranty. Logitech is pretty good about trade-ins, however, so if you want to RMA to fix this every so often, it will probably be possible. I've RMAed this once then went with the band cutting after it manifested again.

Overall Review: A lesser issue with this mouse is that its RF transmitter is easily jammed once the batteries start drooping. If operating anywhere near a Wifi hub or laptop, it randomly and repeatedly cuts out for 0.5-1 second at a time (erratic movement and missed clicks) when the batteries are at around half charge or below. Easily enough remedied if using NiMH batteries (just charge regularly and keep fresh spares around), but it gets pretty wasteful if using alkalines.

One annoyance, but pretty good otherwise

Scythe Minebea NMB Silent IC Series 4710KL-04W-B19-V54 Case Cooling Fan
Scythe Minebea NMB Silent IC Series 4710KL-04W-B19-V54 Case Cooling Fan

Pros: Air noise at max output is quieter than the lowest setting for the stock fans on my P180B (Antec Tricool). Moves air and does it well. What else is there to say?

Cons: When the fan drops below around 70% speed, it starts exhibiting a very distinct electrical buzz, more audible than the fan itself if it were running at full. Since my motherboard's "SmartFan" speed control function insisted upon trying to run both fans at 60% or below when idling, this got very annoying very quickly. It took an override from SpeedFan or nTune to get the speed back up, whereupon the buzz disappeared. As this happens with both of these fans I have, I'm guessing it's inherent to the design rather than a defective unit.

Overall Review: I ordered two of these for my P180B -- one to replace the rear exhaust and one as a forward air intake. I ultimately ended up pegging the exhaust at 100% and limiting the intake to between 80-100% though the BIOS. This is noisier than I had expected, but both of these running is still only slightly more noisy than a single Tricool.

Pretty solid, with a few small nits

SCEPTRE X9g-Naga IV Black 19" 8ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 800:1, US Warranty

Comments: This is the second LCD I've attempted to order from Newegg, and I'm quite a bit more satisfied with this one. The picture is clear and sharp, the colors are vibrant and have good range (without the blue cast or blurring together of similar colors some other LCD models exhibit), and it works great with movies and games (having almost no ghosting). A very wide viewing angle and even lighting that's easy on the eyes rounds this out. Blacks are about as tolerable as they can get for an LCD. As for downsides, my unit came with one stuck pixel (permanently blue) and driver support was iffy; I had to download extra drivers from Sceptre's website as they weren't included in the box. The specs are also a bit misleading -- even if you set video output to 70 or 75 Hz in Windows (which the documentation claims is supported), the screen will automatically downscale this to 60 Hz (judging by the monitor's status screen in the OSD). Finally, the onboard speakers are a bit weak and deliver a constant, low-level hiss that doesn't go away when you drop volume to zero via the OSD; while not too annoying, I'd like the option of killing power to them entirely (especially if using an external set of speakers). It's an excellent gaming and video monitor overall, if you can get past a few minor defects.

Decent overall, but needs color calibration

FujiPLUS 19" TFT LCD SXGA LCD Monitor 12 ms D-Sub, DVI-D FP-988D
FujiPLUS 19" TFT LCD SXGA LCD Monitor 12 ms D-Sub, DVI-D FP-988D

Comments: For reference, this is my first LCD monitor, bought to replace a dying Sony 19" Trinitron CRT. My unit came over quite promptly, no problems there, but it's not quite what I expected. My unit came with a whopping six (!) dead pixels and the case was already opened when I received it. Color also had a strong bluish cast out of the box and it was weak in displaying warmer colors, even when set to lower color temperatures, though color calibration managed to correct most of this issue. Apart from this and the dead pixels, it has been working rather well so far. I haven't noticed any ghosting in movies or gaming, and the screen is bright, vivid and razor-sharp -- the picture is, in fact, far sharper than the Trinitron it replaced. Definitely a good buy overall, though.
