G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL

Pros: Memory runs great at the XMP settings in my Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H. No installation interference with my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Note that I had to update my motherboard BIOS (I'm running F7) before it would accept the XMP speed and timings. With original BIOS (F3), memory speed would always be set to 1333 MHz even after choosing XMP in the BIOS, saving changes, and rebooting.

Why PCI-e 2.1?

PowerColor Go! Green Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 CrossFireX Support Low Profile Graphics Card AX5450 1GBK3-SHEV4
PowerColor Go! Green Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 CrossFireX Support Low Profile Graphics Card AX5450 1GBK3-SHEV4

Pros: - Passive cooling - Good performance for the money (according to reviews) - Low power consumption

Cons: Why PCI-e 2.1??? Incompatible with most of the target market! This card will not work (no video output) on my Abit IP35-E board or my old nForce 4 board, both with PCI-e 1.0. It works fine in a Z77 board. Some other manufacturers have PCI-e 1.0 or 2.0 versions of this card, which makes much more sense. Unfortunately, most are PCI-e 2.1, so PowerColor is not alone here.

Overall Review: Who is in the market for this card? I suspect it's mostly people who want a backup card or something to throw in an older rig. If building a new rig that doesn't require good 3D performance, it makes much more sense in my opinion to use the GPU integrated on the CPU, or get a motherboard with integrated graphics chipset. That being said, why would PowerColor choose to use the PCI-e 2.1 interface for this card, which is incompatible with MANY motherboards based on the PCI-e 1.0 or 1.1 interface (we're just a few years removed from PCI-e 1.x)??? It is not common not knowledge that this incompatibility exists, so people like me buy the card and find that it doesn't work in their systems unless they are lucky enough to have a motherboard whose manufacturer has released BIOS update to enable compatibility. Very disappointed.

Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option
Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option

Pros: This case was a fantastic value with the promo code and free shipping. I have purchased 3 different budget mid-tower cases over the past 1-2 years, and I like this one the best. Build quality was decent on all of them, but I really like the bottom-mounted PSU design on this one, as well as the hard drive slots (and rail mounting system) that run perpendicular to the length of the case. The blue LED on the intake fan is a nice touch if you like that sort of thing.

Cons: The front intake fan and top exhaust fans have regular 4-pin female molex connectors rather than the small 3- or 4-pin connectors that can attach to motherboard fan headers. Unfortunately, the fan molex connectors do not fit well with the male molex connectors of my Corsair CX500v2 PSU. They refuse to snap together, so the connection is loose resulting in intermittent power to the fans. I think the female molex plugs on the case fans aren't designed well. A workaround would be to use adapters to attach the fans to the motherboard headers. I wish Rosewill would have included a pair of such adapters, because they're $5 apiece if I want to purchase some.

Overall Review: Overall a very good case for the money. The fit issue with the power plugs for the fans is very annoying to me though.

EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 512-P3-1301-KR
EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 512-P3-1301-KR

Pros: It's based on the PCI-e 2.0 spec, so it works with my Abit IP35-E (PCI-e 1.0)! Previously I had purchased a Radeon 5450 (PCI-e 2.1), but it was incompatible with 2 older motherboards with PCI-e 1.0. Turns out that some PCI 2.1 and 3.0 cards won't work in certain PCI-e 1.0 or 1.1 motherboards.

Cons: Performance isn't as good as the Radeon 5450 according to benchmarking / reviews, but at least it works in my old system!

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler, 4 CDC Heatpipes, 120mm PWM Fan, Aluminum Fins for AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1200/1151
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler, 4 CDC Heatpipes, 120mm PWM Fan, Aluminum Fins for AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1200/1151

Pros: - High-quality construction - Nice finish on base - Quiet operation (with PWM controller on mobo) - Fan easily removable from heatsink - Good value

Cons: - Standoffs can come loose easily when removing the cooler unless you really tighten down the nuts to the backplate during installation.

Overall Review: 1) Don't expect this cooler to keep your overclocked Ivy Bridge temps under 90C unless you get a good chip. I think a lot of the problem has to do with the interface between the cores and the IHS on the chip, so the heatpipe cooler can only do so much. 2) I wanted to reseat the heatsink. When backing out screws to remove mounting bracket, the included standoffs came loose from the backplate, so the whole standoff was turning instead of the screw. I had to use pliers to hold the standoff while backing out the screw, and then I had to take out my motherboard and reattach the nuts to hold the standoff firmly to the backplate. This was probably my fault for overtightening the mounting bracket, but my 3770K temps were so I high that I suspected poor contact.

OCZ Vertex 3 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTX3-25SAT3-120G
OCZ Vertex 3 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTX3-25SAT3-120G

Pros: Fast! Works flawlessly on my Z77 motherboard (SATA3, AHCI).

Cons: 1) There seemed to be a minor compatibility issue with this drive and my old Abit IP35-E motherboard resulting in occasional BSODs when going into sleep mode (no BSODs during normal use). Either that or the OS I imaged from my old Agility drive and copied onto the Vertex caused a problem. Anyhow, the drive works flawlessly on my new Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H board. 2) The screw holes on the included 3.5" adapter seem to be especially small in diameter, which prevented me from being able to install it in my Rocketfish full tower case (re-badged Lian Li) with the rubber grommet and screw sets that came with the case. I had to use a different adapter that I had previously purchased for my old Agility SSD.

Overall Review: I would definitely recommend this drive, but be cautious if you plan to use it with old chipsets.
