Luck of the Draw

TDK 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Discs Model 48521
TDK 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Discs Model 48521

Pros: I have purchased about 1000 of these over the past years all from newegg. In my first shipment of 300 I noticed 1 spindle had a clear plastic wrap over a cardboard sleeve with the TDK graphics on it, but the other 2 spindles had no cardboard sleeve but instead the graphics was printed tight on the plastic. Then in my latest shipment in November I noticed the number hooks for the cakebox cover had changed from 4 to 3. I also used a program called DVD identifier on the discs. The 3 hook version I just received is DAXON media and will actually burn at 16x on my NEC3550A, but the 4 hook version is CMC magnetics media and it will only burn at 12x max and it's not a great quality burn at 12x so I end up burning at 4x.

Cons: TDK has apparently used at least 3 different media supplier for these discs, and some are much better than others when you run the burn quality tests in Nero CD/DVD speed utility. So the biggest con to me is lack of consistency, you never know what you will really be getting, except that it has TDK's name on it.

Overall Review: Bad burns where the disc is unusable are rare, about 1%. I had burned several hundred discs with Nero's verifier feature turned on, and was thinking I should turn it off because they all burn good. Right as I was thinking that, I had a bad burn, and noticed the disc had scuffs on it that came from the factory. I didn't list this in the cons section because the percentage of bad disks is amazingly low so it's actually pretty good. I just wish the supply source was more consistent. The latest Daxon media seems to be good, I hope TDK can stick with that. I don't like the CMC magnetics media as well, it's not as good and is marginal.

Most Critical Review

Good for Labels, Bad for Markers

RiDATA 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model DRD+4716-RDCB100E
RiDATA 4.7GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model DRD+4716-RDCB100E

Pros: Excellent burn quality at 4x and 8x burn speeds per Nero CD-DVD quality test. Nice and shiny graphics is a pro if you like looking at shiny things and don't want to write on the disc with a sharpie. For this reason I only recommend these if you plan to use a label, and not if you use sharpies, see cons.

Cons: I won't be buying these again even though the burn quality was great, because the shiny graphics makes it too hard to read what is written on the disc with a sharpie permanent marker. The shiny surface isn't uniform, it's very contrasty and also has ridges on it, maybe good to help a label stick ( I didn't try one) but bad for writing on.

Overall Review: DVD Identifier identifies these as [DVD+R:RITEK-F16-001] Get these if you use labels, get something else if you want to write on the discs and be able to clearly read what you wrote.

Exvellent disc quality, but packaging needs work

Verbatim 4.7 GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model 95098
Verbatim 4.7 GB 16X DVD+R 100 Packs Spindle Disc Model 95098

Pros: Tested with Nero CD/DVD speed, and all the quality scores are 90% or better when burned at 4x or 8x, so these are some of the best discs I have tested. The light gray top surface is fairly uniform and marker writing shows up well on it. I will buy more of these (I already have).

Cons: The packaging is a cakebox which has 4 tabs on the bottom of the clear top that lock into the base. I ordered this spindle of 100 and 2 other brands, all packaged in the same box by Newegg, and the others arrived intact, but this one had 3 of the 4 tabs broken off when I received it. Stranger yet, the broken tabs were NOT inside the box anywhere, suggesting the tabs were already broken off when Newegg packaged it!! Newegg should investigate this.

Overall Review: These are some of the best DVDs I've ever tested and I've already bought more, though I use the cakeboxes so I really hope the tabs aren't broken off on my next shipment. DVD Identifier identifies these as: Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.] Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MCC-004-000] Now that the price is low we can all afford these, these are the discs you want. 5 stars, as long as the cakebox tabs aren't broken on my next shipment, I'm hoping that was just a fluke.

Great Product, Price and Service, even got E0 stepping!

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 - Core 2 Quad Yorkfield Quad-Core 2.83 GHz LGA 775 95W Desktop Processor - BX80569Q9550
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 - Core 2 Quad Yorkfield Quad-Core 2.83 GHz LGA 775 95W Desktop Processor - BX80569Q9550

Pros: A friend of mine got one of these a few months ago so I knew the performance was awesome. I entered my desired price in Newegg's "Price Alert" feature (great feature by the way, thanks Newegg!), and they sent me an alert last week that my price had been triggered, so I soon placed my order and got it for the price I wanted too! So as the title says, great product, price and service!

Cons: The only con I can think of, is that all the retail versions have this OEM fan included which is a throwaway item for me, I'd just as soon be able to buy a version without the fan with the price reduced accordingly. (I know there's an OEM version of the CPU with no fan, but the problem with that is the reduced warranty, I still want the full retail warranty). It just seems like when we are trying to help the environment by reducing waste, we end up with a wasteful pile of these silly OEM fans that so many people don't want, need, or use. What a waste, huh?

Overall Review: Pairing this up with a Thermaltake Big Typhoon CPU cooler. I would have bought that from Newegg also but for some reason they carry other Thermaltake products but not that one, too bad since it's been one of the top rated CPU coolers in laboratory tests. So, sorry Newegg, I had to buy that somewhere else, but I would have bought it from you if you had it. The CPU was ordered on 6/15 with free shipping, arrived on 6/16 (Great service!) and the product code is SLB8V, aka EO stepping, the good version of stepping for overclockers...YAY!

Excellent Monitor

SCEPTRE X24WG-1080P Black 24" 2ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 4000:1 w/ Built in Speakers & HDCP Support, US Warranty
SCEPTRE X24WG-1080P Black 24" 2ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 4000:1 w/ Built in Speakers & HDCP Support, US Warranty

Pros: -Excellent Display Quality. I bought one and it had no bad pixels but I needed 4 so I bought 3 more and they had no bad pixels also! -The VGA analog input synchronization is so good that when I switched from the analog to the digital cable, the improvement was barely noticeable -Product packaged very well, but not sure if it's well enough to be used as a shipping carton (which it was by Newegg). The high-gloss finish is covered with protective plastic so arrived without a scratch.

Cons: The auto-detect for input type (digital vs analog) USUALLY works, but usually isn't good enough for me. When I boot up I see the bios dosplayed, then a flicker while it re-synchronizes to the Windows XP logo while booting, then another flicker and sometimes I have a display for the login screen and sometimes I don't and it's completely black. When I don't, I turn the power off and then back on again, and the login screen appears. I would really like to see a 3 position switch for input, since the auto-detect isn't 100%. (Digital, analog, or auto). That way I could set it to analog and wouldn't have to worry about rebooting the monitor when the auto-sync misses. Besides, how useful is the auto signal detect anyway, how often will we change from digital to analog input sources? Since the monitor reboot is pretty quick and simple I decided to keep the monitor but it's just too annoying to give it 5 stars, otherwise it's great!

Overall Review: Newegg's service was excellent! Newegg used no external packaging to ship these monitors, and one arrived with a big hole in the box right in the middle of the screen area, so I was nervous it might be damaged until I opened the box to find whatever penetrated stopped just short of the display area. All the others arrived with no visible carton damage. The glossy finish can be a pro or a con. It looks great when you first get it (pro) but shows fingerprints and scratches easily (con) The small control buttons can be both a pro and a con. Once the monitors are setup, they are unobtrusive and the display looks great. However, they are a little difficult to use for the first time setup, but that's about the only time I use them. The small speakers can be a pro or a con. For me they are a pro because I wanted the smallest possible enclosure for the monitor and the small speakers permit that design (plus I don't plan to use the built-in speakers). But they sound as small as they lo

Reliable, quiet, and stable

ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT 500 W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT 500 W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: This power supply has been powering a core2duo system for over 1 year running 24/7, so reliability is great! This 500W unit also seems to have more power than some competitors 500W power supplies, look at the detail in the ratings. It's very quiet thanks in part to the large 120mm fan. I would definitely buy this again!

Cons: I agree with other reviewers who said the modular cables are difficult to insert into the connectors in the power supply. I was so frustrated with this I was tempted to give it 4 eggs instead of 5 but I finally managed to get them inserted and once I did it's been great. However I do think Enermax should address this issue if they haven't already. If you have positive pressure in your case this PSU is fine but for negative pressure systems like mine, a power supply that blows all its hot air out the back would be better. My case cooling blows hot air out the back. This creates a bit of a vacuum inside the case that is supposed to suck cool air in the front, but because there is a row of vents on the same side of the PSU where the modular connectors plug in, the same vacuum can also pull hot air from this power supply back into the case through these vents which is bad. Not all the hot air from the power supply is getting blown out the back of my case, only about 75% is.

Overall Review: Had previously owned the 400W version of this with great results, so bought the same type 500W version when I needed more power. However the next higher wattage model (620W) seems to have too many bad reviews so I don't think I would get that one. Thanks to Newegg for providing the valuable review service so we can know about these things!
