GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Solid product offering with plenty of flexibility.

Cons: After market cpu fan choice may be limited. Memory slots are close to the CPU. ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm fan covered the first memory slot. If you want to run the full 8G, check the fan dimensions before you buy.

One worked

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR10664GK
OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR10664GK

Pros: One worked.

Cons: One didn't. Couldn't get Vista 64 to install on a new build. Over a week of BSODs and BIOS tweak trial and error. Installed just fine on the one good stick.

Overall Review: Generally, the MB folks, the Memory folks and the OS folks need to come together on some sort of bootable RAID 0 tool that tells us mortals what to RMA. After reading the Gigabyte forum, the OCZ forum and the Vista stuff, it's easy to see why Dell is what it is.

1 good, 1 not so good

OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR800C44GK
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR800C44GK

Pros: One worked.

Cons: The other didn't. Spent way too much time (and headaches) de-bugging a new build and clean install of Vista 64. BSOD a lot and support folks went after BIOS settings as source of trouble.

Overall Review: After reading tons of Forum content, clearly, the motherboard folks and the memory folks are not thinking through the build process. And Vista's de-bug tool was worthless. A bootable tool that tells you what to RMA would be great.
