Most Favorable Review

Really reliable and works for what I bought it for.

SYBA SI-PEX40063 PCI-Express 2.0 x2 Low Profile Ready SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card
SYBA SI-PEX40063 PCI-Express 2.0 x2 Low Profile Ready SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: This card supports eSATA connections and you can connect a Port Multiplier (two actually) to this card. I would have to look back at the documentation to be sure but I think this card supports a maximum of 10 drives. I used it with two Rosewill RX305 4B hard drive, hot swap units. Each of the Rosewill units hods 4 drives and has a eSATA cable to connect to the SYBA card. This was a really reliable solution for me that I used with BSD Unix to make a server.

Cons: The card did everything I wanted it to do. I wouldn't say there was a con.

Overall Review: I used this card in Windows 7, Linux and BSD Unix. It is very well supported and does what it is supposed to do.

Most Critical Review

I am not a big fan of this item.

Verbatim Store 'n' Go Micro 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive 44051
Verbatim Store 'n' Go Micro 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive 44051

Pros: Small in size, large capacity.

Cons: I bought four of these to use as boot drives in my FreeNAS servers. After just a single year of use, one has completely failed and I am not sure I can rely on the rest of them. When you have the OS for your server on a USB drive, it needs to be reliable and I thought I could trust Verbatim.

Overall Review: I wouldn't recommend these for anything where they will actually get a lot of use...

This is almost server grade

Rosewill RX305 4B - SATA III-to-USB 3.0 & eSATA 4-Bay 2.5” or 3.5” Hard Drive Enclosure - Full Aluminum Case with Removable Fan, Supports Up to 20 TB Capacity (4 x 5 TB)
Rosewill RX305 4B - SATA III-to-USB 3.0 & eSATA 4-Bay 2.5” or 3.5” Hard Drive Enclosure - Full Aluminum Case with Removable Fan, Supports Up to 20 TB Capacity (4 x 5 TB)

Pros: I have been very impressed and happy with this unit. I bought it to connect additional storage to a BSD Unix server using the eSATA interface. I used a SYBA SI-PEX40063 PCI-Express card to make the connection and the whole thing has been very reliable and I am super happy with it. Using the SYBA card, BSD Unix can see each drive in the enclosure individually and pull all SMART data from the drives.

Cons: I don't have any complaints about how I have used this.. The only thing I did have problems with is when I tried to use it with the USB interface. The connection would randomly drop out on USB and that prevented me from using it in that way. Since I purchased it for use by eSATA, the USB problem was just a little inconvenience, but if you intend to use it by USB I am not sure you will be happy.

Overall Review: The build quality is solid and the fan is thermally controlled but stayed quiet except if the drives started to heat up under heavy, sustained transfers. Edit: I upgraded to larger drives from a different manufacturer and those drives put off significantly more heat. The cooling solution in this enclosure (an 80mm fan) was just not up to the task of keeping them cool. The temps got up to around 47 Celsius before I decided to step. I just set a small fan in front of the unit to blow cool air in and it did the trick. I still love it and use it to make backups of the data on my NAS.

It still works

Western Digital Blue WD2500AAJB 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Blue WD2500AAJB 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I bought this drive in 2009. It is now 2016. The drive still works. It was originally purchased as a replacement drive for a RAID enclosure that I had, but it wouldn't work. So, I used it to upgrade the boot drive in an old computer where the boot drive was failing. Now it is in an old external enclosure and only used occasionally.

Cons: It is pretty slow, but the drive is still faster than the USB 1.1 enclosure that it is in.

Overall Review: I wouldn't buy this today, but it is still useful, so I hate to throw it away.

They still work

Western Digital WD Green WD5000AADS 500GB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD5000AADS 500GB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I got two of these drives back in 2009 and they are still working.

Cons: They are not very fast.

Overall Review: These drives were originally used in a NAS, but now they are boot drives in systems where speed is not a priority. Nice, low power and reliable.

Weather housing...

Veho VCCA002WPC Underwater Case for Camcorder
Veho VCCA002WPC Underwater Case for Camcorder

Pros: It works.

Cons: It is bulky.

Overall Review: I still have the housing but the camera doesn't work any more

This is not the way

Not entirely about the iFixit tool kit, but relevant (in my view) as all items were ordered at the same time. The email from new egg asked me to rate my experience. The problem is, I bought several items at the same time as this iFixit kit. The kit is really not so bad. Not as good as I had hoped, but nice and alone I might give it four or even five eggs. My purchase experience is (to me) about all the items that I ordered at the same time as the tools. For example, I ordered hard drives, and tools, and some other parts. They all need to be present at the same time for the project to move forward. Then there is the payment. When I place an order, I expect a single charge from a single vendor, not several different charges from several different vendors, that I didn't deal with and didn't give my information to. I expect all the items to come together, in one box, or at the same time. It took more than two weeks to get some of the items. By the time they finally got here I had almost forgotten that I ordered them. I am not really happy with this purchase because I wanted it all at the time I ordered it. One order, one charge to my account, one shipment, all at once. Is that too much to ask for? I don't think so. It isn't like I will stop ordering from Newegg, but I will be much more selective about what I order.
