Awesome Card

3ware 8006-2LP PCI 64-bit SATA 2-port SATA RAID Controller - Kit
3ware 8006-2LP PCI 64-bit SATA 2-port SATA RAID Controller - Kit

Pros: Excellent - it just works. I use this card under Linux. I maintain the Pozix Linux distribution however, the Linux kernel has support built in if you grab kernels from kernel.org. FAST! Blazzing fast! I installed two Western Digital 500GB drives in a RAID-1 config. Performance exceeded expectations.

Cons: I had to download the command line tool (tw_cli) in order to view the RAID's health from within Linux. Not terribly difficult but it wasn't very clear where to get this source code.

Overall Review: People complaining about the card not working should check their PCI ports. This is a PCI 2.2 compliant card! Don't expect the card to work if you don't have correct PCI chip-set on your motherboard.

Junk, Buyer Beware

HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) RAID Controller Card
HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) RAID Controller Card

Pros: None!!!

Cons: This card is not a TRUE Hardware RAID Controller card. It's what is called a Software RAID card meaning that the RAID functionality is not handled by the card's electronics. The RAID functionality is handled in software. Those of you familiar with Win modems, same concept! I purchased this card based on vendor's advertisement being a Hardware RAID controller card which is misleading. Additionally, the Linux (opensource) driver is not truly opensource either. The driver code ships on a CD-ROM with pre-compiled object files that must be linked into the source code they do provide. These binary files are the Software RAID part and the source code to which is not provided. The software that is provided is simply enough code to link to the ACHI and PCI, under Linux, framework/library to provide an interface to the proprietary Software RAID functionality. This is really no different than standing up software RAID in whatever operating system you use....

Overall Review: Software RAID cards like this one are only good if you want to dual boot your computer between say Linux and Windows and see the same RAID set. Otherwise, you can just implement a RAID solution with a chaper SATA card and use your operating system's RAID capabilities which would be far better. Under Linux, the Linux RAID implementation had better performance. I eventually got this card to work under linux using the opensource community's SATA_MV driver. A slight modification to their driver is required to get this card to work under SATA_MV. Under SATA_MV, however, you do not see RAID arrays and only the individual disk drives connected to the card. Under Linux you can use dmraid AKA Fakeraid to coax this card into working too... I'm sending mine back. Total rip off. Go with 3Ware instead. NOTE: Software RAID cards also put more demand on your computer's CPU where as hardware RAID cards do not since the RAID functionality is truly off loaded by the card's electronics.

A bit of false advertising

WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN
WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: It's easy to setup except for NFS. NFS appears buggy. I read a lot of complaints that the unit was slow but when I looked further into those comments, the users were generally clueless. I observed no performance issues what so ever. The unit is quite and low powered. I went with this over a FreeNAS device to cut down on power usage.

Cons: I purchased this unit to backup some servers in our data center because it is advertised as having NFS. Here's what is stated in the product description: "ADVANCED SERVING OPTIONS Integrated file server, FTP server, backup server and P2P download server." After I got mine, NFS was there but it's buggy. I am trying to mount multiple NFS shares from a Linux server. Once you mount one share, the others become busy for some reason. I then noticed there is a firmware update but when you attempt the update, you get a big warning that NFS is removed and no longer supported. Seriously? NFS is one of the oldest protocols around. It predates CIFS (Windows shares), AFS (Apple), WebDAV, and DLNA. Why would you remove it and still call yourself a NAS device. I'm on the fence about returning it. Making my setup work means adding Samba to all my Linux servers which is not a simple thing for me; these are special purpose custom built Linux serves and unlike, for example, a Red Hat or Ubuntu distribution. Anyway, WD appears to be removing NFS probably because they can't figure out how to fix the NFS problems.

Good

SHARP CVP12LX 11,500 Cooling Capacity (BTU) Portable Air Conditioner
SHARP CVP12LX 11,500 Cooling Capacity (BTU) Portable Air Conditioner

Pros: Very Quite. I purchased my unit from Sams Club for around $480 as compared to the $589 price on newegg. I purchased this unit to cool my office which is an upstairs bedroom of my home that has trouble getting cool from the central air. This unit cools a 15x20 room even with 40+ year old drafty windows.

Cons: Blower not powerful enough. Even though the unit blows very cold air, it doesn't circulate as well as it should. However, on very hot days (95 F in Michigan) I put a pedestal fan at the opposite end of my office and point it down the upstairs hallway and this easy cools the upstairs of my home (5 bedrooms total). The window, as others stated, is a bit flimsy. These plastic pieces slide together to adapt to a horizontal or vertial window opening but they are just very flimsy. Foam tape comes with the unit to help create a seal but if you want to remove the unit in the winter time, you will have to buy more of the foam weather sealer for the next year.

Overall Review: Overall I'm happy. I'm a computer programmer so I sit at my desk all day with a TV on in the background and I can easily work or watch TV comfortably. The unit sites about 10FT from me and the 15x20 room easily gets cool. I also have a ceiling fan I can run to help circulate air. Another nicety is that on my unit the louvers can oscillate and you can adjust them with the remote. You can also manually adjust the left/right air flow while the louvers adjust up/down air flow. My unit also has an ION emitter but I don't notice much difference with it on. I once left the ION emitter on all day while I was out running around and came home and still didn't notice any difference in air quality like vs. being near the unit all day.

Junk

CISCO Catalyst WS-CE500-24TT Switch
CISCO Catalyst WS-CE500-24TT Switch

Pros: None

Cons: This is one of the worst Cisco products I have ever worked with. I purchased this switch because of the Cisco name and I needed a managed switch that could do port based VLANs. There is no CLI; only one very slow GUI. The GUI is brain dead. You can't set multiple options on a single web page. If you do, only one option takes. We learned this the hardway. Setting the duplex and the VLAN ID for a port caused the duplex setting to take and the VLAN ID to revert to default-1 thus loosing the port and the same port we remotely used to see the switch. The switch has a hard time with duplex auto negotiation. Connected to a Cisco 2610, we got tons of flapping with set speeds and the stupid switch would lock out its own port as a result. Way too many issues beyond this to list.

VoIP & Asterisk

PLANET VIP-153T Ethernet SIP IP Phone
PLANET VIP-153T Ethernet SIP IP Phone

Pros: Works great with Asterisk PBX! Supports CODEC G729

Cons: GUI is confusing Phonebook is just OK. Can't program some keys Can't put custom messages on LCD Speaker phone does not allow hands free operation as advertise -- there is no microphone in the phone for hands free communication. Speaker phone is only good for making calls where you navigate using touch tones.

Overall Review: Over all the phones work great. I purchased 4 of them and put 2 at a remote office. Sound quality is great and very customizable. You can set handset microphone volume (there is no speaker phone microphone), you can set the speaker volume both in ear piece as well as the speaker in speaker phone mode. You also have some ring tones to choose from but they are the basic type. Nothing fancy. Very easy to set up if you understand SIP. Some things are tricky like you have to set both the SIP proxy and domain to same IP address. (weird)
