Connects netbook to HDTV

Nippon Labs 12 ft. Premium 3.5mm Audio Stereo Speaker Cable M/M 12ft Model SPC-12MM 12 feet
Nippon Labs 12 ft. Premium 3.5mm Audio Stereo Speaker Cable M/M 12ft Model SPC-12MM 12 feet

Pros: Nice low cost. I bought a similar cable at a large discount store. That cable was 1/4 the length and cost 3 times as much. Running this cable from the headphone jack on my netbook to the audio aux in jack on my TV so I can watch shows from the internet on the TV.

Cons: Wasn't free.

Poor quality

XION HTPC Series XON-810PCB-RD icro ATX / Mini ITX Slim Desktop Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case w/ 450W Power Supply
XION HTPC Series XON-810PCB-RD icro ATX / Mini ITX Slim Desktop Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case w/ 450W Power Supply

Pros: Aesthetic design. Can stand up or be laid on its side.

Cons: Power supply fan in one case sounded like a lawn mower. Thought something got caught in the fan, but there wasn't. Maybe there was a bad bearing. One motherboard standoff on another case broke.

Overall Review: My office had 10 PCs built with this case. Two of them had problems, as mentioned in the Cons. Fortunately, the builder will replace the bad cases.

Touchy connector

COOLMAX HD-250TN-U3 Aluminum 2.5" Gray SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure
COOLMAX HD-250TN-U3 Aluminum 2.5" Gray SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure

Pros: Appearance - brushed aluminum, contrasting black stripe. Comes with a magnetic screwdriver and two extra screws. Case gets warm, so I guess it is doing a good job passing the heat. Uses the standard A type of USB connector on the case, not the micro USB 3.0 connector. Worked with Mac OS X Mountain Lion, despite no mention of OS X support in the specs.

Cons: You cannot move the enclosure at all while it is connected to your computer. The supplied cable seems to connect securely, but moving the enclosure caused the connection to be lost. I guess the cable isn't maintaining contact with the pins. While it is a nice thought, the supplied drawstring bag is kind of cheesy. I will be looking for a nicer case to hold the drive and cable.

Overall Review: Used with a 7200rpm 750GB WD Scorpio Black drive. Connected via USB 3.0 on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Once my new drive was formatted, it all worked with Time Machine and a 93GB backup was created in about 34 minutes. The hard drive activity LED on the case is blue, and the cable is only a few inches long.

WD10TPVT 1TB drive does not fit

KINGWIN ATK-25U3-BK Aluminum 2.5" Black SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure
KINGWIN ATK-25U3-BK Aluminum 2.5" Black SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure

Pros: USB3, aluminum case with nice finish, comes with cables and pouch.

Cons: Never got to use it. I knew 1TB 2.5" drives were larger than smaller capacity drives of that form factor. I had to check a bunch of enclosures and their specs to find one that could take a 1TB drive. Kingwin's site said this enclosure could take a 1TB drive. Well, the Western Digital WD10TPVT 1TB drive doesn't fit in this enclosure. Not even close.

Overall Review: 1TB 2.5" drives aren't going away. More companies need to come up with enclosures that fit these drives.

Good value

IOGEAR GUH287 3-Port USB 2.0 Hub and 45-in-1 Card Reader
IOGEAR GUH287 3-Port USB 2.0 Hub and 45-in-1 Card Reader

Pros: Reads many types of memory cards, has 3 USB ports on back. I have successfully read SDHC cards in this device, but haven't tried any other types yet. The USB ports work. I have used it to power a Blackberry charging cradle and charge a Bluetooth GPS receiver. Sufficient power is being delivered without having to use the extra USB connector on the supplied cable.

Cons: The SD slot is upside down. It's just a matter of aesthetics, but when a card is put into the slot, its label side is down.

Connects netbook to HDTV

AMC CSV-F10MM 10 ft. SVGA Male to Male Monitor Cable With dual ferrites
AMC CSV-F10MM 10 ft. SVGA Male to Male Monitor Cable With dual ferrites

Pros: Being used to connect my netbook to my TV to watch some shows online. The connectors have all 15 pins. Video quality on the TV was as good as cable. Couldn't tell I was watching video being streamed over WiFi and being sent through my netbook and the VGA cable. Cost only a fraction of what the local brick and mortar stores wanted for a VGA cable.

Cons: Wasn't free.
