Great Voices

Polk Audio CS1 Black Center Channel Loudspeaker Single
Polk Audio CS1 Black Center Channel Loudspeaker Single

Pros: Okay, bought this center speaker the same day I bought the Monitor 50 series Polk floor-standing speakers! Let me just say, "nice"! I bought this speaker to replace my center satellite speaker which was on its last legs! The sounds I hear from this speaker is truly remarkable. The clarity and range of the voices I hear during talking scenes in my movies and games is really great. This speaker has great bass response when the occasion arises and it doesn't disappoint on its mids or highs either. It truly is a great buy if you want a decent speaker.

Cons: Yes, I do have something to say but it's not really a con but a buyer beware. Anyone that thinks about purchasing this speaker, please take into consideration its size! Objects are larger than they appear and as such, should be researched so as to enable the person to make the accommodations necessary to make room for this speaker.

Overall Review: As always, Newegg came through with flying colors and sooner than I anticipated! Keep up the service Newegg!

Excellent As One, Murderous As Two

XFX Radeon R9 290X 8GB DDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Double Dissipation Edition R9-290X-8DFD
XFX Radeon R9 290X 8GB DDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Double Dissipation Edition R9-290X-8DFD

Pros: I'll just say this. Upgrading from two Radeon HD 5870s in Crossfire X has been a long time coming. I had those two cards for the better part of five years so you all can expect, they were showing their age. I spent more than three months researching their replacements and finally laid eyes on these cards. Let's get one thing clear. I DID NOT SETTLE for these cards. They had everything I wanted to be eligible for purchase by me and XFX won out amongst the other competitors by providing two crucial things. A spectacular warranty policy and credibility to match. These cards are built tough with a minimalistic style that I crave in electronics and they come with a build quality I think is sorely lacking in general in the electronics and computer industry. Furthermore, the performance increases I've seen with all my applications, from games to GPU intensive productivity software exceeds what I was HOPING to achieve. XFX has lived up to its reputation of providing excellent hardware and a warranty policy that to me, gives it the credibility it deserves. I know that my investment is safe for the foreseeable future and I can expect that i will have upgraded again before the warranty runs out.

Cons: This review wouldn't be objective if I didn't list the negative aspects of this investment. I have to say, I'm rather uncomfortable with the level of heat these cards generate. I definitely feel the increase in the room temperature caused by the heat generated and since I live in the tropical southeast of the U.S., these cards certainly don't make the already stifling heat and humidity issue any better. This leads me to my second issue; noise. When these cards get hot, the fans kick into high spin, This does put a damper on my gaming sessions, especially with GTAV and surprisingly, Civilization V. I think that XFX could have opted for more silent fans in this regard. There are options out there that could easily fix the fan noise issue. But alas. These are minor issues and for the most part, I expected these issues. Still, this isn't to give XFX a free ride and I expect XFX to continue to advance and explore ways to help reduce heat in its cards. I still expect progress to be made on this front.

Overall Review: To all prospective buyers and those who read and write reviews. Little things like driver support do not fall on the manufacturer of the graphics card to be responsible for. The processors used in the cards are made by AMD and thus, the responsibility of driver support falls on AMD and AMD alone. Lowering a review score based on this issue does not grant the manufacturer of said card justice. So those buyers who are on the fence, please take note of this fact and try to base your decision on more tangible information such as build quality, size of the card, warranty policies and manufacturer credibility. These are the only metrics by which you should base your decision.

An Almost Perfect Solution

EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 120-G2-1300-XR 80+ GOLD 1300W Fully Modular Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 120-G2-1300-XR 80+ GOLD 1300W Fully Modular Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply

Pros: Let me just say, I am pleasantly surprised by EVGA. This SuperNOVA power supply has been the first EVGA product I've bought in almost a decade and the first ever power supply by them I've ever bought. I am pleasantly surprised by the professionalism EVGA has expressed in this product. Everything from the aesthetics of the packaging and the unit, to the attention to detail with providing a nifty case for the unit and cables to the overall build quality has been exactly what I've been looking for. EVGA has done itself proud with this product and has set a new standard for which I will look for from whichever company seeks my money in the future. With this said, there are a couple finer points I want to delve into. Being that this is the FIRST fully modular power supply I've EVER owned, I don't see how I ever got by without before. This made my installation of the unit, other components and the cabling much easier and it didn't feel like I had to handle the unit. This made for a much more hassle-free experience and when it comes to computer builds, anything that helps in this regard is more than welcome. The second finer point I want to delve into is with regards to the VGA cabling and their associated slots on the unit itself. It should be quite obvious why EVGA did what it did and it had nothing to do with any cool factor, color schemes or anything with regards to cosmetics. By choosing red as the color for the VGA cabling and their respective slots on the unit, EVGA was covering its hide. The reason for this is because quite contrary to many peoples' egos, most people just aren't as smart or tech savvy as they believe themselves to be and at the end of the day, a corporation will do what it can to mitigate the derp moments people have that can lead to the death of a product. So while many people will whine about color schemes and design choices, they have to take into account that not everyone is smart enough to inform themselves before acting and a corporation will do what it takes to mitigate peoples' actions if only to lessen the chance of being liable for something they can't control.

Cons: Now, while I did say a lot about the pros of this power supply, it would not be a balanced review if I didn't mention at least one con. After all there will always be one thing that can be "improved" upon and this power supply is no different. The one and only con I can think of is the length of the main motherboard cable. It was a bit on the short side. Now I know that the size of a case definitely plays a role in how much play someone has with their cabling. This is the reason why I didn't knock off any points. I have a super tower case where things a bit more spaced out. I cannot blame the company that makes power supplies for cables that are too short if the case I buy is just too big for the length of cables. After all, I made the choice of which case to buy and so, the responsibility of remedying the issue should fall on me. This isn't a con so to speak but more of a heads up. If you have a super tower case, take heed that some cables from this power supply may or may not be a bit short. As it stands, the responsibility of having longer cables should that are longer than industry standard should fall on the consumer, not the producer.

Overall Review: I highly recommend this power supply to anyone who is looking for an all-round rock solid unit. EVGA is a decent corporation to buy power supplies from and I am now looking at them to see what other solutions they have for their other products.

Professionalism Works

Cooler Master COSMOS S RC-1100-KKN1-GP Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Cooler Master COSMOS S RC-1100-KKN1-GP Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: First and foremost. This computer case is BY FAR, the best computer case I've ever owned. Everything from the sleek sports car design, to the placement of the external expansion ports and power button to the internal layout for the various components is well thought out. I have purchased and used a few cases in my time but this, this case trumps them all. The solid engineering and craftsmanship is what I've come to love and expect from Cooler Master. They seem to always be on the cutting edge in case design. One thing is for sure and it is a major driver in my decision to purchase this case above all others and that is its sheer size. At over 2' in depth, this case allows for the gargantuan graphics cards of today, plenty of room for cable management. Don't even get me started on cable management because I could write an essay on how important I view cable management. Simply put, This case is engineered very well and is gorgeous to boot. I have not regretted it at all.

Cons: This is not really a con but it is more of a food for thought issue. Besides, if I don't post something that could be deemed negative by others, I run the risk of being biased or being construed as such. So here goes. I would have loved to have seen a motherboard tray that was removable. This isn't such a big deal to me but I have rather large hands and wussy ones at that and my hands can be cut quite easily. There are some edges inside the case that feel a little too sharp for comfort and when I went to place the CPU heat sink on the CPU, I felt that my knuckles scraping the I/O port and the metal support beam that runs across the upper part of the case were well.. too abrasive and sharp. But in all honesty though, my hands are too soft so this isn't something that I felt that needed a drop off in the scoring. If you have tougher hands, it's no issue but if you have soft skin like me, then it is best that you wear some light gloves to help you out when placing components inside

Overall Review: Like I said above. This case is very solidly engineered. I especially LOVE the touch sensitive power button on top of the case, the placement of the power supply port, motherboard tray, extensive options for fans and expansion bays, ports and housings, Thumb screws were a major plus as well as the screw-less drive bays for my optical drive. Some inside edges were a tad sharp or abrasive but this is mainly a non-issue as this isn't applicable for everyone.

Better For Surround

Polk Audio Monitor 50 Black Two-way Floorstanding Loudspeaker Single
Polk Audio Monitor 50 Black Two-way Floorstanding Loudspeaker Single

Pros: Okay! I have had these speakers for less than a week but more than a day! I actually bought two so as not to be mismatched and to take advantage of the sale. I will just say, the design of these speakers coupled with the engineering is superb! I get quite noticeable responses on the majority of the sound spectrum from the bass to the mid level and high level sounds. I bought these mainly to start out a new home theater build and they do not disappoint. I am able to hear things I've never heard before on my Blu-ray movies and PS3 games! The clarity in the music I listen to is substantially higher with these speakers as opposed to the satellites I had previously. Polk Audio is a brand to be trusted! I've always heard good things and after purchasing these speakers, the good reputation they have is well deserved!

Cons: This isn't really a con so much as a buyer beware for the people who are decently serious about their home theater builds. What I mean, is that, these speakers while excellent aren't really all that suitable to being placed at the front. They are more suited to being placed as surround speakers! I will give three reasons! 1. The amount of wattage these speakers can take is not as much as what primary front speakers need to put out. 2. The frequency range isn't as great as what you'd need to hear the sound effects put off by movies especially if they're on Blu-ray or HD-DVD! What this means is that the bass put off by these speakers, while noticeable and there, is more subtle and elegant! 3. The dual binding posts are completely unnecessary! These speakers can't handle the wattage to make hook-ups to amps or bi-amps justifiable! You're more likely to blow them if you try to take advantage of their bi-amp capability!

Overall Review: Well, all in all, these speakers are excellent! They deserve the rating I gave them but perhaps, they should be marketed more towards surrounds and perhaps removing the bi-amp capability would be better so people who are less knowledgeable don't screw up from thinking that more hook-ups means better sound! As for Newegg? The service was great! I received these speakers earlier than I anticipated and thus was able to hook them up and experience them sooner! Keep up the service!
