Easy way to add drives to an old computer

Koutech IO-PSA420 32-bit PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card
Koutech IO-PSA420 32-bit PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Finally an easy solution to adding a 750+ gig drive to my A7N8XE Deluxe motherboard. The on-board 3112a Sata raid chip-set locks at the raid screen during when I attach any drive over 500gig. My 750 gig drives would only work if I plugged them in after boot. So I bought this card stuck it in the PCI slot and it and both drives are instantly recognized and windows boots just fine problem solved. Easy format of drive under disk management and I was good to go. Now I have a cheap and easy 1.5 gig video file server with room to add two more drives. Very easy install with driver disk included. I didn't use raid so I can't speak about that.

Cons: Could have been cheaper

Overall Review: You don't need super fast equipment to run an HTPC file server and this card put new life into my old A7N8XE motherboard by allowing me to plug in up to 4 huge storage drives. Other cards were cheaper but some had the old 3112 chip-set which would give me the same problem and most didn't have 4 Sata slots. So I guess you get what you pay for and this card was super easy to install and did exactly what I expected

Not Compatable With A7N8X E Deluxe

Crucial 1GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model CT12864Z40B
Crucial 1GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model CT12864Z40B

Pros: They used to supply fantastic ram.

Cons: Newegg should pull this from the compatibility list with the Asus A7n8xe deluxe boards. I purchased 3 gigs as that is the max the motherboard would allow. Of the 3 gigs one was bad and failed memtest 86 so I sent it back RMA. It cost me Ten bucks shipping (So now I'm out more money for these). At 400 FSB (Bios setting 200) with the two good sticks I still had intermittent crashes. The only way to make them stable was to decrease the FSB to 333 (Bios setting 166). I finally got back the RMA stick and one of the other sticks went bad and locks up in the windows memtest tool even running at slow 333 FSB. So now do I RMA the second bad stick and spend another Ten bucks due to crucial sending out bad ram? Problem being with the crucial RMA process they have to get them 10 days from the notice they send you (no slow shipping). If I put the bad stick in my mouse cursor turns into a big white square and the system boots to windows but is a little unstable (intermittent crashes).

Overall Review: What happened to Crucial. I used to purchase all my ram from then and never had a problem. I would say the RMA process is not exactly easy or even something I want to do especially with the 10 day deadline. I have done other companies RMA processes and they were much easier. I used to think Crucial ram was so good that instead of going straight to the new ram as an issue, I tried another power supply and even another motherboard before I realized that the ram was junk. Two bad sticks out of 3 and that costs me Twenty bucks shipping. For that price I could have purchased gaming ram. Save money and find a better quality supplier.

Probably the only bad review

AMD Athlon II X3 445 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.1 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX445WFGMBOX
AMD Athlon II X3 445 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.1 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX445WFGMBOX

Pros: Processor works great but haven't tried to unlock the other core. AMD did RMA the fan.

Cons: Sent with a defective fan. Brand new Gigabyte motherboard with new ram and a new processor wouldn't post. I am switching out ram, drives, boards, finally after exhaustive frustration found out the fan was bad. Luckily I had lots of parts to use to test. Switched fans and everything works great. I was even about to order another power supply when I found the fan was the real problem. Why ship such a good processor with a defective fan? Newegg will only do full RMA had to contact AMD for fan replacement. If I would have known I would have ordered OEM.

Overall Review: Warning to other system builders if your new board wont post it could be a bad lot of AMD fans.

NIce for the price

AMD Athlon X2 4850e - Athlon X2 Dual-Core 2.5 GHz Socket AM2 45W Processor - ADH4850DOBOX

Pros: It has been very stable and handles everything I throw at it. It is a huge step up from my old XP 3000 socket A. The fan suppled is an easy install. No problems with high def video. Cuts DVD to HD way faster than the old XP 3000.

Cons: None so far

Nice Power Supply

BFG Tech GS-550 550 W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.8 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Stable and relatively quiet power supply. I really like the wrapped cables. Built a system with a Gigabyte GA-MA 78G-DS3HP and an AM2 X2 4850e and it has been very stable. I liked it so much I purchased a second one for another build. Price is great for BFG quality.

Cons: None so far

Easiest Install Ever

GIGABYTE GA-MA78G-DS3HP AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: I am a big fan of ASUS motherboards and have 3 of them on my home computers. I was looking for a full ATX MB with decent onboard video. Due to some bad reviews of the ASUS MBs that would fit my needs I decided to give Gigabyte a try. I could not be happier. This was the easiest build ever. The board is blazing fast and full of features. The bios pretty much sets itself as all I really had to change was the time setting. I used an old copy of XP home and the Gigabyte disc supplied all the drivers I needed to get up and running in no time. I use the on-board video for playing high def videos and it does a fantastic job. This thing rocks.

Cons: None so far

Overall Review: I think I found a new favorite company for all of my future motherboards.
