2nd Case Experience

MSI MBOX K9N6SGM-V AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 /nForce 405 chipset Barebone
MSI MBOX K9N6SGM-V AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 /nForce 405 chipset Barebone

Pros: This is the second case I've purchased for a cheap build & the second review I'm doing. Cheap, Cheap, Cheap! Overall it is a capable case for very little money.

Cons: Well, the driver CD worked fine in this one (read my previous review), but this time around the integrated ethernet died on me after about 2 hours of use. It constantly flips quickly between cable unplugged and acquiring and address. I tried re-installing the drivers and even downloaded some more compatible drivers for the Nforce chipset and none worked. In a last ditch effort before I contacted Newegg I even wiped the computer and started fresh. The very instant I installed the chipset drivers it start flipping back and forth again. This is all on a known good connection & cable. I noticed the person below me also says they are unable to connect directly to their cable modem (make sure you're powering the modem OFF and back on after connecting it to the desktop).

Overall Review: There's always the risk of defects! Especially in lower-priced items... Newegg offered me a $25 credit to buy a PCI NIC if I wanted. Considering that a decent NIC costs $4.99 on here... SURE! So, I'm not returning it... I just hope other components don't fry! :-D

Most Critical Review

Tiny, slow and fragile...

PQI Intelligent Drive i810 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model BF07-2032R0131

Pros: Absolutely minuscule. I loved being able to keep it on my key chain without bulking up my pocket. Great storage space for the size of the drive. Read speeds seem pretty good.

Cons: Slow write speeds (as everyone says) and fragile...... Mine is now ruined for pocket duty because the ridiculously small tabs that keep the contact end extended sheered off. As a result the piece now slides in and out freely. The offending USB port is only slightly tight (I've inserted several standard type USB drives) and it did not take much force at all to do this. So just a word of caution to all who buy it... It is a great drive, but be very cautious when inserting it into strange USB ports from around the block.

Overall Review: Dang it!

Great buy!!

MSI MBOX K9N6SGM-V AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 /nForce 405 chipset Barebone

Pros: An excellent buy for a cheap build. I built one for a friend last month for $300 with moderate hardware specs. Seems to be very quick and stable. Power supply seems very robust in this price range. Many barebones costing $50 more than this only come with 300/350 watt supplies.

Cons: Somewhat limited upgradability... 2 RAM slots, only 2 SATA, 1 IDE channel, etc. It kind of forces you to pick and choose if you're going to have multiple cd-roms/HDs. That doesn't matter in this price range though IMO. The driver cd included would not work for me... I'm not sure if it is just a bum disc or that it wouldn't get along with the Samsung DVD-RW drive I put in. When I put it in the drive it would just sit there and spin up/down indefinitely. The drive worked perfect with every other program I installed from cd (many). This forced me to download the drivers online, but MSI actually has an applet on their website that identifies the correct drivers for it. So besides the slow D/L speed from Taiwan it was relatively painless! Thinking back there might've been a better mirror... oh well, I was half asleep! :-) The case is a little flimsy, but again I'm just nitpicking. For $90 this thing can ABSOLUTELY not be beat.

Overall Review: Nahhhhhhhh!

Buy it!

HP Deskjet 6980 Up to 36 ppm Black Print Speed Up to 4800 optimized dpi color and 1200 input dpi Color Print Quality InkJet Workgroup Color Printer

Pros: It's Newegg and an excellent HP printer... so stop reading the reviews and buy it. Don't listen to anyone who complains about setting it up for wireless because they don't have a clue. I set it up both over wireless and cabled to my wireless router in 10 minutes. I think I'll leave it cabled simply for the sake of speed. Print quality is excellent and it's fast too.

Cons: Doesn't type up my documents too? Piece-o-junk!

Overall Review: Buy it!
