The best value in budget SSDs

Team Group Ultra L5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) T253L5120GMC101
Team Group Ultra L5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) T253L5120GMC101

Pros: Performance is on par with other budget 120GB SSDs, but typical new part price is significantly lower. We have not experienced a failure of any of these SSDs we've purchased and installed. If you're worried about buying a cheap SSD that's not from Crucial, Kingston, Intel, or Samsung, here's a little info. What most people don't understand is that all these SSDs sold by newer and lesser known brands (Team, Apotop, Mushkin, etc.) are 99% the same hardware as more expensive SSDs with the same underlying controller. Manufacturers take the "reference design" for any given controller chip and design their parts to match that design exactly, then send the design off to a third-party factory for the actual fabrication. The only difference between this drive and other budget 120GB drives would be what company name is on it and what the market price is.

Cons: There aren't really any bad things I can say about this product. It's a "budget" SSD and not a "performance" SSD, so of course the performance could be higher, but then the cost would be much higher than it would be worth. They're two totally different markets and most workloads don't need the extra performance anyway.

Overall Review: Our computer shop gave about five of these a shot since they were the first brand new 120GB SSDs to drop below the $40 mark and Team has always been a reliable brand despite being a relative newcomer to the market. They are the best value in budget SSDs and that's what we want to pass on to our customers.

Most Critical Review

The good ones are amazing; the bad ones are mediocre

Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G
Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: If you get the V300 with the flash memory they used from the start, the speed is ridiculously great. Until fairly recently, these SSDs were my strong preference for their wonderful speed. See the "cons" before buying, though.

Cons: At some point, Kingston changed the flash memory used in some of the V300 units. The new flash memory performance is nearly 1/2 that of the original flash memory. When they changed this, they did NOT change the model number at all, so you have no clue whether or not you'll get the fast kind or the slow kind. If you complain, Kingston tells you to run the useless ATTO benchmark to confirm the speed, but they won't own up to the underlying problem.

Overall Review: I used to love these drives. I've got one of the good ones in the laptop I'm writing this review with. It's amazingly fast, even after 661 GB of host writes to the SSD, and I would have recommended this drive with enthusiasm before they switched the flash technology without notice. If you get this drive, perform a sequential read speed benchmark. If the result is not in the 500+ MB/sec range, you have a unit with the slow flash and should promptly return it. Better yet, buy a different drive.

Worked fine for a year, but HP warranty service is hot garbage

HP EX920 M.2 1TB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2YY47AA#ABC
HP EX920 M.2 1TB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2YY47AA#ABC

Pros: It was fast and worked fine for a year before block failure set in

Cons: Failed after a year, which is not a huge deal, except that HP's support "doesn't recognize the serial number" and HP completely stonewalls all ability to contact a human at HP for help without a recognized serial number. The 5 year warranty is useless because HP won't recognize its own serial numbers and honor the warranty.

Overall Review: Warranty return support is useless. DO NOT BUY unless you're okay with the 5 year warranty from HP being a lie.

Can be flaky, but USB 3.0 seems to help stability

NETIS WF2123 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates
NETIS WF2123 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: This adapter usually works. When it does, it doesn't do a bad job. Paired with a good Wireless-AC router, it will routinely pull enough bandwidth to sustain several MB/sec of data transfer.

Cons: This adapter will fail but remain "connected." I have two of these on two different computers in two different locations with the same problem. Sometimes it can be fixed by disabling and enabling in Device Manager. Sometimes unplugging it and plugging it back in will fix it. Ironically, I've had the most luck with it plugged into a motherboard USB 3.0 port, so I wonder if it's a power consumption issue since USB 2.0 has far less amperage available. Note that I'm using the latest RTL8192EU drivers from Netis (2016-10-26) so it's supposedly not a driver issue.

Overall Review: You will probably have better luck with a more expensive and up-to-date (Wireless-AC) USB 3.0 adapter. If you get this, I'd recommend trying it in a USB 3.0 port if it exhibits inconsistent behavior.

Slow even with fast HDD, constantly needs USB reset

ORICO Tool Free 2.5 inch USB 3.0 SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5" SATA HDD and SSD Support UASP and 6TB Drive Max -Black

Pros: It is a functional enclosure with a generous cable length. That's the only good thing about it.

Cons: This thing transfers sloooooooooooow despite having a brand new 7200 RPM 1TB drive installed and constantly requires resetting by the OS. This is what my Linux kernel log looks like, and every time one of these triggers there's a long delay as the command times out and the device is soft-reset by the OS: [2859501.579439] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdf] tag#0 data cmplt err -71 uas-tag 1 inflight: CMD [2859501.579445] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdf] tag#0 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 59 ef fd 00 00 01 00 00 [2859532.029982] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdf] tag#0 uas_eh_abort_handler 0 uas-tag 1 inflight: CMD [2859532.029989] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdf] tag#0 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 59 ef fd 00 00 01 00 00 [2859532.030123] scsi host10: uas_eh_bus_reset_handler start [2859532.138294] usb 9-1: reset SuperSpeed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd [2859532.155728] scsi host10: uas_eh_bus_reset_handler success

Overall Review: Unfortunately, I would not buy this product again. It is easy enough to assemble but the only good thing about it is that it's better than nothing at all. The performance and reset problems are inexcusable.

The cost is SO worth it for this level of quality

Case Logic CDW-320 CD Wallet Nylon Black Hold Up To 336 CDs
Case Logic CDW-320 CD Wallet Nylon Black Hold Up To 336 CDs

Pros: Bigger wallets exist for the same price, but their reviews all indicate quality issues. This wallet is the real deal: it's built like a tank and serious thought was clearly put into almost every aspect of the design. There are no metal snap rings to bend open and shred the pages. The page cloth is a finer, softer material than cheaper cases seem to use, perfect for reducing disc surface wear during transportation. There is no extra "retaining strip" of plastic at the top of each slot to potentially pop behind the disc and destroy the surface (I lost a lot of data because of such lips of plastic!) It's built very well and I don't have to worry about anything on it breaking. The capacity is reasonable for the size.

Cons: The zipper on large CD wallets is always a major annoyance and this is no exception. When the wallet is fully opened, the zipper ends up pulled in towards the binding end and is a bit annoying to get back out and zip it back up. I have never seen a single large CD wallet that didn't have this problem; it's just a consequence you have to live with if you want this kind of capacity.

Overall Review: I hate buying big CD wallets. I have bought many of them in the past and had a variety of quality and design issues. I transferred my CD-R and DVD-R data stockpiles to BD-R and about 19 of the source discs were damaged due to problems with poor design and usage of the existing wallets. The one Case Logic wallet I bought a long time ago never let me down and reviews here were positive. The 520-disc wallets have crummy metal rings that bend apart and the pages are flimsy, while the cheaper wallets in a similar capacity to this one have similar issues, plus a lot of wallets have that pesky plastic lip above the disc slots that WILL DESTROY your discs. This wallet suffers from none of these problems and I am very impressed. I feel like I truly received a lot more value for each dollar. I have no regrets and will definitely buy another in the future.

Just as good as buying from Newegg directly

I received the same excellent shipping service and item quality that I expect from Newegg, so I would buy from this seller again.
