Cheap Hackintosh

GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I have built 4 hackintosh boxes with this board. Absolutely wonderful! Sleep works perfectly. ALC883 audio is the only thing not completely compatible out of the box with OSX Leopard. And very easy to find kexts / EFI strings (drivers) for. Have fun!

Cons: Max 4GB memory and 1 PCIe Video slot - not cons at this price.

Overall Review: With the right wireless adapter and a 9500GT video card you have a fully working mac. Apple Video Card Rebranding names: G100 = 9400 GT GT120 = 9500 GT GT130 = 9600 GSO = 8800 GS D-Link DWA-542 works out of box for airport extreme. (PCI) Almost any firewire card will work for time machine. Get a PCIe 1x firewire card and good to go. SYBA CL-CAM63003 is a good working low light USB Cam out of box. I dont use bluetooth, but many USB dongles work, same with IR sensor if needed. Check the OSX HCL wiki lists for more info. (check out OSX86 tools too!)

Western Digital Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: good warranty

Cons: Needs warrantee. RMAs suck. Past Newegg's 30 day policy.

Overall Review: First WD I have ever had fail. Just proves all HDs fail. Since the 'blue' model has less moving parts I went to it for immediate replacement.

Works great

Sony WiFi Ready Blu-ray Player BDP-S370

Pros: slim with lots of extra features.

Cons: none so far.

Overall Review: Would recommend if < $100

Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive ST320005FDA2E1-RK
Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive ST320005FDA2E1-RK

Pros: May be good for a paperweight or monitor shim... Although, I even think the HD case is awkward and ugly...

Cons: This is the second Seagate hard drive I have bought that refuses to communicate properly with an airport extreme USB airdrive setup. The last 1.5TB Seagate that wouldn't work went into my iMac.. not sure what to do with this yet...

Overall Review: I feel the SAMBA server is much more secure then any external HD security software. The argument for built in security may be more for physical theft though, so take it as you will. I highly recommend WD elements for the Airport Extreme USB network. [ Not the newer WD's with built in hardware / firmware security ]

not bad for cheap

Rosewill R220-P-BK Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Rosewill R220-P-BK Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: I really like the 'split' mobo tray - allows one to change CPU coolers that are scre-w-ed down (which I prefer over the stock intel coolers push pins) - just take off the back panel and full access. I also like the AC97 / HD front panel audio connector...

Cons: Sharp edges, gaps between front face plate and sides (light comes through from front panel LEDs) Expansion slot locking plate allows cards to 'rattle' I modified it by drilling some holes through it so I could screw down the video card securely...

Overall Review: For 25 clams Grog is happy.

great iHac board

GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I bought this board to build a development box with OSX. Running VMware Fusion 3 is awesome! Win7 and ubuntu VM's for code testing... Runs OSX out of box. Just needs voodooHDA.kext coupled with Chameleon RC2+

Cons: Northbridge runs hot when using a high bandwidth video card or overclocking - had to add a fan. But the heatsink was re-designed from the G31M-ES2L and doesn't cool as well with a fan addition... not huge, but note worthy

Overall Review: Most people won't be using a 9800GTX+ card - For this card to work in OSX86, need custom EFI string... This board supports 2 x 4GB sticks vs. the 2 x 2GB on the G31M-ES2L - 4GB memory sticks aren't cheap but nice to have the option. I overclocked a e8400 to 3.6GHz N.P. (on Zalman 9500 air cooler)
