WRT54GL Pleasing

Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)
Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router up to 54 Mbps/ Compatible with Open Source DD-WRT (not pre-load)

Pros: Purchased to replace older wired Linksys unit and its performance is faster + I now have access point for wireless. There have been no resets. The router setup was easy however I read about it prior to buying. I utilized WPA security, created my security net password, name for SSID, and changed the ADMIN/Password---- and it worked well. I needed no other changes . I did not care about N capability. port forwarding etc. I wanted Nat firewall, WPA security, and stock firmware. I wanted simple, trustworthy operation and I got it.

Cons: Not sure if con but laptop had trouble hooking up when continual broadcast was later disabled. There are valid arguements both for and against this disable.

Overall Review: Web review would seem to suggest that laptop WIFI chipset can be a weak point dependent on the OEM. Some kids just don't play together well.

Strange Behavior

MSI K9N SLI Platinum AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI K9N SLI Platinum AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: The options are considerable for the price. Installed stock Amd 4200 x2 with more than enough room. Layout was atx and reasonable. Board/bios recognized presence of Sata drive F6 option during install was not necessary for non-raid function.

Cons: This board is not for novice as install of xp pro and bios setup ran into immediate issues with two onboard ethernet ports. Both ports refused driver install with flag notation of " inadequate resources" normally meaning IRQ or memory allocation. One instance dealt with alleged confict with floppy drive resources??? This changed to another when second install of windows/motherboard drivers. Tried disabling other onboard items to free up resources but finally purchased 3rd party NIC card as too much time being consumed to solve conflict. Flashed BIOS to 1.3 and installed updated drivers. Utility program Digicell / liveupdate usage met with MSI site issue- update was not seen by Digicell program after upgrade. Driver install good but bios flash reported as corrupt. Recovery to 1.2 also failed. Manual flash using WIN98 startup disk and manual site download of flash utility etc worked well.

Overall Review: I have never met with as many issues as this board offered. The NIC ports were reported by others and I expected some problems with drivers- but not this. Situation aggravated by less than adequate manual received concerning Nic ports and even memory placement for dual chan activation. Minor issues resolved due to internet posting but needed 2nd computer as install internet not available. Once set up the board is running fine with kingston memory but not overclocking. Would RMA board for NIC/bios issue but family member awaiting same. Like dummy I removed box usb label as the rebate deadline was upon me. Newegg would have received the board back due to bios resource issue. Experience with manual, board issues, MSI site difficulty left me cold. Never experienced same with other top tiered products.

Excellant router

LINKSYS BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports
LINKSYS BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports

Pros: Router was easy to set up and I wanted the NAT option. It was purchased for the price. My ideal home router would have been 150$. This allows me to utiliZe a WAP connected to a lan port on the wired router and place the WAP elsewhere in the house.

Cons: I do not like the CD install nor did I use it. It would be great if Cisco/linksys supplied a support site which explained all the options and when to enable or disable them. Newbies are forced to google each option or involve linksys directly.

Overall Review: Old wired router Linksys BEFSR41 served without fault for better than 5 years. TS showed it was router that was intermittent and dropping internet connection. Replacement did not give higher speed ( certainly not expected) but does lack the uplink port

ANTEC MX-100

Antec MX-100 Aluminum 3.5" Black SATA USB 2.0 External Enclosure
Antec MX-100 Aluminum 3.5" Black SATA USB 2.0 External Enclosure

Pros: This unit allows a sata drive to be attached and back up a ide system. Drive can at any time be removed fron enclosure and transferred to a sata system. Drive presence was immediately recognized in Vista Device Manager. Drove then formatted NTFS utilizing Administrative drive tools. Fast and simple to put all together. No misalignment of screws at all.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Stays cool even without fan.

Drive versus Vista

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: best pro is capacity versus price. The drive is silent and without jumpers for sata operation. Registration with Seagate was quick and easy. Downloaded seagate tools / wizard for easy setup and imaging.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Initially used Vista Ultimate 32 bit to initialize and format drive. As drive was for extra capacity and backup, I then attempted to use Vista Backup to drive. Kept getting repeated Sector error message and backup failure. Was it Vista or new drive??? Drive would allow "copying data" but curious about backup malfunction. Went to seagate tools and tested Drive in all manner possible. Drive passed all and third party backup employed. Worked great.

Excellant - AMD as usual

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA5600CZBOX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA5600CZBOX

Pros: Chose 5600 due to price/performance and I am well pleased. Processor coupled with Vista 32 bit, gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H, 8600GT MSI twin turbo, and 2 gig Ram. GA board immediately recognized and set up for processor in bios. No overclocking needed or tried. Noted difference when compared to dual core 3800. Instructions for mounting were excellant. Stayed with thermal tape over paste due to warranty consideration. Stock fan is AMD due to warranty consideration and not overclocking. Great for BF 2142.

Cons: NONE

Overall Review: Unsure how 5600 dual core is with vista 64 bit program. Hardware has outstripped programs and 64 bit driver /hardware issues still remain with Vista 64 bit.
