Great cooler with minor issues

XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 120mm Long Life Bearing CPU Cooler LGA1150 Haswell Compatible
XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 120mm Long Life Bearing CPU Cooler LGA1150 Haswell Compatible

Pros: Solid mounting mechanism (uses thumb screws instead of clips). Enough mounting options (including LGA 2011!) to last me several computers. Looks great, especially with a replacement LED fan. Significant improvement in temps over stock.

Cons: "Anti-vibration" rubber mounts are moderately difficult to install and still result in noticeable vibration on high fan speeds (regardless of using stock or aftermarket fan) -- the entire desk vibrates because of it. The fan seems to blow more air sideways through the gap in the middle than through the heatsink itself .

Overall Review: Installation was a pain considering that my motherboard was already mounted and hooked up, but I anticipated this. For the price, I can't complain. It brought my 9850's temperatures down from 45C idle on stock to around 30C idle.

Bad sectors after a week

WD WD Green WD7500AADS-FR 750GB IntelliPower 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
WD WD Green WD7500AADS-FR 750GB IntelliPower 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Decent price after the recession. Large capacity.

Cons: The drive worked great at first, but a week later, it started developing bad sectors to the point of failing to boot Windows. Slow to begin with (but that's understandable considering it's a Green drive).

Overall Review: I don't recommend using it as a boot drive regardless of reliability issues, as it's a bit on the slow side. I got 90MB/s reads in CrystalDiskMark and a WEI of 5.4.

Awesome case with some flaws

Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Airflow CC-9011078-WW Black Brushed Aluminum and Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Airflow CC-9011078-WW Black Brushed Aluminum and Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: * Awesome looks. It's a very professional-looking case without a lot of "bling" but it still allows for tons of flexibility when it comes to interior lighting and showing off your build. * Solid construction -- doesn't flex much at all during building. * Good airflow, specifically this high-airflow variant. Lots of spots for fans, including the ability to replace one or both drive cages with 120mm fans. * Real standoffs that can be removed -- this allows you to accommodate multiple motherboard sizes without shorting anything out. * Perfect size -- it's big enough to fit my EATX motherboard (with caveats, see "other thoughts") and yet is just small enough to fit under my desk.

Cons: * The front panel looks aluminum, but is in fact plastic. This is not what I was expecting for a product at this price point. My $50 Sigma case had a more premium-feeling front panel. * The power button feels very cheap. The reset button is recessed and is thus rather useless for its intended purpose. * The drive cage design requires both side panels to be removed in order to swap out drives. This sort of defeats the purpose of the otherwise easy-to-access drive bays.

Overall Review: I'm running a dual-socket EATX motherboard (since this is a workstation build) and the right edge of the motherboard covers up 3 of the cable management grommets. This is not a ding against the product, just something to keep in mind if you're looking to install larger boards. The build looks professional/conservative enough for bringing into the office but still retains the "cool factor" of gaming PCs with fancy lighting. Awesome on a tablet, usable on a desktop, overpriced upgrade

Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade
Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade

Pros: Very intuitive user interface for a tablet -- swipe from the edges to reveal menus. Nice apps. Ability to occasionally run full Windows programs on my Iconia W500 tablet makes it an iPad killer in my book. Usable on a desktop too (but with issues). Improved boot performance.

Cons: Retail price for an upgrade is way too high -- all you're really getting is some minor tweaks, a bunch of removed features (DVD playback + Media Center), and a new revenue-generating model for Microsoft (they get 30% of the purchase price for an app). It was worth the $40 promotional price but I refuse to pay any more than that. The Media Center pack (I got it free during the promo but now it's $10) gives you the exact same version of Media Center you already own if you have Windows 7. Considering that it's a paid upgrade they could have at least given it a more "Metro" theme. Won't run Modern apps on more than one monitor (my desktop has 3). Somewhat awkward to use on a desktop -- yes, you can "get used to it", but it really doesn't offer much more than Windows 7 in that area.

Overall Review: I've been using it since the Developer Preview released last year. I highly encourage it if you have a touchscreen. If you have an older Windows 7 computer with no touchscreen, it's not worth the upgrade.

Solidly-built case with a few flaws

XION XON-180 Meshed Black/Red Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
XION XON-180 Meshed Black/Red Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Inexpensive but sturdily built. Front looks pretty good (except for the cheap plastic parts). Inside and back look very good with the black finish.

Cons: There is no proper hard drive cage; the bottom front has a fan but is otherwise an open area. Rear slot brackets are of the cheap "knockout" type -- once you remove one, you can't put it back. The case arrived with the top bent slightly, preventing me from installing the DVD drive. I had to bend it back. Power button feels cheap.

Overall Review: The back panel of the ASRock 970 Extreme3 motherboard matches perfectly with the color scheme of the case. I added a rear 80mm blue fan to complete the red/blue look.

Good deal, not-so-great image

Acer G215HVAbd Black 21.5" 5ms Full HD WideScreen LCD Monitor 200 cd/m2 20,000:1 Max (ACM)
Acer G215HVAbd Black 21.5" 5ms Full HD WideScreen LCD Monitor 200 cd/m2 20,000:1 Max (ACM)

Pros: It's inexpensive, supports full HD (1920x1080) resolution, has a tilt adjustment. For the price I paid, it is an excellent monitor.

Cons: Poor viewing angles (worse than my 3-year-old Acer X223w) -- especially noticeable during dark scenes in movies. No HDMI port, but you can just use a $3 adapter if you need one.

Overall Review: If you need something cheap and need a good work area, this is the one. Look for something else if you're even thinking about doing photo/video editing or watch a lot of movies.
