Awesome JBOD card with Windows 8

Koutech IO-PESA220 PCI Express x 1 Low Profile Ready SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card
Koutech IO-PESA220 PCI Express x 1 Low Profile Ready SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: * Windows 8 compatibility (replaced a RocketRAID 622 causing BSODs) * Came with latest BIOS * Windows auto installed the latest drivers * Sil3132 drivers let you flash the card BIOS right from Device Manager * Rock solid throughput even between 2 port multiplier external enclosures on the same card * Boot delay from Sil3132 is MUCH lower than RocketRaid 622 (Marvell 88SE9128)

Cons: None if you want JBOD. Running these dirt cheap fakeraid cards in RAID mode is a terrible idea if you want performance.

Overall Review: I have two external port multiplier enclosures connected to this card. One SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR5M-BP with 5x2TB Samsung F4 drives, and one Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox with 4x1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 drives. I have a Windows 8 parity Storage Space across all of the F4s, and a Drive Bender pool with all of the 7200.11s. Copying terabytes of data from the Storage Space to the Drive Bender pool resulted in a steady 90+MB/s.

Most Critical Review

Absurd design flaw for enclosure = cooked drive

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Fast drive, nice clean looking enclosure. 2 year warranty is great so you can replace it under RMA after it dies of a self inflicted heat death.

Cons: I have no idea how this product ever made it to market. I can't fathom that Seagate wouldn't have done some basic temperature testing. If you set up SMART monitoring on this drive you'll get regular warnings about the temperature exceeding the max threshold. These drives basically cook themselves to death.

Overall Review: The enclosure needs to be completely redesigned for better airflow. There's a fast 7200rpm drive inside which the enclosure can't come close to cooling properly. If you don't monitor the SMART status everything will seem fine for a while. Do yourself a favor and set up monitoring, and run Seatools before your warranty expires.

1.5A max, this can not output 2.1A

Thermaltake AC0023 TriP Travel Series Surge Protector 3 Outlets with dual USB ports 1.5A output for Tablets, Smartphones, and more
Thermaltake AC0023 TriP Travel Series Surge Protector 3 Outlets with dual USB ports 1.5A output for Tablets, Smartphones, and more

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: It is 1.5A max from a single USB port, and 750mA per USB port with 2 devices connected. Those numbers are plastered all over the product packaging. The Newegg product page is incorrect at the moment (shows 2.1A in numerous places). Even Thermaltake's website lists this as 1.5A max. http://thermaltake.com/products-model_Specification.aspx?id=C_00001863

Overall Review: I'm sure it's a fine product if you are okay with a 1.5A output. That isn't enough to quick charge a tablet, and the 750mA x2 isn't enough to quick charge two smartphones concurrently either. Just FYI in case anyone who needed 2.1A output is considering this model.

Great OTG Y-Cable

Baaqii CB084 Micro USB Host OTG Cable w/ USB power for Samsung phone i9100 i9300 i9220 9250

Pros: * Cheap * Works perfectly * Received quickly considering it was shipped from China

Cons: * None

Overall Review: This is a great OTG y-cable. It works perfectly for powered USB OTG with my Nexus 7 (e.g. watching movies off a usb thumb drive or external USB 2.5" hdd while simultaneously charging your device). Even though it was shipped from China I received the cable quickly.

Nice simple/speedy storage dock

HighPoint RocketStor 5122B Dual-Dedicated 5Gb/s USB 3.0 2.5"/3.5" Smart Backup Storage Dock
HighPoint RocketStor 5122B Dual-Dedicated 5Gb/s USB 3.0 2.5"/3.5" Smart Backup Storage Dock

Pros: * Dedicated ports for concurrent speedy transfers. * Has worked without issues hooked up to multiple USB 3 controllers (Intel, TI, etc.). * Supports both 2.5" and 3.5" drives. * Great for ad-hoc tasks like cloning to/from another drive, wiping drives, etc. * Good deal when on sale and bundled with a PCI-E USB 3 controller card (although I've never used the bundled cards).

Cons: It's one of the few gadgets I own that's white, and the only one on my desk that isn't black.

Overall Review: I've been running one of these for 8 months now. I have another that I purchased last year that I'll hook up to my home server. This thing would also be even more awesome with more SATA connectivity options like mSATA/NGFF (the latter of which didn't even exist when this thing was made).

Great cheap IPS monitors

ASUS VS229H-P Black 22" (Actual size 21.5") Widescreen LED Monitor FHD 1920 x 1080 IPS 5ms (GTG) VESA HDMI DVI VGA 3.5mm Earphone Jack
ASUS VS229H-P Black 22" (Actual size 21.5") Widescreen LED Monitor FHD 1920 x 1080 IPS 5ms (GTG) VESA HDMI DVI VGA 3.5mm Earphone Jack

Pros: I bought 3 of these for a home office/Eyefinity set up. Zero dead pixels, and I've been pleasantly surprised at the panel quality for how cheap these are. 3 year warranty with free cross shipping is icing on the cake. There are several other cheap IPS monitors on the market now but many of them don't have VESA mounts so they are non-starters for me. Google easymountlcd for some awesome and affordable multi-monitor mounts.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Wish I had bought 3 of these sooner. Gaming is awesome on these in Eyefinity mode (running a pair of 7870s currently).
