Great first DSLR

Canon EOS Rebel XS Black 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
Canon EOS Rebel XS Black 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

Pros: Nice little DSLR. The image quality is great all the way to IS 800 and ISO 1600 is perfectly usable. I also love the film like grain at ISO 1600 b/w. The kit lens is surprisingly good. Fast autofocus. Overall, the camera is very comfortable and feels pretty solid (big step up from the film Rebel of old). Goes well with canon 50mm f1.8 II.

Cons: There are things that are slightly annoying. Live view is practically useless. The viewfinder could be bigger, but overall I think it is a solid camera and if you need to upgrade skip the XSi and go straight for D90 which is twice the price but might be worth it.

Overall Review: You'll need a tripod and a case. For whatever you can't find on Newegg B&H is the way to go. There is only one exception to this that I can think of, overstock has a great deal on hoya UV and PL filters. Do get a UV filter (canon or hoya) and leave it on the lens at all time. The 10 dollars you spend on the filer will save your the trouble of buying a new lens. To clean the lens use a blower (Giotto is a good brand). Finally, if you use the flash indoors for the portraits get a flash diffuser (Gary Fong puffer about 20 bux) or just make one out of white film canister. That's about all the wisdom I can share. Enjoy the experience.
