Great
Pros: 45W TDP. "Fast enough". Fairly cheap. Fan is quiet. Overclocks/undervolts very well. Runs cool.
Cons: The bottom of the heatsink is pretty rough. I decided to just leave the thermal pad on there instead of using AS5. It would have been nice if it was a nice and smooth copper contact. Not a big deal though since the heatsink is more than enough to cool this cpu.
Overall Review: I am running this at 2.6ghz and undervolted to 1.100 volts. I was able to overclock it all the way to 3.1ghz at 1.400 volts. At 2.6ghz the cpu maxes out at 37C and at 3.1ghz it maxes out at 57C. I think it can go over 3.1ghz if you push it. I didn't even try since 2.6ghz is already more than anything I need it for. Undervolting it though really helps keep it cool and quiet. When idle, the fan spins at 1000rpm and is virtually silent. Idle temp at 2.6ghz is 24C, when room temp is 23C!
Not bad for the price
Pros: Works great in windows 7. Just make sure you have a net connection and it will download and setup drivers for it automatically when you plug it in. It seems to work fine, no dropped connections. It isn't as fast as ethernet, but that was expected.
Cons: I have not been able to find a drivers for Mac OS X, and I do not think it will work easily with Linux either. I knew this oging in, but it would have been a lot more useful if I could actually use it on any one of my computers.
Overall Review: it came with the extension cable and holder thingy. For ten bucks, there really isn't anything to complain about.
No coasters yet
Pros: I wasn't on planning on writing a review for these because I figured they would just be like all other DVDs, but I have been really impressed. After burning 25 of them at 16x, I haven't had a single coaster. I was expecting to get a couple here and there, but so far these have been as reliable as I could have hoped. I really like that they don't have any annoying designs on face and so they are easy to write on. Memorex and some other brands are really bad in this regard.
Cons: Didn't overburn correctly with my burner. The burn finished, but the overburned parts of the disk were unreadable. The rest was fine though. Since it was just video, It cut off a few seconds of the ending but nothing more. This is progress over my previous disks though, which didn't let me overburn at all.
Overall Review: I don't know how these will hold up over time, but so far so good. I have burned several using the SecurDisc feature on LG burners, which is supposed to let you know if your disks are decaying and suffering from data loss. I guess by that time it won't matter though, since I can just copy my entire collection to a handful of BluRays. I was previously using TDKs, which for me were also 100% coaster free. I figured TDK was just really good at making DVDs, but when I learned they were just rebranded RiTEKs, I figured I would get these for less money. I have not been disappointed.
DD-WRT
Pros: I installed dd-wrt on it. It works very well as my main router. dd-wrt is great, i has bandwidth graphs that show you daily bandwidth usage over serveral months, and many many other great features. I also have a WRT54GL which I am using as a repeater bridge. This way I have a much stronger wireless signal all over the house and I have ethernet ports available in two rooms. It comes with a tiny and supposedly energy effiicient power adapter, much nicer than the one on hte GL(the new GLs use the new adapter). Excellent price. No signs of being refurbished. Came with power adapter and ethernet cable.
Cons: I really wish we can start seeing some cheap, high quality 802.11n/gigabit routers soon. Still, the speeds on this one are acceptable for most uses. Installing dd-wrt on it in Windows 7 runs into some issues. If you have another machine with windows xp then try doing it on that first. If not, windows 7 may work for you.
SilentPlay
Pros: I bought this just because it was cheap and SATA, I really didn't pay much attention to it. Now that I have used it for a while though I think it is worth mentioning that it really is an excellent burner. I have not had a single coaster yet using TDK/Sony/Memorex media. It has no problem burning DVDs at 16x. What really is very cool about it though is SilentPlay. This lets you reduce the spin speed during playback in Nero, so the drive becomes whisper quiet when you are watching movies(it isn't very loud at full speed either). This is a really great feature that makes this drive stand out from the crowd. Certainly makes it worth the extra dollar or two it might cost more than a competing drive that lacks this capability.
Cons: It would be nice if it came with a newer and fuller version of Nero, but at this price it is hard to complain.
Great
Pros: Burned 7 full disks, no coasters. Burned at full 8x in my LG burner. Good price compared to other brands. Disks look "professional" without any stupid graphics on the front, making them easy to write on.
Cons: Expensive at a dollar a piece compared to single layer disks.
Overall Review: Good purchase, I am now going to buy a spindle of SL DVDs from TDK.
