Still One Of The Best

XFX GeForce 6800XT 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card PVT42KUDE3
XFX GeForce 6800XT 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Graphics Card PVT42KUDE3

Pros: Although this video card still uses the older 8X AGP standard it is still capable of excellent framerates and great gaming quality. This card paired up with an Athlon 3200 and 2048MB of PC3200 scored 50,088 on Aquamark 3. This card is the best value for dollar spent on any AGP upgrade. The 7800 will beat it, but at a premium price. If you're looking for that last GPU upgrade before going to PCI-e then this card is where it's at. You can buy a barebones PCI-e for what most vendors are charging for the 7800 AGP, so I wouldn't reccomend anything more expensive than this card.

Cons: I can't really find any faults with the card. It's layout and performance are wonderful. If I had to mention anything close to a con it would be the massive power requirements. This card needs lots of pushaline or it isn't going to do anything but blue-screen. But, that's the cost of performance. Speed is relative to money..... how fast can you afford to go?

Overall Review: Newegg.com suggests a minimum of a 300 WATT PSU to run this card. It will let it run very minor application, but causes cheap PSU's to go belly up when you stomp on the gas. I would reccomend nothing less than a very good 400 WATT PSU; 500 WATT if you can afford it. Having a superb quality motherboard and PSU will certainly help this card achieve it's potential.

SAPPHIRE Radeon X1950PRO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100176L
SAPPHIRE Radeon X1950PRO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100176L

Pros: Well, it booted the computer in 2D mode, installed XP fine. And the price was competitive, which is the main reason that persuaded me to buy it. But you always get what you pay for.

Cons: After booting to the XP Pro desktop with no problems I installed the supplied drivers. Upon rebooting the computer the card failed miserably. After the XP splash screen posted the monitor went blank and lost it's signal from the video card. The 3D engine on the card was DOA. After using Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode to remove the default drivers I tried to install the drivers from ATI's site. Still same verdict.

Overall Review: This is the third Sapphire card that I have had to RMA this year. I feel thoroughly burned on Sapphire now. Their product quality isn't reinforcing my opinion about them. The only reason I'm giving this a two-star review is because Newegg's customer service and RMA policy is still the best in the business. Good job Newegg! Wish I could say the same for Cr@pphire.

Works like a charm

OKGEAR LAN-SI 3.5” SATA series HDD e-storage Ethernet/ USB 2.0 combo enclosure
OKGEAR LAN-SI 3.5” SATA series HDD e-storage Ethernet/ USB 2.0 combo enclosure

Pros: This enclosure enables a computer user to have NAS at a fraction of the cost of pre-manufactured NAS units. It installs effortlessly, and setup is a breeze. If you can read you can have it running in under 5 minutes. This enclosure accpets all sizes of SATA and SATA II drives made to date, and the product website makes claimes of future upgradability to RAID 1, 0, and RAID 5. It also works well in simple external drive mode via USB/USB 2.0

Cons: While data throughput via USB 2.0 is up to par with most external drives of this variety, its performance via RJ-45 (network) is dismal. This is, however, due to the 100Mbps throughput speed of the network connection versus the 400Mbps throughput speed of USB 2.0 connection, and should not be mistaken as a product fault/defect.

Overall Review: This product suits all SOHO needs. It is simple to set up and use, and should prove ample for most all SOHO applications. For the price it simply can't be beat for it's intended uses. If you want 1TB+ storage, or advanced RAID capabilities, then this is NOT what you're looking for.

Best Budget Gamer Out There

Intel Pentium D 930 - Pentium D Presler Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 95W Processor - BX80553930
Intel Pentium D 930 - Pentium D Presler Dual-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 775 95W Processor - BX80553930

Pros: This thing overclocks up to 33% or more with most capable motherboards, and does it on stock cooling. I got this baby up to 4.005GHz (267 FSB X 15 Multi.) on the stock heatsink and fan. It performed very well and I had extremely limited instability issues. It ran a little warm under full throttle, and started to distort the on-board sound, so I backed it down to 3.8GHz and everything promptly strainghtened out. I can remember when a 15% overclock was something to brag about... and those days weren't in the too distant past.

Cons: Well, it's not a CRAY, or even a Core 2 Duo.

Overall Review: The addition of a simple water cooling sollution (less than $xx USD, delivered) made overclocking to 4.3GHz extremely easy. Erring on the side of caution I backed it down to 4.005GHz and it has been a rock solid performer ever since. In it's current state it will give an AMD FX60 (a $400.00 USD processor, if you can find one) a run for it's money. If you are an average or intermediate gamer, then get this CPU, mate it up with a decent motherboard of reputable manufacture, two to four GB of quality RAM, and an intermediate video card and you have a superb budget gamer's box. If you need more grunt than this, then it's like the old addage says... "Speed is relative to money: How fast can you afford to go!"

Mixed Thoughts

ABIT IP-95 LGA 775 VIA P4M890 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ABIT IP-95 LGA 775 VIA P4M890 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Extremely stable, easy to set up, and has a name-brand with a good reputation. Easy on the American Express.

Cons: Bought this board with modest overclocking in mind after I read several reviews. Tried to overclock a Pentium D 925 but the BIOS FSB wouldnt take. I started out at 225 and the mobo wouldnt even post. I gradually worked my way up to 280 before the mobo would post in an OC'ed state; but the overall CPU frequency only showed to be 3130 MHz (3.1GHz)... which isn't right at all. It should have read 4200MHz. Also, this board does NOT support dual CHANNEL memory, althought it does support dual FORMAT, i.e.. DDRI or DDRII.

Overall Review: This board is rock solid, and while used in a default stock setup it does perform quite well. Buf if you're interested in overclocking with this mobo, even though it has certain OC options, you would be far better off with a board that costs 20 more squid. If you want it all with minimal problems go with the Axxxck 775Dual-VSTA. It supports DDRI, DDRII, AGP, PCIe, and Conroe. It gives the Intel 965 a run for it's money at a fraction of the cost.

Corsair lives up to it's reputation... AGAIN!

CORSAIR 512MB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Laptop Memory Model VS512SDS400
CORSAIR 512MB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Laptop Memory Model VS512SDS400

Comments: Got two of these DIMMs to replace the single Infineon 256MB PC2700 DIMM that came with my HP ze2108wm notebook (Don't believe the rubbish from HP; ze2000 series notebooks can and do support PC3200 with their ATI RS480M chipsets). The performance increase is amazing. Quite to my surprise SiSoft Sandra 2005 Professional lists the RAM timings as CL 2.0 (2-2-2-6) which is blistering fast for any SO-DIMM. The 1GB of RAM allows me to play just about any game on the market, and allows me to run any program of choice. Windows boot time was cut in half, and program initializations are much quicker. No more waiting around watching the little hourglass. This RAM is definitely worth the couple extra dollars over the competition. No need to buy the expensive stuff with the fancy names and nauseating stickershock. This stuff is where it's at!
