Easiest thing in the world

HP MediaSmart EX470, Windows Home Server w/ AMD 1.8 GHz Sempron 512MB DDR2 500GB HDD
HP MediaSmart EX470, Windows Home Server w/ AMD 1.8 GHz Sempron 512MB DDR2 500GB HDD

Pros: HP/MSFT couldn't have made it any easier to install if they tried. I spent most of my time moving disks around so I could jam more storage into the box. And during which, I hosed my PC, so in went the restore-disk, and presto-chango -- I had it back. I'm really impressed with how well the whole experience went. It's exactly what I've been looking for: cheap, reliable solution for network storage / remote access / backup.

Cons: I had to spend an extra 10 minutes figuring out that port 4125 needs to be open for RDP to the WHS console. Not a big deal.

not reliable

RiDATA Lightning Series 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model RDCF8G-233X-LIG
RiDATA Lightning Series 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model RDCF8G-233X-LIG

Pros: Fast advertised speed, plenty large for holding digital pictures

Cons: After a few weeks of use, it started flaking out. I used it exclusively in my Digital Rebel XTi, which I've had no problems with since I bought it 1+ yrs ago. I went back to my Kingston 50x card, and things are happy. I was able to use a recovery tool to salvage most of the images. It seems like only a few blocks went bad, but it effected the FAT. With digital photography, I need a 100% reliable card, and this isn't it. It was an xmas present, so I'm way past the return/replace window. I hope their warranty dept handles this without putting me through the ringer.

Overall Review: During salvage, I used both a Windows tool and 'dd' (cygwin tools) to read the card. BOTH hung in several places, presumably while the windows drivers tried to work past the trashed blocks.

Very cool, but radio seems weak

D-Link DWL-G730AP High Speed Wireless Pocket Router/AP
D-Link DWL-G730AP High Speed Wireless Pocket Router/AP

Pros: Very cool form factor and packaging. Definitely targetted for travelers.

Cons: The radio on this thing seems really weak, despite maxing it out in the settings tab. I couldn't keep a stable connection from one level up and two rooms over (in my house). My laptop - same protocol, speed, position - worked like a champ every time. So I'm fairly certain it's either broken or designed badly. Either way, I'm off to run a wire... yay.
