Most Favorable Review

Great inexpensive upgrade!

ViewSonic 20" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WSXGA LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D Optiquest Series Q20WB
ViewSonic 20" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WSXGA LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D Optiquest Series Q20WB

Pros: 1.) Great display quality & brightness! 2.) Anti-glare coating. 3.) Controls are simple, and placed in the lower right corner of the frame, so they don't interfere. No glowing logos or other junk that can interfere with playing games/watching movies in the dark. 4.) Productivity gain - widescreen layout lets me use 2 windows side-by-side (de-maximize & "Tile Windows Horizontally"). Awesome for my work - can read stuff online & write in another window! 5.) NO DEAD PIXELS! WOO!

Cons: 1.) No height adjustments... had to use books & such to adapt to my desk/chair situation. 2.) Driver installation program is a pain in the neck (but comes in multiple languages, and has ALL the drivers).

Overall Review: The only thing that keeps this monitor from getting a "5" is the height adjustment (hello, Viewsonic?). Otherwise, a VERY fine purchase for the money.

Convenient

Link Depot LD-SCREWSKIT Screw Kit
Link Depot LD-SCREWSKIT Screw Kit

Pros: They're screws. Um.

Cons: Case is a bit low-end, but hey, what do you expect for the price?

Overall Review: Nice to have 1-2 of these laying around, so you don't have to stop building in case you run out of screws (i.e. get screwed, time-wise).

Great case for the price!

APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Design (black/silver/blue-light) is awesome, nothing is out of place. The 3 gauges on the front are not only useful, but make a great conversation piece (technology as art?). Construction is pretty solid, except for the relatively thin sheetmetal - but then again, if the metal was thicker, the case would weigh more and cost more. Cooling is set up nicely - 80mm blue-LED fan on top + another one on rear panel (can be replaced with a 120mm fan - mounts provided), plus 2x side vents, plus 2x mounting points for 80mm fans on the front. Installation is easy, nothing felt cramped - the only thing you have to watch out for are the die-cut expansion card slot covers (need a pair of needle-nose pliers) and the die-cut metal plates covering the 5.25" and 3.5" bays.

Cons: Relatively thin sheet metal - don't get this if you need a "solid" case. But DO get it if you want something lightweight & relatively cheap, that still holds its own. The only included documentation was the front-panel pinout sheet. Not THAT big of a deal, but somewhat annoying. (P.S. If you're going to add 80mm fans to the front panel, don't bother trying to make them fit between the metal wall and the fan grille - it looks like it's going to fit, but it's about 3mm short. The fans will *have to* go inside. IWBNI a manual pointed that out *before* I wasted 5 mins on that attempt.) That's all - overall, this is a 9.5/10 experience for a case in this price point.

Overall Review: Advice to the manufacturer: This case would be darn-near-perfect if: 1.) There were options for different color schemes. 2.) The front door had a locking hinge (stays open when opened). 3.) A basic manual was included.

Nice, easy entry-level controller

Pros: 1.) Green glow around the knobs makes adjustments in the dark easy. 2.) Included cold-cathode tubes are pretty solid, and the embedded triangular bases are easy to stick on. Double-sided tape is included, too - it's the little things that count... ;) 4.) Simple and straightforward installation - everything is keyed so you can't plug the wrong cable into the wrong slot. The only exception is the possibility of connecting 2 fans to a single cable - it comes with both 3- and 4-pin connectors. But, it's clearly covered in the manual, and anyone with an ounce of brains could figure that one out anyway.

Cons: Questionable color scheme - BLUE cold-cathode lights and GREEN glow around the knobs? Guys, pick a color and stick with it. Watch out for the completely exposed capacitors when plugging in the cables - one wrong move, and you could tear a cap off the circuit board. Would have been nice to cover up the fragile components...

Things I like & hate about this camcorder...

JVC GZ-MG27US CCD 2.7" LCD 32X Optical Zoom HDD/Flash Memory Camcorder
JVC GZ-MG27US CCD 2.7" LCD 32X Optical Zoom HDD/Flash Memory Camcorder

Pros: 1.) NO MORE TAPES! Hooray for HDD/SD recording! 2.) The little "joystick" on the LCD frame - VERY convenient for menu browsing. 3.) Ability to send still-frame captures to the SD card, while the video records onto the HD - in my line of work (real estate), this allows me to take quick shots of property details, in the middle / in between sessions, of the video walk-through, then pop out the card, put it into my Treo, and E-mail the images to the office immediately... without having to wait until I have the opportunity to unload the HDD contents (which could be several hours later). 4.) Small size & relatively light weight - fits into a small camera case. No protruding bits that can snag on anything. 5.) Great video quality and, surprising for a camcorder, good still-frame capture quality.

Cons: 1.) Menu item titles can be confusing for a 1st-time / occasional user - have to consult the manual due to some items being labeled in VERY ambiguous terms. Example: is the "SP" mode widescreen or not? Darn, have to check the manual... oh, it's 1440x1080... great, still doesn't answer my query... break out the calculator... divide by 2.25... yup, it's 640x480, that's 4:3. How hard was it to add "widescreen/non-widescreen" designations to the menu items? Grr. 2.) Records in .TOD format - must use JVC's software to export. Would be nice to have the flexibility to use it on other computers w/o having to bring the CD & spending time on installing it.

Overall Review: Overall, it's a GREAT cam for anyone who needs "more than the basics" but must stay within a reasonable budget. Suggestions for a first-time owner: as with all cams - get a good camera case, couple of extra SD cards (just in case), a spare battery, a car charger, and cleaning items. Also, make an extra copy of the software CD & drop in the user manual + revisions, and you'll be all set.

Good looks AND performance!

Rosewill RE502-BLK 500 W ATX 12V v2.03 Aluminum Power Supply

Comments: Wow. I'm really impressed. Aside from looking cool as all h*** (black with gold fan grilles, dual blue-backlit fans, chromed fan speed control), this PSU features excellent stability and heat tolerance (the machine it's in is in an auto shop, no A/C, so ambient temp is usually around 90-95 degrees). Also, I love the fact that all cables are net-wrapped so they're nice n neat, and it includes 2 SATA power connectors (saving me about 10 bucks VS having to buy adapters). Overall, I would highly recommend this PSU to anyone other than the extreme-high-end game-machine builders!
