Good monitor

SAMSUNG 22" LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D 220WM
SAMSUNG 22" LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI-D 220WM

Pros: Good image quality and great size. Very bright, maybe even overly bright. Matte screen. I previously used a LCD with a glossy screen - the glare is amazingly annoying; more so than a CRT.

Cons: The built in speakers are low quality. If you only need basic sound it might work. The speakers on my 5 year old 17" Samsung LCD are better by far. The internal speakers are on par with my laptop speakers. Multipurpose controls make changing settings difficult.

Overall Review: The image is clear and bright, perhaps overly bright depending on the user. I have this monitor running off a AGP Geforce 6200 of unknown brand at the native resolution using DVI without any video issues. The multi-purpose controls can be difficult to use because pressing what looks like the speaker volume control changes the brightness mode. It is necessary to press volume up before turning the volume down...you may get used to it, but it's more of an annoyance for me. Changing any setting such as brightness or contrast require using menus. There is a button that changes brightness mode for sports, movies, Internet, etc, but it seems more like a gimmick. I have never used it. I rather that button be used for turning the volume down. The blue power LED is annoyingly bright in a dark room.

Xerox 6180

Xerox Phaser 6180MFP/D MFC / All-In-One Up to 31 ppm 600 x 600 dpi Color Print Quality Color Ethernet (RJ-45) / LPT / USB Laser Printer
Xerox Phaser 6180MFP/D MFC / All-In-One Up to 31 ppm 600 x 600 dpi Color Print Quality Color Ethernet (RJ-45) / LPT / USB Laser Printer

Pros: Color scanning and printing look decent. I like the ability to scan in multiple formats to a network share. Print speed seems decent and first page out time is good. Works with Xerox PCL universal printer driver.

Cons: When I first set up the 6180, the printer was set to use mm and A4 papers which I set to inch and letter. I thought it was a bit unusual but nothing more. I later found the country setting was UK but the setting was not obvious until dug into one of the menus. When I set it to USA, it completely reset the NVRAM and lost everything else I set previously. All the address book entries disappeared and the TCP/IP configuration went to DHCP, etc. Many settings require rebooting the printer such as number of rings to answer. The web interface is very limited on this model compared to our other Xerox printers. Settings such as startup page cannot be configured, nor can I set fax settings, etc. The only things I was really able to configure was the TCP/IP and address book. Other Xerox work group printers have all settings available at the control on the web interface. Since this printer is at a field office 4 mi away, this can be a huge issue. The 6180 is a bit of a disappointm

Overall Review: This printer is TALL. I had the printer set on a typical table and the platen is at my eye level and I'm 5'8". The menus can be a bit confusing and I don't like how most of the control panel items are not available on the web interface. This is different than every other Xerox workgroup printer I support. I consider it an important feature since I put this printer at a field office and I don't want to have to drive out there to configure it should something happen to it. The fact that there's no way to back up the address books seems weak too considering that hundreds of entries can be made and the NVRAM can be inadvertently flushed like I mentioned above. Overall a good printer, but I find the user/admin interface very lacking especially the web interface.

NEC EA241WM

NEC Display Solutions EA241WM-BK Black 24" 5ms Height,Pivot and Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/Speakers 400 cd/m2 1000:1
NEC Display Solutions EA241WM-BK Black 24" 5ms Height,Pivot and Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor w/Speakers 400 cd/m2 1000:1

Pros: This color reproduction is fairly good. Viewing angles are decent for a TN panel. Angles aren't too far from IPS and doesn't have contrast shift like VA panels. Color shift does happen but better than the Acer 24" it replaced. Monitor has a source button and controls are clearly labeled unlike my previous Acer which does not have source button and button labels were black on black. Out of the box settings are very good and very usable with minor tweaks. Monitor comes with VGA, DVI, audio, and USB cables. The base is assembled, so all that's needed is for the monitor to be unwrapped. A big plastic band is wrapped around the packing materials inside and can be used take everything out of the box. Back of the panel has a grab handle -- very thoughtful. The Acer 24" that this replaced was a bit cumbersome because the base was not attach and sometimes has misaligned mating surfaces when I go to assemble it. Instructions appear to be printed on recycled material.

Cons: The control stick nub can be a bit difficult to use. If it were slightly larger, longer it would make a big difference. I have an NEC at home with the exact same controls but the buttons and stick are larger and easier to manipulate. The glossy bezel can bit a bit distracting for some people. It's not glossy like chrome or polished automobile; rather, it's more like a satiny semi-gloss.

Overall Review: We bought 36 of these at the office. Initial impression is that the color and viewing angles are decent. There is some misinformation out there that says this is a VA panel of some sort. I can say with certainty that this is a TN panel. These monitors are EPEAT Gold certified. I'm not sure what ECO mode is but if you turn it on, brightness control turns into Eco adjust and there is a counter that indicates amount of CO2 emissions reduced with ECO mode. I assume ECO mode is automatic control of the backlight brightness to optimize power savings. Not sure why Newegg sells these for $450 since our vendor had them for $100 less before tax, California Waste Fee, and delivery.

Good looking large monitor but mediocre user interface

Acer 24" WUXGA LCD Monitor with HDCP Support and Height & Pivot Adjustments 5 ms D-Sub, DVI B243Wbdr
Acer 24" WUXGA LCD Monitor with HDCP Support and Height & Pivot Adjustments 5 ms D-Sub, DVI B243Wbdr

Pros: These monitors have good adjustment for height, swivel, and tilt adjustments. The matte screen is great for office environments and the screen is bright. Out of the box, it's in fact too bright for most users. The 1920x1200 resolution is great when you need more than one document open at a time without switching back and forth.

Cons: The chief complaint I've received about this monitor is that it's too bright out of the box. The user interface can be difficult and not intuitive. The labels are very hard to read because they are etched. Adjusting the contrast and brightness requires 6 key presses to get to that menu and the menu is not labeled as something you might think to look at to adjust them. Portrait mode is useless unless you're looking dead on at it. There is significant color shift if you move to the side. Using it with more than one computer is annoying because the input setting is in the menu. If the analog input side goes out even briefly, such as during a reboot, the monitor will switch to DVI and you have to go thru the menus again. The build tolerance is iffy, but they seem solid. At the bottom where the base is mounted to the riser, there are two triangle markings that you would think indicate how the base is to be attached but about 4/5ths of my units did not line up here but they swivel fine.

Overall Review: I just deployed about 2 doz of these screens at the office during the past month. So far the feedback from users have been positive. The chief complaint is brightness out of the box and the complicated process to adjust this. The markings for the keys are just etched in the plastic so they are difficult to read. I haven't noticed any dead pixels on my screen nor have I received any reports of them from my users.

Zonet Bluetooth Adapter

Zonet Technologies, Inc. ZUB6211C Bluetooth V2.0 Adapter
Zonet Technologies, Inc. ZUB6211C Bluetooth V2.0 Adapter

Pros: Setup was very easy, just insert the CD and install the software. Plug in the adapter and go. Works fine under Windows XP SP1. It works good as stated and the range is just right for my needs. The package was very easy to open. You can actually just pull it apart unlike other packaging that requires you to go at it with a sharp opject.

Cons: none

Overall Review: I wish the LED would illuminate the Bluetooth logo instead of the side. You can still see the LED though.
