AMD starting to get back on track

AMD Phenom 9950 X4 Black Edition - Phenom X4 Agena Quad-Core 2.6 GHz Socket AM2+ 140W Processor - HD995ZFAGHBOX
AMD Phenom 9950 X4 Black Edition - Phenom X4 Agena Quad-Core 2.6 GHz Socket AM2+ 140W Processor - HD995ZFAGHBOX

Pros: I got this unpacked and loaded into the PC, fired it up and it worked perfect. Then I set the RAM from 800 to 1066 (Which the RAM was), and it overclocked the 9950 to 3.0GHz Prime95/SuperPi/BurnIn stable. No complaints.

Cons: In most cases, most people can only get around 3.0GHz - 3.2GHz without huge voltage increases and water cooling or better.

Overall Review: According to the Newegg specs, this doesn't come with a CPU cooler. It does. I know because I now have a spare, since I ordered a seperate cooler with it, and discovered one in the box!

What happened Gigabyte?

GIGABYTE GA-M61SME-S2 AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-M61SME-S2 AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: It can take up to 8 GB of RAM. Built in 6100 Nvidia graphics. Built in sound.

Cons: The first one was DOA. It would power up and spin the CPU fan, but it never posted. Nor did it give any error code beeps. After an hour on hold w/ Gigabyte. They told me that it was a RAM issue. (If I removed the RAM and turned it on, it would give the RAM error beep patern.) I went out and bought the exact RAM they told me to. (Kingston Value Ram) The new RAM did the exact same thing and did not fix the problem. After another hour on hold, Gigabyte admitted that the board was probably bad and to exchange it. I purchased a second motherboard and the new one worked 1st try. However, for some reason, the keyboard & mouse PS2 ports are weird. I used a PS2 keyboard when installing windows with no problems. When I gave the finished system to the client, he could not get his PS2 keyboard to work with it and had to go buy a USB keyboard. Strange.

Overall Review: Why does Gigabyte still put parallel ports on thier motherboards? Does anyone use these anymore? And what happened to Gigabyte's quality control department? Gigabyte used to be my 1st choice for Mobos. Not so much anymore.

A hot card, in more ways then one.

EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Graphics Card 512-P3-N975-TR
EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Graphics Card 512-P3-N975-TR

Pros: This card is awesome, I bought one to SLI with my 8800GT and it does the trick wonderfully. (I had to BIOS flash my 8800GT to 9800GT, but they are the same core GPU.) Works great except has noted below.

Cons: This card does get hot. If you smoke, have pets, or have a dusty house, then this card will clog up, and the temps will hit 100c or higher.

Overall Review: I removed the cover plate to the heat sink and added a 2nd fan directly over the heat fins and now the card never goes over 80c.

Good cards, Great Space Heaters

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100244L
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100244L

Pros: After trying to get the card to fit in the case with the HDs, (They are very long, and I had to move things around.) they fired up with no issues. Crossfire X kicked in without any hassles.

Cons: They run really hot. Look up the fan fix online to keep them cooler. Long cards. (They are roughly the same length of a ATX motherboard, and you still have to have another .5 inches to plug in the PCI-E 6 pin power cables.

Overall Review: I don't know what the guy below me is talking about. I never touched the driver discs that came with them. I just downloaded the newest Catalyst drivers that were online and they worked great.

8GB of awesomeness

Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996587
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996587

Pros: I just purchased a 2nd set to max out my 4 MB slots for 8GBs of goodness. 5-4-4-12 @ 1.8v works like a charm.

Cons: Not really a con. Or a Con that turned into a Pro. My1st set was originally a 5-4-4-12 @ 2.0 set. One of the sticks were bad and Mushkin had just discontinued them, so they replaced them with this set. I like them so much I bought a 2nd pair.

Overall Review: 8GB with Vista Ultimate 64bit, I figure I should not need to worry about memory upgrades for awhile, and will be ready for the slew of new games coming out over the fall season.

Great Drives

Western Digital Blue WD6400AAKS 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Western Digital Blue WD6400AAKS 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 1.2 TB in RAID 0 for $170. WD means they will last a long time.

Cons: None Yet.

Overall Review: Someone talked about pour packaging. I ordered 3 drives and they came a secure syrofoam package, that looked like it was made to hold up to 4 HDs.
