Exceptionally Fast, Nearly Silent 2 TB HDD

Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Despite the specification of 5900 rpm this is the fastest platter based hard drive I have ever owned. It easily outpaces the various Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi 7200 rpm hard drives I have owned/currently own and use. Seagate states a MTBF of 1 million hours in a 24/7 operating environment.. Easy install and formatting, passed Self-test, no errors or problems indicated, all systems go. Hardest part here was rooting around and finding some screws to use in securing the HDD in the drive bay. : ) I installed the Seagate ST2000VN000 in an older system, a Gateway GT5636e Q6600 powered quadcore that I have owned for 5-6 years and upgraded considerably to Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium with 8gb of ADATA DDR2 memory and a fast 1 TB Seagate ST3100528AS as the system drive. This unit does use the older SATA 2 (3.0 gb/s) standard, but this new Seagate was still amazingly fast in this environment. I am not sure how much faster it would be on a SATA 3 (6.0 gb/s) system. ATTO Max Read was 181 mb/s. Max Write was 174.7 mb/s. Crystal Diskmark 3.0.1 as follows Rand. Seq. Read 165.3 mb/s Rand. Seq. Write 162.1 mb/s 512K Read 50.56 mb/s Write 82.62 mb/s 4K Read .565mb/s Write 1.178 mb/s 4K QD32 Read 1.259 mb/s Write 1.062 mb/s. I added the drive to this computer in order to make yet another backup of my large music collection. The hard work and many hours that went into 300gb of record and cd rips cannot be backed up too many times in my estimation. Transferring the 300gb of mp3 files from the 1 TB Seagate ST3100528AS system drive to the new 2 TB Seagate ST2000VN000 took just a shade over 1 hour and 36 minutes. Windows 7 showed the transfer rate to run very consistently between 66-70 mb/s, mostly closer to the 70 mbps mark. During the entire transfer process the ST20000VN000 remained exceptionally quiet, undetectable over the nearly silent cpu and case fans of this computer. Impressive!

Cons: There are no cons to be noted at this time. I have only had the drive installed for a few hours at this time. No problems so far. I will review again later wrt stability and longevity of this drive.

Overall Review: As noted by others, this drive costs a bit more in comparison to some other 2TB HDDs. I attribute this to the design of this drive for use in a 24/7 NAS server setting. I hope and believe this drive is likely to be manufactured and QC'd to a higher level than the average HDD. The warranty of 3 years is only average for a HDD in this price range. The ST2000VN000 is dead silent, very very fast, easy to install and offers lots and lots of storage space. What's not to like? : )

Poor Choice / Bad DVD Burns

Pros: It was very cheap and thank goodness I got the Nero CD so I got a little value from this terrible mistake of a purchase.

Cons: A pal and I both bought one of these from Newegg. We both do quality scans of our DVD Burns. Worst scans from ANY DVD Drive I have ever owned. Same for my pal. Horrible, PI errors average near 1000 and PIF goes up to 20 on some burns (KProbe Scans). Updated to latest Firmware and still just awful, across all types and brands of media I have tried. Taiyo Yuden, Sony, and Verbatim +/-Rs, all terrible. My other DVD Burner in same system gives gorgeous burns of same material with same burning software and blank discs. Same result for my buddy.

Overall Review: Worst drive I have ever owned. I will never buy another Samsung DVD Drive. Horrible product. Seriously.

Avoid Unless You Want Windows 10 Pro Education OS

Pros: This doesn't come with Windows 10 Pro as specified in the listings. It actually comes with Windows 10 Pro Education OS installed. You might want to google the differences. Mine came with W10 version 1803 installed. That is 3, and almost 4 full versions behind the current W10 release. The good - It is fairly snappy for a lower end processor and set to Max Power runs the OS pretty well. Battery life seems decent but have only had it for a few days. Seems like a solid enough case and screen is ok for 1360x768. Have not tried in tablet mode yet.

Cons: Comes with Education Version of Windows 10 Pro. For goodness sake get the Specifications Right! I would not have purchased had I had that information. Took many hours to get Windows up to date to version 1909. On day three when I powered up I started having problems with the wireless adapter staying connected. Took a couple of hours to get it working right again. Have not shut down yet to see if problem persists after powering down, and the starting up again. If the adapter problems continue it is going back to newegg.

Overall Review: Looked good per the info listed at Newegg, unfortunately that info is wrong wrt the OS installed. WIFI problems with no way to connect hardwired are a PITA. I will give this a day or 2 more but it may be going back.

Finally Got A Bad One

ADATA 64GB S102 Pro Advanced USB 3.0 Flash Drive, Speed Up to 100MB/s (AS102P-64G-RGY)
ADATA 64GB S102 Pro Advanced USB 3.0 Flash Drive, Speed Up to 100MB/s (AS102P-64G-RGY)

Pros: The price was good and I have generally had good luck with ADATA Flash Drives.

Cons: From early on this 1/2 full drive would trigger Windows to pop up a message "There is a problem with this drive. Windows recommends you scan this drive to correct errors". I would let windows scan it and when done W10 would say there were no errors. After very light use the drive began to either not be recognized at all across multiple computers, or would be recognized but then disappear from the list of drives. I was finally able to move the data to an HDD on my main computer and reformat the ADATA drive. It took 5 tries to complete. The drive then promptly disappeared from the list of drives and hasn't shown up since. At this point I woill not be able to trust this ADATA 64gb USB 3.0 drive to keep my data safe and available.

Overall Review: I have had decent service from the 16 and 32gb versions of this same Drive. I guess I finally got a bad one. Will be hesitant to buy ADATA again, especially one larger than 32gb. Hey ADATA, how bout a replacement? How well do you stand behind your products?

So Far So Good

ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 AM4 AMD Promontory B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 AM4 AMD Promontory B450 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Low price but feels like a quality built board. Paired with Ryzen 5 1600, 16gb (2x8gb) of Ballistix Sport LT 3200mhz memory and a Patriot VPN NVME PCIe 3.0 x 4 m.2 ssd. Used old case, PSU and Gigabyte 1060 3gb graphics card. Used these parts to upgrade an aging desktop. Install went fine. Booted up at 2400mhz for memory. Rebooted into bios and set XMP for the rated 3200mhz profile. Rebooted and memory has been running at 3200mhz ever since with zero problems and no voltage boost needed. I have since used ASrocks A-Tuning utility to bump all six cores to 3700mhz, again with no voltage increase and little to no heat increase using stock Wraith Spire cooler. The Patriot m.2 drive performs at rated speeds in this motherboard. Everything runs great so far. I may try to push cpu a little higher later. TBH I am surprised and pleased how easily this budget board OC'd both memory and CPU with minimal effort.

Cons: There is a relatively low volume, low cycle hum I hear at times that swells, fades, and repeats. Not sure if this is graphics, CPU fan, PSU, MB or what. Not really a problem at this point but will try to figure out what's causing this eventually.

Overall Review: I am impressed with the versatility and performance of this budget board to date. I did make one call to ASrock customer support during the upgrade. I was connected with a tech relatively quickly and he helped me troubleshoot a minor problem. I will strongly consider ASrock for any future PC builds.

Really Poor Design

SanDisk 64GB Ultra Dual Drive m3.0, Speed Up to 150MB/s (SDDD3-064G-G46)
SanDisk 64GB Ultra Dual Drive m3.0, Speed Up to 150MB/s (SDDD3-064G-G46)

Pros: It works. Kind of slow but most USB 3.0 drives are still relatively slow so I knew that when I bought this. Decent price for storage size.

Cons: The form factor is terrible. The physical design of this unit blocks the USB port next to it on the "ring" side, and also blocks ports below and above it due to the thickness. Just an awful design. The plastic housing feels cheap and will likely break even if you baby it, as I do. My part in this is I should have looked more closely at the design and not purchased it.

Overall Review: I absolutely do not recommend this product due to the awful form factor. I got it cheap with free shipping so will probably keep it rather than be bothered with the return process. It does not work with my android phone, cannot even plug it in. Did I mention the form factor is not good? Too bulky by far. However, that is at least partially due to the otterbox case, so not totally the fault of the flash drive. Just sharing this to let folks know it likely will not plug into any phone that is housed inside a protective case. I removed the case and plugged in the flash drive and there was no recognition by the phone. In fairness maybe I am missing a step or need a 3rd party app. Don't know, not going to waste any more time on it. Disappointed with this, but it's at least partially my fault for making an impulse purchase rather than considering things more carefully.
