Update After owning it for few months
Pros: Silent and runs fairly cool with a single slot cooler. Performs on par with 9600gt give or take and cost less.
Cons: Again I wish it has a little bit more vram and a little bit more memory bandwidth but who cares at this price it starts beating down on 8800gt performance for fraction of the cost.
Overall Review: Does this 8800gs love to overclock or what? Stock 550/1375/1600. After tweaks in bios and fan @ 100% I could do 756/1836/2180. You can also up the voltage in bios like 8800gt for further overclocking. Directions are floating around the web.
Non reference junk stay away!
Cons: Stock clocks are 675/1375/900 Awful! This card is not a reference design using cheaper components to cut costs. This card will not overclock because of it.
Overall Review: First card would freeze constantly without any overclocking. The second card seems to be working. Newegg's specifications is wrong! I was expecting the shader to be at least 1675 or so because of 675 core clocks but you get 1375. At these speeds it's no better than reference 8800gt. I tried overclocking. All it does is give me Blue Screens of Death.
Very good for the money
Pros: Good price. Very sturdy. It's desktop replacement laptop. It's not very heavy but it is big. Has all the features you would need. Gaming is actually decent on it. Can play BC2 easily with most settings maxed out. There are other laptops in this price range but not with the bigger screen and all the bells and whistles dv7 has to offer.
Cons: There are some flaws with this laptop. The touchpad does stop working if you use keyboard and touchpad at the same time but it's not a problem for me.
Overall Review: I bought this elsewhere because the price was much cheaper. Look around and shop!
Fast and cool
Pros: Got a very good deal last week with the coupon, cashback and rebate. Definitely worth the price I paid for it. Seems to overclock to 5870 speeds without much trouble even with stock voltage. I have it 875/1225. Not too bad but it could have been better. Seems those clocks are the norm without voltage tweaks and exotic cooling. Stays nice and cool. Barely hits 70C at load. Oh and FAST.....
Cons: Drivers... It's just not fine tuned as Nvidia cards. GPU scaling @ 1080P for dx10 title is broken since CCC 10.2. It either starts at 24hz or 50hz depending on the drivers. If you haven't owned ATI/AMD cards before vsync is broken in CCC. You have to use D3DOVERRider to force vsync on.
Overall Review: If you want to overclock past 775/1125 you need to download RBE (radeon bios editor) and edit your dumped bios and flash it to override CCC lock. This is the best way without losing your Power Play features.
To the certifed tech
Pros: I've owned this board since the release. not a single hick up. Runs 24/7 without interruptions. Solid board for HTPC or even a power user.
Cons: A little expensive for a small board but well worth the price as it has 8 phase, solid caps, and USB 3. I would have liked extra usb brackets. The onboard sound has a problem with Battlefield 2 and windows 7. It's a known problem with some sound cards with this game. In win XP you can turn off acceleration to get around the problem but vista and windows 7 have eliminated this feature. Bad company 2 might have this problem with this board as it's the based on the same upgraded engine. I don't have Bad Company 2 so I can't comment.
Overall Review: To the certified tech. From what you are describing it doesn't sound like a motherboard problem. Just because the screen goes blank in bios does not mean there's fault with the motherboard. Since you are certified tech, did you actually take everything out of your board and eliminate 1 problem at a time? A smart tech would only leave 1 memory stick and video card attached to the motherboard. If you have an i3 use the onboard video to eliminate the video card. It's most likely your memory, video, power supply, or user error. It always is. A board either post and work or they don't and not something in between. You get warranty service from Asus and you still aren't satisfied? I suppose Asus can't satisfy them all. :/
Antec budget case keeps it cool
Pros: Antec makes sturdy functional cases and have been making cases long as I remember. This 200 case seems like a bite off the 300 case. Almost exact same feature except this one comes with hot swappable 2.5 sata drives like the newer higher Antec models. The fact that this case comes with 2 huge fans on top and massive mesh filter that draws air in makes this case only couple of degrees warmer than having side panel off. After I swapped my old computer parts into this case my video card dropped the temperature the most. It used to idle near 60C now it idles @ 45-50C depending on ambient temperature.
Cons: My old Antec had drive latches and even a locking door with a key where you could slide in and out and a locking mechanism and this uses just screws like older cases. A bit backwards if you ask me. Can't say this is the best looking case. It's a medium tall black box.
Overall Review: This is your basic no frills Antec case. If you have owned Antec you know you are getting good stuff and not some 2nd rate knock offs. Quality seems to have toned down from these newer cases but the new features and awesome cooling make it worth while. Definitely worth the $35 that I paid and then some.
