A great all-around notebook

ASUS R1F-K018T 1GB Memory 13.3" 1280 x 800 Tablet PC Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
ASUS R1F-K018T 1GB Memory 13.3" 1280 x 800 Tablet PC Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Pros: Lightweight, sturdy construction, lots of extras(bag, mouse, etc), reliable performance, ease of upgrade, XP not Vista, good screen, good tablet response, good keyboard, great touchpad, good for 2d games, not half bad at 4 year old 3d games, decent software (some of which can and should be removed, but nero is fine and most of the stuff is useful to some extent), good DVD burner, great screen (even with the graininess of the digitizer over it, watching full screen movies/tv is great).

Cons: After a month and a half, I honestly can't find any cons. The fingerprint reader can be a bit touchy, but it generally works (and the errors of 'too fast', 'too short', etc. help you correct it) and the far more expensive finger print access control readers where I work are just as if not touchier. After some initial break in, the screen hinge/swivel does appear to be loosening up just a bit, but it hasn't flaked out, just broken in. The overall construction is quite solid.

Overall Review: I bought a 1GB ram stick and a 7200rpm HDD along with it; the extra gig of ram helps (the 1GB it comes with is just one slot). The 7200rpm HDD creates a hotspot under my left hand and regularly hovers near 45c. I swapped it the 2nd day so I can't say how hot the original (also Seagate) gets, but I'll live with the slightly bumped performance and heat issues. The laptop bag that comes with it is quite a nice extra, as are all the other accessories. However, it's little more than a bag for the laptop, power cable, mouse, etc. I tried cramming one of my school books in it and it doubled the weight and made me nervous about putting too much pressure on the laptop. That being said, it still is a nice little bag if you just need the laptop and little else. The packaging is quite extravagant, obviously meant for business people as a presentation case type thing. It's been great the last couple months, but I wouldn't expect anything less from ASUS. Where's the option for 6 eggs?

It works well

D-Link DWL-G730AP High Speed Wireless Pocket Router/AP
D-Link DWL-G730AP High Speed Wireless Pocket Router/AP

Pros: Signal strength within my rather small apartment is always rated as 'excellent' by my laptop. Setup was pretty standard internet-page based. The hardswitch on the bottom for ap/router/bridge is nice as I just wanted it for an AP (already have a router). It's absolutely dinky in size. The 'travel' case and stuff that comes with it would be nice if I was traveling, but I just wanted something small and cheap that didn't have wasted ports on it. The 'wizard' in the config webpage promotes generally good wifi security in making you change the admin password, ssid, and stuff.

Cons: It needed a couple of hard resets in the config process to get it up and running, but once it was up it's worked just fine for the last 4 days.

Overall Review: I bought this to be a small wifi ap for my already wired network. I set the switch on the bottom to "AP" and plugged it into the switch that my router/firewall computer serves. The default ip of 192.168.0.30 is nice in that it didn't automatically assume that it was the only box in my network, and the default DHCP range of 192.168.0.100-whatever works well with all the hard-coded IPs I've already set up. Though this is the first wifi product I've bought, I'm quite familiar with the concepts and WPA2 setup with ssid masking and MAC filtering were quite easy to set up.

Mmmmmm cores

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM2 125W Processor - ADX6000CZBOX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM2 125W Processor - ADX6000CZBOX

Pros: It runs fast. I doubled my year-old WCG scores in under a month and a half. I've been running it at full tilt since July 07 without issue, it just keeps churning away. The stock hsf is quite robust looking and seems to collect dust less than previous aftermarket coolers for lesser processors. Even though it's a slim (70mm?) fan, it's not noisy and with the heatpipes does a good job. Overall it's just plain blazing fast at everything. Now I curse at other 'normal' computers for taking too long to do things.

Cons: None

Overall Review: It runs a bit warm, but if I kill boinc for a bit it'll cool down pretty quick. It's averaging in the 40c range, occasionally hitting 55c on a hot day. If I were to hook up my old watercooling setup and/or buy an aftermarket cooler, I'm sure it'd run lower, but I'm not overclocking so I'm not that concerned.

More than you pay for

Vantec NexStar SX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Metallic Silver) - Model NST-285S2-SL
Vantec NexStar SX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Metallic Silver) - Model NST-285S2-SL

Pros: This is not your standard external enclosure. It comes with a mini phillips head screwdriver and a palm-pilot type carrying case. The cable is dual headed with a passthrough on the second connector. Installation was fairly easy but the covers are a bit tight (which is good in my book) and snap on with press-in buttons on the side of the case. Excellent buy!

Cons: none, this thing rocks!

Overall Review: The packaging is nice and the extras in the box make it very nice. The mini screwdriver that came with it now lives in my laptop bag cause it's perfect for the ram cover and the hdd bay screws

It works

G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model F2-5300PHU1-1GBSA
G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model F2-5300PHU1-1GBSA

Pros: It works. The newegg ram configuration dohickey picked it as compatable with my Asus R1F, which it is. Installation was as easy as adding ram should be (though that says more about the laptop than the RAM itself).

Cons: None noted so far.

Overall Review: It snapped right in and works like a charm.

It works

Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021AS 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021AS 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's faster than the 5400rpm seagate SATA drive that came in my Asus R1F.

Cons: none noted

Overall Review: Others have mentioned heat, I haven't noticed it. In fact, I noticed more heat with the 80gb 5400 that this replaced. The swap was quick and easy and I got to experience the freshly-opened-anti-static-bag smell :)
