Bootable; needs external power
Pros: Lightweight, somewhat sturdy. Bootable!
Cons: Needs external power -- USB power is not enough.
Overall Review: The product description didn't say whether or not this drive could boot a computer, and whether it could do so with just USB power. While I'm pleased the drive boots fine (loaded Vista with nary an issue), the drive audibly tried to work under just USB power when I unplugged the AC adapter but couldn't get going. So, it's a good drive (and the AC adapter is smaller than most I've seen), but not ideal.
Doesn't work on MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz
Pros: Probably will work fine in other laptops
Cons: Doesn't work in a new MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz laptop.
Overall Review: I wish there were a way to choose "n/a" as a rating. This memory might be great. It just doesn't work in this particular laptop. I know getting memory to work for a Mac's tight specs can be tough, so no hard feelings.
Works perfectly in Thinkpad T61 laptops
Pros: We ordered more than 40 of these packs, upgrading over 80 Thinkpad T61 machines with 2 GB more each. Not a single dead stick in the whole batch.
Cons: I hate these vacuum-sealed plastic packages they use. Just put them in a small cardboard box.
It boots!
Pros: Bootable! That's all I cared about. Runs fine on USB power, so no need to carry the power cord around -- nice bonus! I didn't know a 4-pin USB device could run off USB power.
Cons: Flimsy construction. If you push down slighty (and I'm gentle) on the drive to keep the drive from moving while closing the drive tray, the drive tray won't fit. Hold the drive by the sides instead.
Overall Review: It's not the fastest drive, but that's fine. I needed an external USB drive to load Vista, and this drive did the task. Vista recognized the drive with no problems. The drive didn't burn consistently (burnt a coaster right off the bat, then had no problems with the second disc, same media), but it's too soon to tell if the coaster was a fluke, and honestly it's not important to me.
Functionally perfect for me
Pros: No drivers needed for WinXP; worked fine in addition to onboard video. Comes with everything you could need, including a full-height bracket and two DVI-to-VGA adapters. No fan, so no noise!
Cons: The card itself is a little long -- makes things cramped in a tiny system.
Overall Review: I do tech support professionally. I had a client who had a half-height small desktop system (Micron ClientPro 345) that needed a second monitor. This was the only half-height video card Newegg (or anyone else) had. I installed the card, and Windows XP (SP2, patches up to date as of December 2006) recognized the card and installed drivers, without asking for a disk. I'm using the card with an analog-only 17" LCD screen, and it works great. Since I'm using this video card in conjunction with the onboard video, Windows shows in the display properties how I could even hook up a third monitor if I wanted to. What a win! The proprietary connector that then splits into two DVI-I connections worried me at first, but that's how they got a dual-head card into a half-height form factor, and it works fine. I've no idea what kind of performance this card can give for higher end applications, but that wasn't my intention for buying this card.
Cheap, functional dual-head card
Pros: Fanless (silent), completely functional dual-head card. Reviews of other cheap cards scared me off, with stories of no DVI-A (I needed to hook up two VGA LCD monitors). This card delivered.
Cons: No DVI-to-VGA adapter, but for as cheap as this card was, I was fine with getting my own adapter. The driver interface isn't as intuitive as I'd like, but that's nitpicking.
Overall Review: I only needed dual-head functionality. I've no idea (and don't care) about performance other than it works great with two monitors using MS Windows, both in mirrored mode and with an extended desktop across both monitors.
