It works. It's not overly noisy. It's fast
Pros: They work. They both worked and are performing perfectly. They are not as noisy as previous models. They work faster consistently. They are definitely an improvement.
Cons: It does always weird me out getting these WD drives and noticing them preform differently. One is actually noticeably faster than the other for reading/writing.
Overall Review: I haven't had the best of luck with WD over the years, but I have had good experience with the WD gold lineups. I bought two of these 10 TB Gold Drives.
working but concerned
Pros: *They work (they all work so far) *They are all performing decently quick
Cons: These are unusually loud with an annoying high pitch sound. But not ALL of them, I'd say about every 2nd or 3rd disk has this. You can also clearly hear it seeking, sounds like a scratching sound. I have no doubt I'll be asking for / and denied warranty on all of the noise maker disks soon enough. I've been down this road with WD where they are making strange noises and fail before warranty period is up. They are working properly at the moment so there is nothing to do.
Overall Review: The sound is really quite annoying.... But only one some of the disks. If you have to spend hours around the equipment these are probably not the disks for you. I've been having a lot of issues with WD disks lately and I'm hoping these will prove better. The performance is where it needs to be (so far) but I'm weary as they are not all consistent. They each seem to make different pitch noises and have slightly different speeds - doesn't give me confidence. I'll make a point to revisit this if they fail to live up to at least their warranty period. I'll give the benefit of the doubt for now and take off two eggs - one for inconsistency and one for the high pitched noise / scratching sounds.
Terrible Product and Lineup. I shame you Western Digital
Cons: This drive is all around a bad deal. They do not last long, and you will be lucky to get any warranty or support as the Manufacturer doesn't stand by their product.
Overall Review: I've bought at least 10 of these 1TB models and 7 of the 4TB models and I have almost none of them in service today. I started buying some of the WD Black line-up in 2016 and I don't normally bother with warranty or reviews but I wanted to share my experience. Here are the highlights: The first 4 that I bought had one that was DOA The one I bought to replace the DOA died within 6 months WD was easy going at first stating they would replace the drive and then didn't. They then said it was from the ASIA market and wouldn't warranty it. I put together proof that it was not and they threatened me with criminal charges. Randomly 8 months after I moved on I received a random drive from WD in the mail saying they were going to honor the warranty 'this time' but not for any of the other drives. The other 3 drives that were part of that original purchase, no longer had a warranty when I checked on the website despite the fact that they did prior to the situation in the first place. All 3 of those original drives are now dead and it's been nearly 3 years. I was happy with the performance of those drives for a short time. After the warranty debacle and moved on to other lineups and manufacturers. I decided to buy some more black edition drives recently and definitely regret giving the line-up another chance since none of them perform well or consistently and I've had strange data corruption issues despite the drives SMART stating everything is good .... I have a large amount of GOLD and RED WD drives and have not had an issue with those yet. They all came with 5 year warranties but I'm sure the amount of my time Western Digital would waste during the warranty process would make it less costly to simple buy new drives. Shame on Western Digital for their terrible product, product support, customer service, general attitude, and lack of integrity. I have an entire shelf full of drives that have died on me over the years or have just been replaced. Most of them are either WD or Seagate. The vast majority of WD drives never lived up to their expected service life while most of all the other ones did. I don't feel like that is a coincidence.
Pros: I felt like I was gambling buying this but I was not disappointed. It works. It's quiet. The quality is perfect for the price.
Cons: The mounting holes do not line up with a standard rack. This was my only gripe with this product. I drilled new holes and threaded them just to mount this unit, which I did not enjoy doing.
Overall Review: Have spare hard drive screws in case your careless like me and lose yours. Thankfully I have bags of them just sitting on my shelf (I had no idea what they were good for until I bought this unit and lost the bag of screws that come with the unit)
Pros: It worked great out of the box with FreeBSD. No special setup, just booted up and started using it. My motherboard is able to boot from it which was an unexpected treat.
Cons: I thought I was buying a new product not a refurbished or openbox unit. It was packaged well however the seals were broken and it was clear it was taken out of it's ESD bag and then repackaged, minus one egg for this.
Overall Review: It's a shame they aren't currently stocked. I'd definitely consider buying another one of these.
