AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition - Phenom II X3 Heka Triple-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM3 95W Processor - HDZ720WFK3DGI
AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition - Phenom II X3 Heka Triple-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM3 95W Processor - HDZ720WFK3DGI

Pros: I made my computer rebuild based upon a build guide from the folks at anantech for a mid range AMD machine. Per those specs, I purchased the Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P board, the Heka Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition CPU, the Gskill Ripsaw F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) 2x2gb ram, the POWERCOLOR AX4850 1GBD3-PH Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support (they recommended the 512k but for $10 more, got one gig, Video and Win 7 Pro -64. This board and CPU quickly unlocked the X3 into a Phenom II x4 BE 920 processor. To unlock, go into Bios, MB Intell Tweaker, set CPU voltage control to 1.400v (to power the 4th core), enter Advanc Clock Calibration, set EC Firmware to Hybrid, set Adv Clock Calib to All Cores, and Value of (all cores) to +4%. Then verify with CPUid that you now have a quad.

Cons: Make sure you plug power into ATX port and also the ATX_12v-2x4 or you will not get a post, beep, nadda. The ATX_12v-2x4 was hard to access once the CPU sink fan was in place. I have a huge case and I can imagine that those with smaller cases might be cramped to access the six inner sata ports. Guys, read the manual before you complain about dead boards, CPUs, etc. or the fact it does not work with nvidia graphics. It is an ATI graphic board because Gigabyte went with the best graphics manufacturer in the market right now to avoid other hassles.

Overall Review: Have not done much overclocking yet as still setting up my system software, but I am stable at DDR1333 with manual timing of 7-7-7-21-2T, per memtest 84 and primes 95. Use prime95 v25.9 build 4 to stress all 4 cores at the same time in 64 bit. With no overclocking, my Win Experience Index is 7.2 processor, 7.5 ram, 7.3 on graphic and gaming graphic. Be sure to download AMD overdrive.

Very Impressive

Klipsch Synergy Sub12 12" 300W High Gloss Black Subwoofer Single
Klipsch Synergy Sub12 12" 300W High Gloss Black Subwoofer Single

Pros: In regards to the room size, I have a very open floor plan, with nine foot high ceilings in my living room and connected kitchen. The living room opens to an entry way with a two story high ceiling leading to an upper loft and second floor. The living room itself is probably 16 by 16 foot. For these reasons, I felt that I did not want to go with less than a 12 inch sub. I narrowed my choices down to the Polk PSW505 12" and the Klipsch Synergy Sub12. I debated for several weeks weighing things such as Polk’s lower cost, fine reputation among its customers and the reported better speaker cabinet built out of real wood. On the flip side, I really liked Klipsch’s reputation for music quality, the non directional bass feel and the greater power and lower bass range of the Klipsch. I presume I would have been happy with either choice but when the Klipsch went on sale for within $20 of the Polk, I decided to go with the Klipsch as I had placed a priority on non directional bass.

Cons: This thing as big as a small shipping trunk. However, you need a large cabinet to hold this large downfiring sub.

Overall Review: I immediately checked for cracked cabinet feet that some customers have reported but I had no such issues. My first test of the sub was playing a blue ray version of the train movie Unstoppable. I could very easily feel the train not only in my living room but also upstairs as well and the sound was incredible. I then turned on a March Madness basketball game. I found myself smiling when I could feel the ball hitting the back rim or bouncing across the court floor while I stood in my kitchen. Finally, I turned on Pandora to listen to music. All I can say is that I am very impressed with the results. I know that some guys have said their wives do not like their subwoofers. I can tell you that is not the case with my wife. She is equally appreciative of the results from the sub as I am. I am currently have the sub attached to a sound bar. At some point in the future I will replace that sound bar with a receiver and the Klipsch Synergy subpanel speaker system.

Cons: The ATX_12v_2x4 power plug in port was hard to get to after my heatsink was installed. I have a huge case. I could see where others with a smaller case might have difficulty accessing their six sata ports on the inside edge of the board once installed. Guys, read the manual before you complain about dead boards, CPUs, etc. or the fact it does not work with nvidia graphics. Very nice

Acer Laptop Aspire AMD Athlon X2 QL-62 (2.00GHz) 3GB Memory 320GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G 14.1" Windows Vista Home Premium AS4530-6823

Pros: Once you clean off the garbage, you have a very nice machine, even with vista. For those who do not own Registry Mechanic, I highly recommend it. As soon as I burned the DVD backups, I ran registry mechanic and discovered the machine came with 137 registry errors. Very common for new machines as one software install tends to overwrite part of another's registry needs or shares the DLL. After I removed the bloatware, another 80 errors with RM removed quickly. I do not like Macaffe so I installed BitDefender instead. Some talk about short battery life. Remember to condition the battery as Acer recommends, by fully charging the battery and then fully draining the battery three times. This prepares the battery for use. It does seem to be slower than my Dell to recharge when running apps. Great screen and keyboard, with nice firmness. Computer comes with an unused ExpressCard/54 slot. Power cord as it enters the computer is strong reinforced L-shape cord.

Cons: I had difficulty at first in making the back up DVD which you should do before anything else. I burned the first DVD but when it began to verify it burned correctly, it gave me an error 204. I wasted another DVD and got the same result. Turns out the problem is that I was using 4x DVD-R single layer and it wanted dual layer if using 4x. No where in the Acer material could I find a list of what DVDs and CD would work on the burner. I finally went back to the Newegg specifications for this machine and found the list of supported formats. Started to burn avail CDs instead but they were taking 13 minutes each and I needed 13. After waiting for the 5th one, I threw them away and purchased correct format DVDs which worked quickly. Acer should have given 4gig of ram but probably wanted to seem some marketing differences for their next model up. It would have been cheap enough for the 2nd chip to be a 2gig as well. Sounds seems slightly more tinty than my dell but not bad.

Overall Review: I really love the light weight computer and the strength of the case and keyboard. My Dell had two exhaust vents and this only has one so I was concerned about the possibility of this machine getting hot but not a big problem that I can tell. The software in the computer is dated Feb 09 which means you need to run updates as soon as you make your system backups and make sure you have a good anti virus program in place. I like AVG or BitDefender. Consider installing Belarc Advisor for free, gives great deals about your machine, including specs, software keys for all your software, etc., in one list. I WOULD BUY THIS MACHINE AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT. VERY PLEASED.
