Most Favorable Review

Looks and works like new; it has over 3 years of Power-On Hours.

HGST Ultrastar HE6 HUS726060ALA640 (0F18335) 6TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive
HGST Ultrastar HE6 HUS726060ALA640 (0F18335) 6TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Hard Drive

Pros: I have two of these "Certified Refurbished" 6TB drives that have been working for over a year. They look and work like new. They are silent when they idle, but have a noticeable clicking during seeks; I wouldn't use these for editing audio.

Cons: They have over 3 years of SMART "Power-On Hours."

Overall Review: goHardDrive is an excellent reseller to do business with. Some of these resellers make using these used drives easier to return if there is a problem than with most new hard drive manufacturers.

Most Critical Review

Beware: Grey Market Item from China

ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 USB 3.1 uATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 USB 3.1 uATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I don't read Chinese.

Cons: I purchased this item from Corn Electronics, and it is a grey market item from China. The writing on the box is in Chinese. The motherboard manual is written in Chinese. It took more than two weeks to arrive, and originated in Shanghai, China.

Overall Review: While I don't see any other LGA 1150 Intel motherboards on Newegg, I did purchase a Q87M-E/CSM motherboard for $159- on the big A site.

Nice quiet CMR drive with advanced format sectors and power disable.

HGST Ultrastar He12 HUH721212ALN600 12TB 3.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive 0F30141
HGST Ultrastar He12 HUH721212ALN600 12TB 3.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive 0F30141

Pros: The drive I received was a DC HC520. All 500 series drives are CMR (conventional magnetic recording drives); they are not SMR (shingled magnetic recording) drives.

Cons: No power disable cable is provided. This is a power disable drive. If you aren't familiar with power disable drives, you need a molex-to-SATA or a SATA-to-SATA power disable cable if your power supply doesn't provide a SATA connection with power disable capability. It's a fairly new feature, so just make sure you get yourself a power disable cable or your drive won't spin up. Also this is an advanced format drive (4k sectors). Most motherboards today with UEFI support this feature. This feature may not be supported on older BIOS motherboards.

Overall Review: The drive runs great, and the reseller that I bought this from, goHardDrive, has always provided excellent customer service.

Excellent drives.

HGST/WD Ultrastar DC HC510 10TB SATA 6Gb/s 3.5" HDD - HUH721010ALE600 (0F27452)
HGST/WD Ultrastar DC HC510 10TB SATA 6Gb/s 3.5" HDD - HUH721010ALE600 (0F27452)

Pros: HGST drives are the quietest 7200 rpm drives in the industry. While these 10TB drives are considered and in-between drive, and are not purchased by companies like Backblaze; therefore, can't be used for their reliability statistics. Still their drives have a great reputation in the data center industry.

Cons: Because these are an extension the 8TB drive technology, their magnetic grain's ability to hold data for the long-tem is a concern. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if these drives hold data longer than 10 years.

Overall Review: I purchased this drive from ServerPartDeals which offers awesome customer service. The drive came with a SATA-to-SATA power disable cable for most people who don't have a power supply with the power disable feature. ServerPartDeals provides a 3-year warranty. You can request their warranty certificate by email.

Tested on MemTest86 ver. 6.2

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Low Profile Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D1609ES2LX0
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Low Profile Desktop Memory Model BLS2K8G3D1609ES2LX0

Pros: I purchased two sets of these DIMMs for 32 GBs total. I tested them on two motherboards; an Asus Q87M-E/CSM and an Asus Gryphon Z87. Because Intel has incorporated the IVM (Integrated VRM (voltage regulator module)) into the Haswell chips, the CPU runs cooler with lower voltage DIMMs. All four DIMMs work at 9-9-9-24 and use 1.37-1.375 volts whether the BIOS is set to use XMP or not. Both Asus MBs found, and correctly configured the memory before I set them to use XMP.

Cons: These 2 sets of DIMMs work perfectly together; sweet perfection.

Overall Review: I have built many PCs in my life--maybe a hundred or more. I have also been in charge of hundreds of (maybe close to a thousand) PCs and servers. I have come across bad memory from almost all memory module makers that I have used including G.SKILL and Crucial, but Crucial, by far, has the best support and return policies in the U.S.; I can't speak for the support in other countries. I don't recall ever seeing DRAM ever go bad after more than an hour of MemTest; I don't see any need for the crazy 12 hour torture tests that some people do. Although sometimes I let MemTest continue to finish (like I did this time) if it does its work overnight or if I leave it alone while I do something else.

A solid choice

SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW
SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: Fast access speeds of all Samsung drives -- especially of small random data. Doesn't have some of the controller problems of Sandforce drives. Magician s/w is very good, but could use improvement.

Cons: Skip Samsung's clone madness, and download your own free backup s/w to clone your drive. Macrium Reflect Free or EaseUS Todo Backup Free from Cnet are good choices. Low write speeds. Buy the 250 GB drive or the 840 pro series if you need or want faster write speeds. Their software is very good, but isn't the most intuitive -- it could use some improvement. You'll need to move up in capacity or to the "Pro" series to get faster drives or drives with more endurance.

Overall Review: Hopefully their firmware issues have all been settled by now.
