Good hardware, just ignore the software

KWORLD ATSC 340U Dongle ATSC TV USB Stick ATSC 340U USB 2.0 Interface
KWORLD ATSC 340U Dongle ATSC TV USB Stick ATSC 340U USB 2.0 Interface

Pros: Cheap price, works well with Vista, works well with XP, 3rd party software smooths over the difficulties with bundled software, I was able to pick up channels even more clearly with my tuner than with my 4' antenna and ATSC converter.

Cons: The bundled software sucks and doesn't even pick up the device (i was about to send it back to newegg before I found GB-PVR on a freeware website and got it to work), a little heavy for the USB port so it gets disconnected frequently on my Ideapad Y510. Use GB-PVR or Windows Media Center instead. Just download the device driver from the Kworld website (just look on the box and you will find the address) then you configure the card and scan for channels).

Overall Review: I'll probably get a USB extender for this thing because of the frequent disconnection (although this isn't a problem with my desktop, just my Ideapad). Just use GB-PVR (you can find it for free on majorgeeks) or Windows Media Center (i can't vouch for the XP version of Media center but the Vista 32 bit version works fine). A hint for installing the driver easily in Vista 32 bit, connect the tuner then start up Windows Media Center, then put the included disc in and then it'll pick up the tuner. After that, just upgrade the driver to the K-world one and you are set. Expect blocky images and bad image quality when you are getting a bad signal, this is normal with ATSC (the new digital standard)

Makes it past a year -_-

SanDisk 1.8" Black 4GB MP3 Player Sansa e260
SanDisk 1.8" Black 4GB MP3 Player Sansa e260

Pros: Great price, small, durable but....

Cons: okay, this player can endure drops but before i even dropped it, this thing started giving me trouble. First, it would "lose" my WMA music file licenses requiring me to format it several times before it wouldn't lose th license after one play then next, it's firmware crashed on a regular basis then after that, it completely died just one month outside of warranty and went into a continuous reboot and when i let it die and recharged it, it just picked up where it started despite my emergency recovery of it's firmware. I suspect that the issue was flash memory failure and that is unacceptable at that point, low rez screen is really hard to make out. Don't think that this thing died because i abused it, i wasn't all that rough on it, i just dropped it a few times at say about 3' at the most but otherwise, i kept it in reasonably good shape.

Overall Review: This was pathetic, do not buy, even rockbox wasn't able to save this thing from being pathetic. I never thought that i would endorse a Microsoft product but get a Zune. I have a Zune and it works flawlessly but wait until september 16 2008 to get one, that is when the third gen ones are coming out :).

Awesome monitor, buy it =D

ASUS VH236H Black 23" Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ Speakers 300 cd/m2 20000 :1 (ASCR)
ASUS VH236H Black 23" Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ Speakers 300 cd/m2 20000 :1 (ASCR)

Pros: Beautiful, sleek, could play Forza 2 and several FPSes on with no signs of ghosting or other issues, beautiful colors

Cons: one stuck pixel but that's to be expected on high rez LCD monitors these days and i've never gotten an LCD display that didn't have at least one and it's not that noticeable, it's just a white one so it often just blends in and isn't worth worrying about

Overall Review: It's a nice monitor and my first Asus product and I'm sold on Asus now, certainly worth the price, it took me under 5 minutes to set up, I use this with my Xbox 360 and it looks stunning. Some people complain about the speakers but for casual use, it's fine. Sure, the speakers aren't Dolby but they beat my old TV that this in combination with my Windows Media Center PC is replacing. You may want to wipe the screen before you use it since there were little black bits that seemed like just shaved plastic that were on the screen, they weren't coating the screen but they were like little scraps here and there.

The best MP3 player i've ever owned

Microsoft Zune 1.8" Black 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player
Microsoft Zune 1.8" Black 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player

Pros: Nice screen, durable, gets good battery life, syncs with Xbox 360 nicely, Zune market place works well, Zune software easy to navigate, wireless sync, earphones lasted me longer than any other pair i've ever owned (i've owned Sony, Philips, and a set of iPod earphones and these have lasted me slightly longer than the Sony earphones), easy to use interface on the player itself, Microsoft firmware updates add new features that are actually useful like wireless sync

Cons: like the iPod, the battery isn't user replaceable which is annoying when you have a tendancy to overcharge the battery like if you sync it with the Xbox 360 but this problem has lessened since I have been able to sync it to my PC less by using wireless sync but this problem isn't exclusive to the Zune, the iPod has the same issue

Overall Review: This thing is insanely durable, both me and a friend of mine have had our Zunes for over a year and we've both put these things in our pockets with our keys and still, not a single scratch or hint of one after a year whereas my sansa scratched easy from day one and died a horrible death. Do yourself a favour, get it and a set of the premium earphones (the standard earphones are just as good as the iPod stock headphones but that's the issue, they are stock quality, the premium ones are very good for the price and worth your money)

Okay cam but be warned

FUJIFILM FinePix J10 Black 8.0 MP 3X Optical Zoom Digital Camera
FUJIFILM FinePix J10 Black 8.0 MP 3X Optical Zoom Digital Camera

Pros: Cheap, good pictures in fair light, can capture a moving fan blade as though is standing still in daylight but...

Cons: in dark conditions, the image quality plummets. My images in darker conditions blur horribly even with image stabilization mode and I wasn't moving it to get the shots, I was just holding it in my hands and that alone caused the images to blur beyond all recognition. Avoid this cam at all costs if you are using bad lighting or have an aversion to flash.

Overall Review: I probably would have gotten another cam if I knew how problematic shooting would be in dark settings. This cam would be a great cam for a young person getting their first digital camera. This cam made me want to go back to my analog cam.

Awesome drive, would buy again

WD My Book Home 750GB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive WDH1CS7500N
WD My Book Home 750GB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive WDH1CS7500N

Pros: Reliable, durable, no corrupt files yet, works nicely with WMC, no driver issues, small, gorgeous drive, 3 year warranty

Cons: Requires AC power, included software is trial only save for drivers, no eSATA cable, no 4 pin firewire cable (6 pin is included though), long backup times (most likely due to Vista's tendancy to compress data as it backs it up rather than low trasfer rates but this isn't certainly a bad thing since it managed to squeeze 200GB of data down to 100GB on my drive), comes formatted as FAT (re-formatting as NTFS takes about 30 seconds with the quick format in Vista so it's not much of an issue)

Overall Review: All in all, a great drive. The software included is not really that much better than the backup system utility in Windows Vista so i just use Vista's backup utility. The warranty is longer than i thought (i thought that it was 1 year but it turns out that this baby has a 3 year), the drive has been on my desk which is shaken constantly and it is doing just fine, not a single sign of problems 3 weeks in. Backup of 200GB of data took me 6 hours but it is likely due to Vista's backup utility compressing data before it threw it onto the drive instead of just throwing it on there as is since i was getting 30 Megabyte/second transfer rates over USB 2.0 when it was transferring then it seemed to be having idle moments. I probably will get a Seagate drive to go alongside this drive and whichever drive lasts longer will likely become my brand of choice but if all goes well with this drive, i'll probably buy WD drives from now on.
