So nice - the way things should work

brother HL Series HL-2170W Workgroup Up to 23 ppm Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer
brother HL Series HL-2170W Workgroup Up to 23 ppm Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer

Pros: Out of box and up in 10 minutes. I never want to install proprietary software from manufacturers because they always just end up mucking up the works. 1. set everything up. 2. hook up ethernet cable. 3. power on. 4. Look in DHCP server to find IP. 5. web browser to IP address. 6. username: admin / password: access. 7. setup wifi from web admin page. 8. change password from admin page. 9. unplug ethernet cable The unit will DHCP anaddress whenever the ethernet is in and it will not enable the wifi until you remove the ethernet, at least not the first time. I don't know if it turns it off again when you insert it.

Cons: Not realy a con but to install on XP SP3 no distro cd you need to download the driver from the brother web site for xp.

Overall Review: All basic drivers, the windows7 and the basix XP from brother web site have full control, including "toner save"

Most Critical Review

Works great for Win7 32/64 not so much in ESXi as datastore

Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDRE1TB
Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 2.5" 1TB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDRE1TB

Pros: Very fast for the price. Tech support calls are answered by a human that speaks native English. Works perfectly in Windows 7 64 and 32, not so much in ESXi 5.5 U2.

Cons: Installed in multiple test VMware esxi servers and all fail in the same way. Just place a large VM on a Reactor 1TB datastore then "clone" the VM to another Reactor 1TB datastore, or the same datastore and after about 5 minutes the source (read) drive will become inactive and will require the drive be power cycled (hot power cycle works as well as a system shutdown). This also happens when a VM guest has a large data drive with lots of small files and you copy those files to another virtual drive. The entire datastore holding the VM will become inactive until the Reactor is power cycled. Note. you do not have to power cycle the system, just the drive. To verify this was a problem with the drive I purchased a SAMSUNG 840 EVO 1TB drive and did the same tests. The SAMSUNG 840 EVO does not act this way under the exact same test system and test files.

Overall Review: Mushkin tech support is extremely helpful, as much as they can be, and are very available and do care. But once I explained this was an issue with ESXi (linux) we kind of got out of their comfort zone. Though I can understand my use for this drive is not typical, an SATA drive should work like an SATA drive. It shouldn't matter what operating system is used. Mushkin tech support suggested an issue with ESXi drivers, but SATA is SATA, there are no "Mushkin" drivers to check in ESXi and those same drivers work with the SAMSUNG 840 EVO 1TB. It was also suggested I update the firmware on this drive and was directed to Mushkin 's firmware download. After a few days of fighting with the firmware they offer I called back to discover this "Reactor" drive is new and they do not have updated firmware and that the "firmware" on the drive was provided by "silicon motion", the people who sold Mushkin the sm2246en controller inside the drive. So... anyone want to buy 5 only slightly used "Mushkin Enhanced Reactor MKNSSDRE1TB 2.5" 1TB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)" drives?
