Great Value Monitor

Asus VH238H Black 23" Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50,000,000:1
Asus VH238H Black 23" Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50,000,000:1

Pros: - More calibration controls than most monitors. - Vivid picture - Great price for the quality - Tracks motion fairly well, no ghosting. - Good monitor choice for gaming and movie watching.

Cons: - Out of box display settings are horrendous. Requires a lot of thoughtful calibration. - OSD a bit of a pain - Nitpicky image concerns: contrast tends to run a bit high, some LED bleed-through in dark images (no halo's though). Still, bleed-though is an inherent characteristic of LED LCD displays.

Overall Review: Used with Xbox360 and PC RTS, FPS games primarily. I had a Viewsonic 22" VX model and this is a considerable upgrade. Image quality is much higher, contrast is deeper, and allows for finer calibration. For the price one wouldn't have anything to complain about. On the note of calibration - I strongly recommend using a piece of freeware called LutCurve for PC use. Use a calibration dvd or THX certified movie to calibrate for use with other sources (IE: game system).

Most Critical Review

A keyboard of preference

Logitech G510 Keyboard
Logitech G510 Keyboard

Pros: - Tactile response to typing - Lighting is cool, if a bit subdued - Tons of macro keys, good for Windows shortcuts - gaming switch disables accidental 'win' key presses - sturdy construction - software is fun to play with

Cons: - typing is an acquired taste, harder to press keys than on other boards. Give it a couple days to get used to, but it's satisfying after you do. (-1 egg for learning curve) - you might miss ergonomics if you're used to that kind of thing - Space bar issue is highly prevalent and very annoying (see other thoughts) (-1 egg for hardware issue)

Overall Review: If you buy this board, you will almost certainly run in to the dreaded space bar issue. However, I believe this mostly stems from getting used to typing on this keyboard. It requires a harder key press than what you're used to. Thus, the space bar may not always register, or double-tap. It's dumb, I mean really dumb, but you have to "break in" your keyboard's space bar. Go tap happy during load times during games, or whenever you aren't using it. Just like a new pair of shoes, you have to work out the stiffness through use. You really shouldn't have to do this, but you do. It's the biggest drawback of this otherwise very cool keyboard.

Twice the value, double the fun

Insten 675513 6 ft. Black HDMI® to HDMI® Cable Lot x 2 Bundle Kit Set Male to Male
Insten 675513 6 ft. Black HDMI® to HDMI® Cable Lot x 2 Bundle Kit Set Male to Male

Pros: Nothing terribly important to note other than they work exactly like they're supposed to.The fact that you get two cables in the same shipment means you actually pay $4 / cable (as of this writing). The aesthetics of the cable may be understated, but its performance is every bit as good as any other high-quality cable out there.

Cons: None to speak of. They work and perform well.

Overall Review: This 2-cable package is ideal for owners who wish to keep the audio and video aspects of HDMI separate; or, want to use 3D, but don't have a capable receiver. In my case, I just needed a couple of cables.

Monopolizing Security

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 - 3 PCs / 2 Years
Bitdefender Total Security 2013 - 3 PCs / 2 Years

Pros: + Fantastic virus-busting performance + Ability to be proactive without being entirely paranoid (though it can be if you want it to) + Online storage + Free basic ID protection + Practical and hassle-free firewall + No alerts via game mode or autopilot. Keeps you safe without being annoying about it. + Lots of free optional security features like facebook and online payments.

Cons: - A bit resource heavy, low-mid range machines may have trouble with it. - The interface needs a little tweaking. The default view makes you think there's fewer configurable options than there are. - Firewall is not user-friendly. To the savvy user, it's fine, but to the layman might be hard to decipher. - High price outside of deals and discounts.

Overall Review: I love BitDefender and have been using it since I first discovered it a few years ago. Each iteration is a respectable step-up from the version previous. The jump from 2012 to 2013 wasn't a very big difference, however. Where it really excels is being effective without being in-your-face about it. I've used anti-viruses in the past that will notify you about every little thing, BitDefender will just sit quietly in the corner of your desktop and let you know via a quaint little widget that something happened. At a glance you can look at resource use, security alerts, and if anything needs your attention. Users of mid-grade desktops or laptops may want to stick with less resource intensive options like the Internet Security edition. A good amount of installed memory is recommended (4GB and up. It'll run fine with much less of course, but to keep it from bogging down the system during heavy use, more is always better). A few notes about optional services. For one, there's a lot. Services like Facebook/Twitter protection are there, but if you protect your account with a strong password, this is really superfluous. The BitDefender web screen is nice without being too obtrusive - warning you of known dangerous web pages. There's an online vault of sorts that lets you use their servers to store crucial data you can access from anywhere provided you create a free profile. The default is 2GB, which is plenty for photos or documents you really don't want to lose, but there are upgraded options for a premium. Same goes for ID Theft protection. A very, very basic option is there, but I would recommend a dedicated service if you're into that kind of thing. About the price, if you can catch a deep, deep discount like I did through buying the disc, do it. The retail price of this very same package is many times what I paid for it ($20). Lastly the interface by default is, well, a little ineffective. When you get in to the settings of a particular component it's all good and well, but you have to find the less-obvious scroll bar to find all your options. There's a grid view that's much better, but until you find it or the scroll bar, BitDefender's less used options are obscured from your knowledge.

Great Value

EVGA SuperClocked 02G-P4-2662-KR G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
EVGA SuperClocked 02G-P4-2662-KR G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Pros: + For single monitor, 1920x1080 gaming, it has superb performance. + PrecisionX software is simple and intuitive + Included fans are quiet until around 75%. + Stable drivers means fewer game crashes and glitches.

Cons: - HDMI connection isn't obvious, but not worth knocking an egg for. - No auto-overclock in the PrecisionX software, or at least that I could tell. Again, very very minor.

Overall Review: As most pc games these days are simply back-ports of Xbox games with an extra graphical option or two, you needn't go much further than the GeForce 660. Even with demanding games like Crysis, this card does pretty well. Not spectacular mind you, but even at lower settings these games look FAR better than any console game at the moment. - A note on cooling, make sure you keep some air flow around this card as it does get a bit warm under load. The fans do a great job of keeping the card itself cool, but the heat it puts off might affect nearby components if you have a cramped case or your PCI slots are packed. Food for thought.

ALMOST a dream

Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: + Massive amounts of room to work. + Lots of cable management options, easily the cleanest install + Separate chamber for PSU was nice + Lots of included goodies like cpu power extension cord, extra screws, sata cables (but for that price, they better be there)

Cons: - Hot swap backplate malfunction can almost ruin your build. IE: if it doesn't work, you only have two other bays to place hard drives. Removing the hot swap plate reveals a plastic housing that can't be removed and is too narrow to fit cables through. - 140mm Fans are really quiet, but are also really weak in performance. I recommend replacing them in an air-cooled system.

Overall Review: I have all the precision and dexterity of a grizzly bear. Even so, the sheer size of the case's interior made building a joy. Routing cables was a breeze, though it quickly becomes cable spaghetti when everything comes together. Consider tying a few things up as you go.
