Just shy of 5

ViewSonic 19" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub Optiquest Series Q19wb
ViewSonic 19" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub Optiquest Series Q19wb

Pros: I was pleasantly surprised by the brightness of this monitor as that was my biggest concern having seen so many other LCD monitors and also having owned several LCD monitors in the past. The fonts are crisp and clear and uniform at any location on the screen. Also the display fills the entire LCD footprint unlike other LCD's I've worked with in the past.

Cons: The biggest con I see is the cheesy speaker that's built-in. I didn't buy this monitor for the speakers but if there's going to be speakers then for goodness sake put something in there that's usable. The built-in speakers are totally useless and can barely hear a peep out of them. Also, I'm having a difficult time adjusting the colors (temp, brightness, contrast) to match what I'm used to with my HP 24" LCD monitor. I can't seem to find the right mix/match of these dials to give me natural color on the screen. So this is turning out to be a small con for having to touch up my photos for instance as the color and tones can't be adjusted correctly with a light meter but then again only if you're really into photography and photo editing will this be of a real concern.

Overall Review: For the price I think this is a 4.5 out of 5. It really isn't bad for home use and worth the money in that respect. Just don't dump your old speakers.

DOA

Cavalry CAXB 2TB USB 2.0 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive CAXB3702T3 Black
Cavalry CAXB 2TB USB 2.0 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive CAXB3702T3 Black

Pros: I like the small footprint and ergonomics of the enclosure. It has a USB and eSATA interface which is very convenient as well as an On/Off switch.

Cons: It was DOA. The drive powers on but is not recognized by any number of different OS's (Windows 7, XP, Linux). After trying to get it to work for a while I noticed a very faint clicking sound from the drive which confirmed the worse for me. The picture of the drive on NewEgg is not reflective of the drive that I received (see other thoughts).

Overall Review: I purchased this drive to replace an acomdata drive that is failing (periodically it stops working). Upon receipt of this drive and discovery that it was DOA I noticed that it had the identical enclosure and instrumentation as the acomdata drive. This includes the molding on the front as well as the instrumentation panel on the back of the drive. They're identical as if this drive enclosure was made by the same manufacturer but stamped with Cavalry instead of acomdata. I've owned one other Cavalry drive and it is exceptionally reliable after a number of years so I ignored the numerous DOA reports on this drive and decided to purchase anyway. It is disappointing that I had to pay for shipping it back and thus losing out on any savings. To add insult to injury the option to go with Newegg for RMA shipping seems to be the slowest on the planet...a week has gone by and still hasn't left my town via UPS. With such high DOA hit-rate this should be removed from Newegg's inventory

DOES NOT WORK on iPhone 4s

2 Port USB Car / Auto Charger Adapter with extra socket for iPhone 4 / iPhone 4S- White
2 Port USB Car / Auto Charger Adapter with extra socket for iPhone 4 / iPhone 4S- White

Pros: Seems to charge various USB based devices

Cons: I bought this specifically to charge my iPhone 4s but it doesn't work. Tried both ports and neither work.

Overall Review: The vendor specifically claims that it works on iPhone4s yet it does not. Stay away from it if your intention is to charge your iPhone 4s. I rated this 1 star specifically because it claimed it can charge an iPhone4s. Had that claim not been there I would hate rated it higher.

Solid

COOLER MASTER RX-250-U2BN-GP Aluminum / Plastic / Metal 2.5" IDE USB 2.0 X-Craft 250 External Hard drive Enclosure
COOLER MASTER RX-250-U2BN-GP Aluminum / Plastic / Metal 2.5" IDE USB 2.0 X-Craft 250 External Hard drive Enclosure

Pros: Installation: Extremely easy. My 100GB Drive plugged right in and powered via USB without a problem (one USB). It came with rubber o-rings which helps in shock and insulating the drive from the case which is excellent. Function: Works, worked well and no problems thus far. Performance: As good as I expected out of my 100GB drive. Look/Feel: Very nice case and practically fits in your pocket. Shiny though susceptible to fingerprints.

Cons: These are minor cons but nonetheless they are what drove me to rate it down to 4 (4.5 wasn't an option) The button: doesn't do anything. Would have been nice if it was an on/off switch. No external Power Supply: I knew that it didn't include one when I bought it but now I'm realizing that I could have used an external PS on several occasions. Now-a-days there are many devices such as DVD players with USB ports. To use this device I would need an external PS.

Overall Review: The carrying case is a bit spacious. I was hoping for a snug small case to carry the drive in but this case is slightly too big. It could be an advantage or disadvantage but it helps to be aware of that. Had they included a power supply this case would have been perfect. It is as if the PS was planned but then was not included in the final release of the product.

Not ready for primetime

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate DVD
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate DVD

Pros: The visuals are appealing. The install went smooth despite one major problem (see cons). After initial install and MS Update all of my hardware (see other thoughts) was recognized without incident. If you know XP you can navigate Vista with little learning curve. You'll have to hunt for some things but you'll eventually find them.

Cons: KB929777 sums it up for me. The install kept crashing. Had to remove memory sticks (less than 3GB), install, then apply patch above, then add memory again. Major oversight. Vista needs so much memory that it isn't uncommon for people to want to load up more memory especially with memory prices now-a-days. Many apps won't work due to lack of support (i.e. don't care who's fault it is, the combination means that it isn't ready). The security "features" are extremely annoying and most of the time worthless (if I'm an administrator then I don't need to confirm that I want to view (not change) "more privileged" settings. The "security" settings will get in your way if you're an experienced power user that you'll be forced to just dump them little by little. I'm at the point where UAC is totally disabled as it got in the way of just about everything I wanted to do. To run privileged apps you have to use (ctrl-shift-ent instead of just ENTER to run an app and may work if you're lucky

Overall Review: I'm running on a Vendor certified Vista ready system (wx9400 HP workstation, 4GB RAM, two dual-core AMD 2.8, NVidia3500, two RAID 1 drives (2x74GB-SAS15K, 2x146GB-SAS10K). You'd think Vista should run without having to reduce mem to less than 3GB first. This is, though visually appealing, is not ready for prime time. Lots of applications will not run under 64bit Vista. I also have it on my laptop and wireless for a corporate environment is also buggy. PEAP/EAP-TLS doesn't exist as an option when you create a new wireless network. You'll have to create a dummy open one and THEN you can modify it to be PEAP/EAP-TLS. I highly recommend that you wait for at least SP1 for any production applications you have. If you have a PC to spare then sure play with it and install it. It will save you a learning curve. I use it to "test" as I have to support it but I don't trust it for production just yet.

It Rocks

Philips DVD Player DVP5140
Philips DVD Player DVP5140

Pros: I love this thing and for the $$$ you can't beat it. I used standard DVDs, DivX, AVI, MPEG and it all seems to work.

Cons: It couldn't play Motion JPEG from my digital camera but I suppose that's expected. Also had one older AVI file that it couldn't play reliably (would play and then freeze the video while audio was ok). Another slight disadvantage is if you burn a bunch of AVI's on a data disk (DVD or CD) then part of the name gets cuts off if too long so you can't really tell which file is which if you have multiple episodes numbered sequentially with long names.

Overall Review: It didn't have S-Video-out which was a bit of a disappointment for my slightly outdated setup. I didn't notice that when I read the specs but that's my fault. It does have Component Video though which I can't use until I upgrade my home setup. I couldn't see giving this product a 4 (more like a 4.75) as I am able to put LOTS of avi files on a data DVD and just play them for countless hours of high quality video.
