4GB Memory? ... Yes!

GIGABYTE GA-EG31M-S2 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-EG31M-S2 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Despite the fact that every website I have visited (NewEgg included) shows in their specifications that 2GB is the max for this board, I am happy to announce that I am running this board with 4GB of Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX. Gigabyte is the only website that shows the correct specification of 4GB max. This board rocks for the money! This board is functionally equivalent to the GA-EG31M-S2L with added energy savings features. Also, the placement of I/O ports is better.

Cons: Wished specs would show correct memory capacity.

Overall Review: I play BF2142 regularly and this board has no problem playing it well so long as the Dynamic Energy Saver feature is off. When turned on, this board will throttle back on power and effect performance. This is OK for apps that aren't graphics intensive.

A Whopping 60A +12V Rail!

CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750 W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Compatible with New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready
CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750 W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Compatible with New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: This power supply has the ampacity to handle just about anything you throw at it. Easily provides adequate current for any single high end video card out there and most dual SLI/Crossfire configurations.

Cons: Well, there are a lot of cables and connectors I won't be using.

Overall Review: I was having system lockups whenever I would play Battlefield 2142 or Company of Heroes. I discovered that my old PSU was only capable of supplying 75% of the maximum rated current requirement of my video card. So I found this jewel and I don't have any more lockups or crashes.

Not Enough Current Available

Rosewill RD450S, 80 PLUS Certified 450 W Power Supply
Rosewill RD450S, 80 PLUS Certified 450 W Power Supply

Pros: Well built supply with wrapped cables.

Cons: I was having issues with my system freezing when I ran Battlefield 2142 and Company of Heroes. I upgraded my old power supply(250W) with this hoping it would resolve the issue. It didn't. I have an EVGA 8600GT 256MB (256-P2-N751-TR) graphics card and it calls for a +12v supply with 18A capacity. This PSU only provides 14A on the +12V1 rail. And although the other +12V2 provides 16A, the two do not combine to give me the required 18A for the card. I was limited by the +12V1 rail. I returned this PSU for a refund and bought a Corsair CMPSU-750TX instead (a whopping 60A +12V single rail!). Haven't had any more lockups!

Overall Review: If you are having issues with system lockups or wierd video effects don't always blame your system or video card. Make sure your PSU is up to the task. Always check to make sure the PSU will provide the maximum current load for your system and video card. Beware of PSUs that have high wattage ratings but have multiple rails with inadequate current capacities. Always make sure the rail that powers your video has a current rating that is 25% or more higher than the ampacity requirement of the card.

Highly Recommended for BF 2142

Creative 70SB073A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

Pros: Highly recommend this card for BF 2142 players. This card really brings out the sound definition and positional performance inherrent in X-Fi. Since this card implements X-Fi in hardware, the fps performance really rocks since the cpu is not busy rendering sound.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: If you have a set of 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound speakers connected to this board and you use headphones plugged into the jack on the speaker, make sure to select headphones in the Speakers tab of the Creative Audio Console. The headphone jack, on the Logitech X-530 speaker system I use, feeds through the front left and right channels only. So, in order to render surround sound effects in a pair of headphones, you need to do this or some sounds will not be heard and positional ques will be lost. Also, enable CMSS-3DSurround in the CMSS-3D tab.
