If You Don't Have Time To Roll Your Own, Roll With This One

MSI Gaming Desktop Infinite A 8RG-242US Intel Core i7-8700 16GB DDR4 2TB HDD 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
MSI Gaming Desktop Infinite A 8RG-242US Intel Core i7-8700 16GB DDR4 2TB HDD 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

Pros: Internally well organized. Solid, if unusual shape for the case. Fast and quite quiet. After tuning, OS is snappy (I'm a Win7 devotee).

Cons: Needs more USB ports on the backplane. Should include 2 additional 2.5" SSD mount brackets for expansion or they should be readily available through MSI. Would like more PCIe slots, but whaddya want for $1500 on sale?? Installing the tempered glass panel would interfere with the internal cooling design as there is a nice vent right over the 1070's twin fans. That might take a rework of the system internally - removing the "vertical mount" feature and negating the compartmentalized cooling flow that helps keep the beastie so quiet.

Overall Review: This little champ allows me to run X-Plane with high rendering settings. New York area is flyable with high quality payware aircraft and high object density. Overall nice experience registering on the MSI site, and phone contact with the US support staff was quite easy to navigate. While neither a pro nor a con, the innards are a bit of a maze, and will make any upgrades a bit of a challenge. But these same innards contribute to efficient cooling, and that's very important when cooling with air alone. But if I'm not mistaken, there's room on the top of the case for a one or two fan liquid cooling unit. Overall, I'd do it again. This is the first desktop PC I've bought myself since 1995, having built every other new purchase from the mobo up. It replaces an 8 year old Gateway gamer, and the difference is astounding (go figure...). While I'm using this system for software development purposes (3D modeling, graphics and plugin develoment), I think it would be a great entry level game system for most users unless your ego demands three digit frame rate numbers. If you find it on sale, go for it.

Just Coasting With A Bad Subwoofer - No Resolution In Sight

Polk Audio TL1600 5.1 Compact Surround Sound Home Theater System with Powered Subwoofer
Polk Audio TL1600 5.1 Compact Surround Sound Home Theater System with Powered Subwoofer

Pros: Decent system for the money. Satellites sound great.

Cons: Subwoofer hums - even when disconnected from amp. Polk support admitted it was a bad amp and quickly replaced with a subwoofer amp board that was over 10 years old and not even the same model number, although it was clearly the same thing. Okay - I put that in as it was an easy swap as it was much easier than returning the whole, rather heavy system. But the replacement hums and I've gotten zero satisfaction from Polk after repeated calls and attempts to get a human response from their ticket system. Apparently I'm old news, and not worth their bother.

Overall Review: If I'd paid full price, I would have returned everything for a refund. But the satellites sound great with my 20 year old Cambridge Soundworks sub, so I have something to tide me over. But that nice big hunky sub that came with the Polk system is a big annoyance, sitting in the corner and humming all the time when I try to use it. So it's pretty much useless unless and until Polk sends me a NEW and RECENT subamplifier board. But at three months, I may as well be waiting for the Titanic to arrive in New York harbor. One last thing: You will want to claw your ears off after about five minutes on hold with Polk tech support. They have The. Most. Annoying. Ukulele music. Ever. No offense to those that like the instrument and/or the sound. I don't mind waiting my turn, but please - there's no reason to torture me. "Call back" technology has been available for literally years and it works well. If you think you may ever need to call Polk, steer away from their products. Unless you like audio abuse.
