EVGA 700 B1 100-B1-0700-K1 80+ BRONZE 700W Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply
EVGA 700 B1 100-B1-0700-K1 80+ BRONZE 700W Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply

Pros: May look and feel like a brick, but that's a good thing. Solidly built and works as expected. Bought this to replace my girlfriend's PSU that gave up the ghost after 7 years and 10 months. Quick delivery and the included self-tester was a blessing as it confirmed 100% that her old PSU was the culprit. We mounted this in and it's not had a single fault so far. All voltages are very steady on top of that. Plus it matches my girlfriend's Gothic-style case even better than her previous one!

Cons: None so far!

So far, so good, I think?

GIGABYTE Radeon RX 570 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support ATX Graphics Card GV-RX570GAMING-4GD
GIGABYTE Radeon RX 570 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support ATX Graphics Card GV-RX570GAMING-4GD

Pros: Nice looking card. Seems to perform well in games for the most part. Uses little wattage compared to previous cards. Runs quiet and cool, which also was a nice improvement over a previous card. I like how the fan will shut off to ease power consumption yet the card stays plenty cool. Works with both Legacy and EUFI types of bios. It's plug and play. Use it primarily for 1080p gaming. Most games it can easily handle on max settings. However, there's one or two out there which do strain it and make it struggle to keep 30+ in max settings.

Cons: Not sure if this is a known issue or something potentially wrong with the card. But whenever the power state changes, such as the computer going to sleep or the screen timeout turning on, when you get the desktop back a lot of times it will be tinted in a pink or violet color. Not sure what that's about unless it's not fully recovering from the power state change. However, if you force a screen timeout and then come out of the timeout right away then normal color palette is restored. So far I am unable to figure out how to change the RGB LED colors using the software from the Gigabyte website. The software for that part of the card doesn't seem to be well thought-out and is confusing at times on what you are trying to change. Have tried changing both the color and the ambiance (pulse, breathing, etc.) without any apparent change on the card taking place. Matter of fact, it was cycling through the color ranges by default but when I tried to change color via the software it simply stopped on a solid color I didn't choose and didn't respond or cycle any further.

Overall Review: It has RGB lighting on the card edge (top of the car if you are looking at the fan side) which is a neat thing to see on a video card and is especially nifty if you have a windowed side panel on your computer as that simply adds to the cool factor of your rig. But see CONS above for potential headaches getting the colors to do what you want. I would recommend this card despite the CONS as it still seems to work fine otherwise. It made a nice difference in some of the games I play and scores around 1900 on Valley benchmark and around 8800 on Fire Strike benchmark. Bought two of these, one for myself and one for my girlfriend. They replaced a 5870 and 7870 respectively. One was placed into an ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 mobo with Phenom II 955 BE cpu, 16gb ddr3 memory. The other went into an MSI 990FXA Gaming AM3+ mobo with an FX 8350 cpu and 16gb ddr3 memory. As far as overall performance and benchmarking the AM3+ 8350 scores a little higher overall than the older AM3 machine. But both are light-years better than what they were previously in terms of the gaming performance. Now if only we can just get upgraded to an AM4-based system. ;-) Both previous cards were XFX branded. Had typically liked their cards. However, we got saddled into one of their Double-D 7870 cards and even with frame-rate control and chill turned on the card would constantly stay between 88-92C on temps, prior to turning that stuff on the card would read anywhere from 98-105. It would heat up our entire apartment. Great during the winter, but drove our electric bill up during the summer with the air conditioner trying to offset it. By comparison both of these RX 570 cards stay between 59-67C for a much cooler gaming experience. And even in some older games where it's not working so hard, the temps will even dip to mid-50s and wattage usage reporting at just 40 watts at times. And it's not uncommon to see the "Fan Off" led on it light up when you're playing a less-demanding game too because the card isn't having to work very hard and so can save power by literally idling the fan from time to time. So yeah, I'm impressed with that aspect compared to the power-hungry older cards we had been using. I would give a 5 egg review but 4 for now until I find out what the pink/violet screen issue is about when it woks up from sleep or timeout.

Speedy and stable.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL

Pros: Went with G.Skill for this memory after having bought some memory a few years earlier for our original builds. They did not let us down and these are top quality pieces. Bought two kits of 2x8 (16gb) memory, one is currently used an an AM3+ MSI 990FXA Gaming motherboard where it provides speedy and stable support. The other kit went into the AM3 ASUS M4A79XTD EVO running an old Phenom II processor and despite the fact the memory wasn't on the QVL memory listing, it works stable and at 1600mhz with all other options set to Auto. Very happy and very impressed with this memory.

Cons: None at all, period.

Overall Review: Did I mention they were beautifully aggressive in design? They look positively Gothic sitting in my girlfriend's all-black case with MSI 990FXA black/red Dragon-themed motherboard. +5 more eggs for matching her motherboard and making it look divinely macabre!

Beautiful, Expansive, Dragon stuffs.

MSI MSI Gaming 990FXA-GAMING AM3+/ AM3 AMD 990FX & SB950 USB 3.1 ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI MSI Gaming 990FXA-GAMING AM3+/ AM3 AMD 990FX & SB950 USB 3.1 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Very good looking and great performing motherboard. Has a lot of great features from supporting a wide variety of add-in hardware to it's network game boost feature to it's command center giving you the power to try and tame this dragon of a beast. It will even triple crossfire though that option we never managed to use yet, lol. MSI did a superb job on this motherboard.

Cons: They are not made anymore. Shame, because I would buy a second one in 2018. I hope they have an AM4 equivalent?

Overall Review: Bought this for my girlfriend to upgrade her computer paired with an FX 8350 and 16gb of 1600mhz memory. She loved it. I wish I had bought a second one because they apparently stopped making them not long after. Bummer, cause I wanted to get myself one a few months later but was shut out. Guess for my personal computer I'll end up having to go from Phenom II to AM4 bypassing an FX system completely. Shame. Also, initially it didn't support WIndows 10 even after we went ahead and upgraded. But thankfully it worked enough to not cause any major problems while MSI was working on providing drivers for it. It's now WIndows 10 compatible and will likely be around our house for a long time even if and when move up to AM4 machines. This would still be a very capable backup machine.

Good, reliable.

CORSAIR Voyager 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive CMFUSB2.0-16GB
CORSAIR Voyager 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive CMFUSB2.0-16GB

Pros: 7.5 years later and this thing still works. Granted, it's not seen regular, heavy duty usage. But I have used it often for temporarily backing up files, even used it a few times as a boot drive to install Linux on an outdated laptop. Then reformat and use for other stuff. Have also used it for storing pictures on and then plugging into my printer to be printed out later. Works like a charm for that and printer instantly recognizes the thumb drive. Water proof design and thick, rubbery, outer shell makes this a nearly indestructible thumb drive. It's been sat on, stepped on, dropped, etc. It still works!!

Cons: None, but see other.

Overall Review: Have to be careful if you put this on an external port on the front of your computer or other area that might stick out into human traffic. The rubbery housing very easily grips nearby clothing and I nearly yanked it out of the computer one day walking past and my pants snagged on it. Best to put in a slot around the back of the computer where it's a bit more safe from being snagged on a passerby's clothing.

Updated 5/20/2018 - So far, so great

XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD-587X-ZNFC
XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD-587X-ZNFC

Pros: Fast! An obvious improvement from the 5770 I had been using in terms of raw gaming power. Seems to have a deeper color depth, perhaps the difference in going from 128bit card to 256bit? Better shader engine perhaps? I'm not that technical to know. Runs fairly cool under heavy gaming with the fan increasing automatically. EDIT: More than 7 years later one of the two original cards purchases are still running and still an every day performer. One of these died about a year after I made this review and XFX were nice enough to replace it under warranty. There other original 5870 purchases is in this computer I'm typing on right now, my gaming computer.

Cons: As others have mentioned, under heavy duty gaming the fan can become noticeably loud. EDIT: 7 years later this is about due for an upgrade, so inevitably this card will be retired likely by the end of the year. 1gb of ram is just not enough to keep up with the latest games anymore. However, this card will work in Star Citizen, albeit only 8-15 fps depending on settings and whether you have an SSD drive. Another game that has given it trouble is Fishing: Barents Sea, apparently due to the API the game uses which makes these older AMD cards (5000,6000 series) cards problematic to run the game with, with missing ocean or other eye candy. Otherwise, this old 5870 still plays games like Space Engineers, Fishing Planet, MotoGP '17, etc at a decent enough framerate to make it enjoyable.

Overall Review: Some performance marks from mine in a AMD 955 3.2ghz stock system with 8gb memory... City of Heroes on Ultra looks beautiful and runs steady 58-62fps range. Lord of the Rings Online runs 80-110+ max DX11 Ultra settings. 3dMark Vantage, P-score 14,868 GPU-score 17,037. 3dMark 11 P-score of 4,039, GPU score 4,076. All on stock card settings (not overclocked) with 11.3 ocl drivers. Bought me and my girlfriend one when they were on sale for our gaming rigs. We're both very happy and can't wait to get two more to try crossfire in the near future.
