Quality Drive

SAMSUNG USB 2.0 External 8X Slim LightScribe DVD Burner Model SE-T084L LightScribe Support
SAMSUNG USB 2.0 External 8X Slim LightScribe DVD Burner Model SE-T084L LightScribe Support

Pros: Small, slim form factor. Slot loading. Wide variety of supported formats. Requires no drivers for use with XP, OS X, or Vista. Works well and has been reliable. Reasonably fast; full CD burn in about 8 minutes. Good use of design. Feels like a well thought out package, and includes a nice, padded slipcase, as well as a tool to manually eject the disk. (Not that I'll ever use the tool, but it's a nice touch and shows that they care.)

Cons: Package says that it supports USB-Hub power without the AC adapter. This may be the case, but I have yet to find a computer that this works with. A shame, but I wasn't really expecting to use it without the AC adapter, anyway. Included USB cord is only 2 feet long, which is perfectly fine for use with a laptop; not so great if you have to plug into the back of a large desktop. Slot-load is a louder than most. Drive peeks out of the included slipcase. Also, English-language support for this drive is a bit sub-par.

Overall Review: Ignore the guy below who wasn't able to use his drive because he couldn't get his tray to eject. Of course he couldn't. This is a slot-loading drive; there's no tray to eject! You have to feel sorry for him a bit, though, if he managed to throw away a perfectly good, well-designed drive such as this just because he didn't realize it was tray-less.

Decent Card Plagued with Reliability / Compatability Problems

EDIMAX EW-7128G Wireless Card IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates
EDIMAX EW-7128G Wireless Card IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: External antenna does help signal strength a bit. Low cost. Installed without problems on 64 bit Windows Vista. Speed is to be expected.

Cons: Unreliable connection. Will randomly lose IP/DNS settings causing the computer to lose connectivity to the internet (though intranet works fine). This problem is simple to fix and seems to only happen when playing games, so I suppose it depends on where your priorities lie. Also, this issue may be particular to Vista. There are some other compatibility issues with Vista (namely, device stops working after restoring from a sleep state).

Overall Review: While this card does have a few nice features such as including a dipole antenna for such a low-cost card, the reliability issues I've been having completely outweigh these small advantages. Most people will not need the dipole antenna, and I would recommend that you look for a card that provides a more reliable connection and, if you are using Vista, better compatability.

Powerful Quality System, a Few Idiosyncrasies

Shuttle XPC SN27P2 AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra Barebone
Shuttle XPC SN27P2 AMD Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra Barebone

Pros: Quality build system. Great documentation. Great thermal design actually makes for a fairly cool case even with so many components put into the smaller space. Also, as always with Shuttle systems, wiring management is great and actually makes the case feel very roomy. Also, a fairly high wattage (and quiet) power supply for its size. Fits and powers a full-sized graphics card without problems.

Cons: Motherboard has two separate single, non-standard USB headers, and the case comes one short converter cable that changes the smaller 5-pin USB header into the more standard 4-pin header. This means you can really only install one internal, single-header USB device without going through a bunch of trouble. Also, there's no built in wireless networking, and only a single free PCI slot, so if you plan on having wireless networking, you won't be able to install a modem or sound card or anything else.

Overall Review: The included CD did not have Vista drivers so I had to hunt around a bit to get the drivers for this system. However, once I found them, my machine has been running solid. Considering the abundance of compatibility issues with 64-bit Vista machines, this has been a pleasant surprise. Also, I bought the refurbished version from Newegg, and I haven't encountered any problems.

Fast, Reliable, Quality, and Giant-Plastic-Spidery

i-rocks ir-4600-BK USB 2.0 Smart Hub Black
i-rocks ir-4600-BK USB 2.0 Smart Hub Black

Pros: Nice, simple design. No stupid lights. The USB port on top is really nice to quickly plug in a USB key or something similar. Provides good, reliable power to all the ports and also has quality construction. Rubber bottom keeps this unit from sliding around too much.

Cons: Really stupid design. By that I mean that the ports on this thing are fanned out in around the oval circumference of the hub. That means that once you have everything plugged into it, it takes up desk space like a giant plastic spider.

Overall Review: Really great if you don't have a ton of stuff to plug in at once.

Less Airflow, More Cost, Golden Silence

SilenX IXP-34-08 60mm Case Fan
SilenX IXP-34-08 60mm Case Fan

Pros: Very quiet and decent airflow. Great for media center PCs.

Cons: Expensive. SilenX makes you pay quite a premium for their products.

Overall Review: I have two of these in the back of my media center case, and they are pretty much silent. The case and components inside are all designed for thermal efficiency, so these two fans perform just fine. Nothing inside the case even gets warm, but your experience may differ depending on your case and components. Choose them carefully. With a fanless motherboard and graphics card, and large 120mm fans in my PSU and on my CPU (from Zalman), the loudest part of my computer is the hard drive.

Great Key for Light Use

PQI Intelligent Drive i810 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) BF07-2032R0131
PQI Intelligent Drive i810 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) BF07-2032R0131

Pros: Small size and great asthetic. Looks good! Also transfer speed is good and memory is reliable (no tendency to corrupt data).

Cons: No indicator light, though this is a minor gripe. The definite worst thing about this, however, is that the little plastic bit on the bottom of this drive that locks the sliding portion in either the extended or retracted position is very small. And made of plastic. And thus it has a tendency to break even if after a month or two of regular use. This means the USB key slides around freely making it impossible to insert it into a USB port in certain situations. (Say for example, when the port requires the bottom of your USB key to face a desk or some other surface and you can't also fit your finger underneath to keep the USB key extended while you insert it into the USB port.)

Overall Review: After the retracting thing broke in the second month, I decided to rip the sliding portion out so I could actually use it. If not for this, I would have given this USB key 5 stars, hands down.
