Performance worth the Price

GIGABYTE Ultra Durable VGA Series Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card GV-R685OC-1GD
GIGABYTE Ultra Durable VGA Series Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card GV-R685OC-1GD

Pros: Quiet, Cool, efficient, great for HDMI interface, works with my LG 42" TV without any hassel. For a quick comparison, I went from a GTS 250 1GB which got on average 50 to 55 frames per second on Furmark 1.8, while hitting 70 Deg C on the standard benchmark. The 6850 OC on the same exact test got 76 FPS while only hitting 50 Deg C. My overall wattage pull on my PC has decreased as well, but I'm not playing anything like Crysis, either. In addition, my GTS 250 had issues displaying to both my monitor and TV, where I would always have to readjust the desktop size on the TV to less than 1080p. It would also struggle when displaying to both. The 6850 automatically recognizes the TV and displays appropriately and the temp only goes up a couple Deg C.

Cons: Catalyst take some getting used to. I've been a Nvidia user up until now. Am currently haveing problems running 3DMark Vantage, but not with my games or other software. So, probably just a driver issue.

Overall Review: I had a lot of problems stripping the old Nvidia drivers from my system. Catalyst is weird enough without having conflicts from old Nvidia drivers. Considering my previous GPU was an 8800GTX from early 2007, and cost almost $600, and how unstable that was (not to mention how many RMA's), and then how the GTS 250 was going for around $130 in early 2010 for about the same performance (although completely stable), Spending $190 on this card for such a dramatic improvement with stability to me is a bargain.

XFX and 6950 both worth it

XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD-695A-CNFC
XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card HD-695A-CNFC

Pros: Quiet, relatively cool (38C idle), can run games (Empire:Total War) at Max settings out of the box, completely compatible with LG Flatscreen TV, improved HD settings for calibrating with TV, and AMD HD Audio seems to work well, and a WEI of 7.9 (not that its a good benchmark). Other stats: Furmark 1.8, standard settings, 9500 score, 160 avg fps, 63 C 3DMark Vantage, performance default, GPU score 17,007 With current prices, that's 1.6 cents per vantage point. And remember, Cayman GPU's are totally new architecture, so drivers have a while to go before they fully optimize its potential, or DX11 games make use of the new features.

Cons: Very Large. I read about the size before, but thought my full size tower wouldn't have a problem since it handled a 8800GTX easily. However, I had to re-run all my sata cables because the HDD mounting bracket was causing a problem. In the end, there was just enough space to fit it, but I had to torque the bracket back to get the reinforcing flange out of the way. Adjusting the angle to get the card in under the flange and not hit other components was a problem, too. I would recommend on new builds to install the card on the MB BEFORE putting the MB in the case. The other problem is that due to the space constraints that this will cause future problems with airflow. If I ever want to crossfire, I will need to either improve my cooling blowing onto the card, or buy a new case.

Overall Review: I bought this at the end of January, then saw prices start going up. Now they're back down, and with the rebate, I could have saved another $20. Oh well. But the current price makes this about the same as a 6950 1GB. In addition, you have the XFX warranty. I scanned other product reviews from XFX, and noticed that XFX customer service replied to most of the complaints on Newegg. I did the same for SAPPHIRE, and noticed they did not. Sapphire may be a little cheaper and come with adapters, but I plan on keeping this card more than 2 years. I had problems with the 8800GTX from EVGA just after the 2 year mark, and their warranty was a blessing. So, if you plan to keep this for a while, OC or MOD it, XFX is worth the extra $10. Compared to my GTS250 1GB ($135 14 months ago) on the same system Furmark 1.8, standard settings, 3400 score, 55 avg fps, 71 C 3DMark Vantage, performance default, GPU score 6500 for a price/perform ratio of 2.1 cents ver vantage point.

Better than feared

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD

Pros: Less buggy than XP. No blue screens. Smooth and quick uploads. Extra features are more useful than typical MS bells and wistles. Viewing is just amazing, especially with a good GPU.

Cons: Ton of updates already downloaded. MS has a LOT of updated drivers now, waiting for download, and most hardware vendors also have drivers now, too. Most of my comp didn't work right until I connected it to the net, and then Vista managed to download everything on it's own, and now my system is 100% smooth.

Overall Review: Does have issues with older 32 bit programs, but I assumed that would happen anyways. Needed a 64 bit system for CAD work. So far, all new games work, too.

It does work with Vista

Pros: This device DOES work with Vista. I have Home Premium and have been successfully ripping and burning with this Drive. The SATA is fine.

Cons: None for the hardware. Only complaint is that the NERO software is not vista compatible. You need to upgrade to NERO 7.0. However, the Vista software works.

Overall Review: I don't know what problem people are having with this drive and Vista but they're either not installing it correctly, their overall system is not truely Vista compatible, or they don't have their system hooked up so as to download the TON of Vista updates and drivers that are now available. The only other consideration I can offer is that my system was a new system with a clean install, not an OS upgrade.

Delicious

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Graphics Card 768-P2-N831-AR
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Graphics Card 768-P2-N831-AR

Pros: Incredible graphics. Incredible power. HDCP is great. Dual monitor support is a nice feature. It's quieter than I anticipated. The monitor cables that come with give you a variety of options. Easy install.

Cons: The install disk does not have drivers for Vista. Vista itself also doesn't initially recognize the card, either. However, if connected, Vista will automatically download drivers for it, and then everything works great. EVGA also has downloadable beta drivers but I've been told they are quirky.

Overall Review: The EVGA MB's automatically come with SLI installation information, including the 8800GTX. I made sure to get both MB and GPU from EVGA to ensure complete compatibility.

Great Design

EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This mb is brilliantly laid out. I don't have an connectivity issues or cables getting in the way. The I/O panel doesn't have any impeding connections. The installation guide was very competently laid out and easy to use with clear pictures. Performance has been outstanding with my other components, including the EVGA 8800GTX.

Cons: It's obvious that they went to a lot of trouble to cram in as much as they could into a standard ATX size board, but if I install a second 8800GTX, I'll only have one PCI slot I can use. Seems like it's time for something larger than an ATX to become the new standard.

Overall Review: The installation disk is no good for Vista. However, Vista already has all the drivers needed as long as you have an internet connection and it works like a champ when finished.
