Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 2nd Unit

Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID Box 4 Bay Raid 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA
Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 PRORAID Box 4 Bay Raid 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: USB 3.0 Easy to install. Had no problem installing 2nd unit. See other thoughts for install laugh.

Cons: None so far with the 1st or 2nd units themselves. Issue which may by my PC hardware OR Win 7. About once a month, Windows says unit is unavailable but no error appears on HFR2-SU3S2 itself. Restart of Windows and everything is back to normal. NOT taking a star away since I not convinced it is the RAID box's problem. When the drives do go into sleep mode, it just takes a few seconds for them to all spin up. This was disconcerting at first. Have chosen NOT to pursue always on mode with the drives, if it is even available.

Overall Review: This is my 2nd HFR2-SU3S2 for additional storage. Both running in RAID 5 mode. Very satisfied with 1st one, so bought another. All drives are Seagate ST3000DM001. All have been reliable so far. I had installation issues with the 1st one and it turned out ALL of the trouble was caused by me. While setting up the 1st one, without thinking about it, I picked up a USB 3.0 cable from my stash. During the formatting phase, Windows reported that the format failed. After the 3rd try, I saw that the PROVIDED USB 3.0 cable was still in the box and was much heavier. Duh! Swapped out the cables and formatted with no problem. Double Duh! Note: using USB controller card Mediasonic HP1-SU3 PCI Express USB 3.0 I set up the first HFR2-SU3S2 in Dec 2012, so have close to 6 months of usage on it and about 6 TB of data on it. New Unit is 5 days old and Teracopy reported back a avg of 52 MB/s on last move of 159 GB mixed data formats and sizes with 2.5 TB on 2nd unit now. On large files, I have seen avg of 101 MB/s. Yes I save anything and everything on the computers.

Well Prep'ed and cleaned system

Dell Optiplex 7010 Tower, Intel Quad Core i5 3470 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW, Windows 10
Dell Optiplex 7010 Tower, Intel Quad Core i5 3470 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW, Windows 10

Pros: System arrived packed well. Opening up system the interior was well cleaned including the case and cpu cooler fans. All hardware components exactly as advertised. It had the Microsoft refurbished PC Windows 10 license attached to the case. Upon booting the system, the windows started the new user setup process which is normal and appropriate. The system was free of annoying bloatware but did have a few items on the desktop that may or may not be of use for the new owner. Example, Libre office package was there which could be an excellent choice for some users. A Lot Less of bloatware than I have dealt with NEW PCs in the past. (Thank You!!) Also I appreciate that the Dell Service tag data was still preserved on the system (in addition to the physical service tag label). This made it a snap to locate the few updated hardware drives that were available at Dell 's support website. This also tells me the company knows what it is doing and preserves important hardware data through the refurbishing process. I would definitely buy from this company again.

Cons: Nothing that I would consider a deal breaker. About the only "used" damage I found was on the back where there was a slight bend on the back of the case near the expansion slots. All it took was a good hard press of fingers from the inside to pop the bend out. Very slight and about on par with what I have seen on brand new units. I am still a happy camper with the unit.

Overall Review: I would definitely buy from this company again.

System is a winner

Dell Optiplex 960 Desktop PC - Core 2 Quad - 2.66ghz - 4GB - 160GB - DVD - 7 Professional
Dell Optiplex 960 Desktop PC - Core 2 Quad - 2.66ghz - 4GB - 160GB - DVD - 7 Professional

Pros: Outside of unit so clean I had to use a flashlight to find any wear marks. Inside of unit thoroughly cleaned. Very happy with the prep and shipping packaging. While each system will vary, from what I have seen, the people prep'ing the system are thorough . Another positive is that the system was reimaged with Win 7 Pro 64 Bit. The original operating system was Vista. Another plus for me is having Quad vs Duo Core 2. I rather give up a little bit in raw processor speed in exchange for the addition cores in the Quad.

Cons: Comes with a DVD-ROM verses DVD burner which can be cheaply and easily changed out. May not matter for your use. Hard Drive is small by today's standards BUT more than adequate for the expected use of the system.

Overall Review: Would I buy this system again? Yes. Would I buy another refurbished system from this company again? Yes Planning considerations IF you have large storage needs then either use network storage (business or advanced home user) or an external hard drive. IF you need to install an add in card then need to limit selections to Low profile expansion cards. Use the system's dell service tag number to locate manuals etc. via Dell web site. When activating Windows, remember to the use the product key from the NEW Win 7 product sticker on the case. NOT the original vista sticker product key. USB 2 verses USB 3 which is no surprise.

Well cleaned and Well Prepared refurbished system

All hardware components exactly as advertised. It had the Microsoft refurbished PC Windows 10 license attached to the case. The Dell service tag information preserved both on physical tag and on the system hard drive making it easy to check the system for updates at the dell support site. My impression is that they know what they are doing during the refurbishing process. System arrived 7 days after the order which I consider timely and prompt. Well packed and Very Clean. Yes I would buy from them again.

Responded promptly to a DOA situation. Good Turnaround. Happy with Linksys Direct staff.

Wanted another E8350 to use in bridge mode for the 2nd floor. Purchasing a refurbished unit was a cost effective way to implement an enhancement to the wireless speed to the far corner bedroom. Unfortunately the first unit was DOA. I did get a prompt response from the Linksys Direct staff and a replacement unit was sent. A UPS shipping label was provided for the DOA. When the 2nd one arrived, immediately hooked it up, confirmed it was working properly and then configured it for bridge mode successfully. Great speed now including video and movie playback and full access to all systems attached to the LAN. I do suggest you use the Linksys tutorials and online reference materials which start off generic BUT had links to deeper and more specific detailed instructions. There is no substitute for reading, learning and questioning yourself about what is it you are trying to do.... The fact that a DOA got out their door is why 4 eggs and not 5 eggs.
